18 mths to decide to paint .. 3 days to choose color. Help!(Pics)

We finished our kitchen last year and I had them paint the walls the same color as the cabinets. I've decided it's time to paint the kitchen and I have a painter coming later this week. Only one problem, what color paint?

The dining room and kitchen are open to each other and there is a header between the rooms and down the walls so I think I can change colors.

Here's a before of the dining room. I knew I wanted to change this color so I did not choose a color for the kitchen.

What color would you paint this kitchen? The island is soapstone and the counter and backsplash in the kitchen is stainless.

Seeing beekeeperswife's dark gray in her kitchen makes me want to paint mine dark gray. What do you think?

I totally love your brown dining room. It brings out those white arm chairs and the zebra rug so much better. Mind sharing the paint color?

For the kitchen, here are my recs:
- if you want to keep it neutral, add a khaki color like Sherwood Tan in BM / Latte in SW, and add pops of color with wall hangings or other accents
- a green like BM Baby Turtle or Cheyenne Green would go beautifully well as well
- you could also do a grey/blue like BM Wedgewood Grey

I personally would not do a dark gray like beekeeperswife's kitchen next to a dark brown room. I think you need more connection between the two rooms' paint colors just coz its such an open floor plan between these two rooms.

I also love dark gray, but feel as Sonaliagrawal does...That it might be quite a jolt to change from the strong brown to a even stronger gray...kind of competing colors, and without a link to join and flow the 2 rooms together. You might get away with a gray...Just the right shade (dove or other with a creamy or brownish base to it?) and probably substantially lighter than beekeeperswife's. The brown you used makes a wonderfully amazing change in the dining room...A great choice!

Congratulations! Your cabinets look beautiful!! I would not go with the two different granites. Not because of the size of the space, which by the way is not small. Most of the kitchens that I've seen with two different countertops, also had a different cabinet color on the perimeter than the island. Since your island will match your perimeter, I think you should keep the countertops uniform as well. Of course that is just IMHO. As far as color, I think you should go with a dark granite to give some contrast. Since your cabinets and floor are so close in color, a lighter granite would look too monochromatic. A dark, rich color on the counter would really make the cabinets pop. I would even avoid the browns and go with a black or dark green or dark blue granite for some interest. I think Volga Blue or Verde Peacock would look great. Soapstone would be gorgeous! Good Luck! Susan

Two thoughts for you - take 'em or leave 'em. Of what you drew, I'd stay with the original drawing. I don't know what your cabinet options are, but I would do uppers over bases for the entire length and cut the two deeper end cabinets. I would make all of the uppers about 14" deep and perhaps make a wider, centered upper with or without glass doors that was pulled forward a couple of inches or was made 2 " deeper (16"). The same "emphasis" on the centered cabinet would work if the centered one was made normal depth and set-back instead or was shorter or went to the counter. Part of the reason for this is that small pantry cabinets are pretty freakin' expensive plus yours are framed and appear to be about 15" wide each. You'll lose 3" of width for the frame and about another 2-3" for the pullout sidewalls and their clearance and/or glides. So the amount of actual storage width per pullout will be pretty small - 9 to 10". The same framed cabinet math is true on a 12" wide upper - you are actually pretty limited by the cabinet door opening width of 9" as to what you can fit inside. You can put a ton of stuff in a 14-15" deep cabinet. If you broke the space into thirds, all of the cabinets would be wider - helping to negate storage losses due to frames and drawer sides.

You are correct. The number 5 in each hue family marks the point where the highest concentration of the respective hue parent is perceived. That's why all the 5s are marked with a big dot. Every color - all the colors we like to call neutral, white, grays, blacks - is defined by how much of the hue parent can be perceived. So, as you move counter clockwise from 5 Y towards the yellow-red hue family, the amount of perceivable yellowness lessens and yellow-red (orangeness) increases. You can see the gradation of hue unit lines on the color wheel. So the hue family notation tells you the proportion of hue parent that is discernible in a color AND also the proportion of overtone or hue bias from the neighboring hue family. Important to note - the notations are based on a D65 Illuminant which mimics a relatively balanced quality of light. The quality of light in your space may vary.

You can do herringbone as an accent btw. Like under the hood. Herbflavors reason is probably along the lines of : Your kitchen is not plain. You’ll have two tone cabinets. Wood flooring. Windows ... it’s a lot of visual hopping around. I do think herringbone is a risk but will probably still look great!! I’m Totaly obs with herringbone also. I’m thinking what I’d do if this was my kitchen. Do you like finger tiles? It’s basically the small tile you picked it. It’s very pretty also! Love that...

sundownr, your kitchen and dining room are beautiful! I think your kitchen is screaming out for a rich color. My dining room is a very very dark chocolate (on the top half). I wanted that rich kind of color to come through the kitchen family room area. When I was deciding on my cabinets, I nixed the idea of dark cabinets because I felt that the darkness would just be flowing through the rooms. Not sure if that is clear. So I went with the white cabinets, as you have done too.

I knew that I didn't want to use the same paint as the dining room, but I had originally thought to use that same color as my accent color on my fireplace wall, and at the far end of my family room, opposite side of my range (about 40+ feet away). But then I changed my mind. I ended up finding a taupe. The taupe coordinated with the brown in my dining room, and so did the gray (even though it really is a taupe). I would check out that color, in case it does work for you (Valspar Coastal Villa (lighter one) and Italian Leather (dark color behind range and on fireplace wall). My colors work together. I needed a gray with brown in it.

I also think you could paint the room the same color as your dining room. The two rooms flow together. I think it would look very yummy to have that rich color in there.

By the way, love your zebra rug. (where is it from?) I'm going to do that in my family room area, but I'm going with a gray zebra. Currently the rug choice is between 2, but nobody is voting on the Home Decor forum--I don't think they like me over there. :(

Here is my dining room which is right off of the kitchen. Crooked things on the wall...certainly a sign of a renovation going on!

I would also try to find "Funcolors", I think that's her name. She is really good on giving you names of paints to use. Not sure where she is, maybe Home Decorating Forum or painting forum. Good luck to you!

What color is your dining room? What color is one or two shades up the paint thingey from it? Just curious?

I know absolutely NOTHING about paint! I should be posting my own kitchen asking for paint help instead of responding here. HA! But, the way your cabinets are, there's going to be alot of paint on the left side of the room and alot of white (cabinets with no wall) on the right side. I think a really, really dark color might make it look a little lopsided. Does that make sense to anyone??? When I look at the dining room, I love the color of the chandy globes...maybe something similar to that color....hence my question at the start of my post. Not sure how that would look with your floors...maybe someone else will chime in on that part.

What about these colors? You could do an accent wall with this wall paper and use the darker or ligher shade on walls.

I like the idea of gray a lot -- it would work with that spring-lime green you have in the kitchen artwork, as well as the chocolate. Another option is to go with some lavender along with the green in your accents.

I put a very rich warm gray in my sunroom - it's Benjamin Moore Aura in the Affinity color Weimaraner. You might try a similar warm gray a few tones lighter? I like the lighter gray in jterrilynn's wallpaper idea. (Aura comes in a gorgeous new scrubbable matte formulation for kitchens and baths, too.)

I would be careful to choose something a bit lighter than the
DR. They should go together. Certainly not grey.

Then my house is all close shades of blue and white.

From the non-neutral side of da house - bluey-teal or tomatoe, light turquoise or pinkish. Can't help but notice how nice they look in your dishes in the dining room.

Thank you all for helping me! I forgot to mention I added a 3rd pantry door where the green/blue quilt is so there will be even less wall painted.

Sonaliagrawal, the dining room color is Grounded SW6089.

Rhome410, I totally get what you're saying - competing colors - but something inside me is saying it will work. That's why I posted here :)

beekeeperswife, thanks for the comments. I think mine is more Hershey's chocolate than bittersweet like yours. :) I commented on your rug thread. My zebra rug came from the PB outlet. It was marked down to $275 and I bought it for my daughter's room. She was with me when I bought it but when we got home decided she didn't want a rug in her room. So it ended up in the DR and I love it there.

pupwhipped, the color is Grounded SW6089. I did consider that the left side of the kitchen will have paint and the right side won't have any paint. That's partly why I mentioned the counter and back splash are stainless. It is a little dark over there and I'm hoping it will be enough to balance it out.

circuspeanut, the "artwork" is really a quilt I was working on and there isn't ANY color in the kitchen. Weimaraner? I would buy that paint just for the name. :) We had a weimeraner when I was a teenager, Rainey, and he was the best dog ever.

lindamarie, I agree to not go too light. I love the deep colors.

bmorepanic, tomato may work but I just can't do it! I may actually paint the inside of the pantry a fun color. The dishes are all Fiesta.

I'm thinking of sticking with the brown in the DR. And maybe Moroccan Red inside the pantry. And consider myself done.

Weimaraner is a very rich deep-toned gray and we love it in our sunny mudroom. I think it would look smashing with brown, but you'd have to test it out with your Fiestaware.

Isn't there a Fiestaware gray you could have copied perhaps? Gray walls would look stunning with a red-bellied pantry!
