I recently saw a similiar oversized closet that had a fabric curtain/drape used over the opening. It was very pleasing visually with the different texture and colors and certainly could be made as an interim closure while something else is worked up.

Thank you for the idea I really would like to use full louvered to match the smaller closet's, 1950's louvered doors.

If you are handy at woodworking/carpentry, you can "box " in each side with some poplar and trims that match the existing trims in the room. You will have to be creative in order to get it to look as original as possible without looking planted. Another avenue is to wait and save for customs and for the heck of it, i would run it by a cabinet/wood shop to see what they would want to duplicate doors for the opening that match up to the smaller closet's 1950's louvered doors.

Add some strips of wood to the sides of a smaller set to make up the needed width.
If you have a pair of standard bi-folds, 8 inches could be added as 1 inch on the edge of each of the eight panels.
Re-cut the hinges mortises, fill in the edges (Minwax High Performance wood filler), sand smooth and paint.

You will need to have some 2x lumber planed to the exact thickness of the doors, and then ripped into 1 inch (net) wide strips.

I would think the easiest solution would be just to refinish the opening to a standard size 72".
