For the past 5 years, my husband and I have been restoring and renovating a pre-Civil War farm house in Hartwood, just north of Fredericksburg, Virginia -- about 20 miles from where we are now. It is my dream house, and its restoration has been more work than I had ever thought it could be. This photo is from early in the process -- the bushes you see are gone. (Burford holly . . . good riddance). We're putting in stone retaining walls and boxwood instead. I just can't go to an old house and feel right unless there's at least a faint smell of boxwood in the air. The restoration was supposed to last 3 years at the most. I started buying roses in preparation for the move. Construction delays, unexpected repairs, and family stuff have put us 2 years behind where we wanted to be. and the rose collection has grown tremendously. I have the room to plant all I have, and much more, I just have to put a plan in place and get it done. Zeffy, when you're better and you'd like to come visit, just let me know. I have said that there are simple things you can do which doesn't entail a great deal of time and money to give you more options to achieve desirable photo effects. One of the annoying things with picture taking is unwanted reflections. You can buy a polarizing filter for your lens and significantly eliminate them. The filter is not expensive from $5.00 to $20. Just find one that fits your lens screw mount. The following side-by-side photos of a soup I made which show identical lighting, exposure, and angle of shot for the pictures. By changing the rotation of the filter, you can cut out a significant amount of unwanted reflections. This can give you better saturation of colors and sharper definition of you subject. As I remember, some time ago Lars was saying that he had problems photographing samples for his work. I think with a polarizing filter, many of his issue would go away. I haven't used Photo Bucket in so long it has changed, it used to be much easier. I hope I got this right, if someone else can explain it better, please jump right in!!!!!
