soft-close mechanism for house doors?

This isn't exactly a repair question but this still seemed like the most suitable forum in which to ask it. I'm wondering if any kind of mechanism exists similar to that which is used to give kitchen cabinets a soft-close, but for house doors? I'd especially like to find something that can easily be attached without any drilling, if such a thing exists. We have a door right below an upstairs bedroom leading to the backyard which is frequently slamming shut. If anybody could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

You can get door closers like the type in public buildings only smaller for doors. There is one which I installed on the back door since kids never seem to close them. It fits onto one of the hinges. They are at any hardware store for 15 bucks. They work pretty good.

Do you happen to recall brand/item name information for what one you bought?

I was going to place an order for a few things through an online store but am not sure how to locate this in the catalog.

I'm not sure whether our soft-close glides relaxed a little, or whether my husband and I adapted to how hard we have to push them to get them to close, but I do remember that things seemed weird right after installing. The fact that I couldn't flick a cabinet door open, but had to have my hand on the handle past that point (you know, if it's within 20 degrees or so of closed it self-closes, but if it's more open than that it self-opens). I wouldn't be surprised if the hinges were especially stiff at the beginning, BUT this was my first soft-close kitchen, so I'm sure a lot of it was just me adapting. Same thing with the drawers, but less so, probably because we followed the suggestion in this thread about putting a slight upward tilt on the glide rails to assist in closing. It seems like a good idea, I think it helped with exactly this issue, but I have nothing to compare it to. I'd give it a month. You'll adapt your motions, the glides will get broken in a bit. Maybe that will make enough difference, but if it's still bugging you, maybe it would be worthwhile to consider moving the back of your glides down by 1/16".

I installed these on all my kitchen cabinet doors after a facelift remodel: https://www.rokhardware.com/hardware-fasteners/soft-close-add-ons/blumotion-soft-close-with-spacer-screws-polybag.html I think I got mine from Rockler for about $3 each, but a lot of places sell them. I installed them all using a Dremel stylus. My cabs are full overlay. No problems. It's been 5 years and nary a slam. I wasn't sure if I'd need the adapter piece, so I ordered one. Ended up not needing the adapter so saved some money getting devices without. Laurie, my doors are painted maple shaker with MDF inserts. They are not super heavy. The door doesn't just up and close on its own. You give it a bit of a shove, as you would with a door that doesn't soft close, and momentum does the rest.

Thanks for trying to help me. I honestly don't know what kind of soft close hardware or glides I have. The cabs are Thomasville. On the drawers that have soft close on them, when I pull out the drawer, the rails stay inside the cabinet box. If I want to remove a drawer, there are little clips under the drawer that I have to click in order to remove it. Like this: (pic from Thomasville's website, it was easier) "> On the wide deep dish drawers, they don't have soft close. When I pull the drawer out, the rails stay with the drawers. I bent over to look to see if there was a name on them, but there isn't. They are full extension, as are all of our drawers. Like this: (pic from Thomasville's website) "> I think that if I have to choose between the pedal opener, and soft close, I'll choose soft close. I know that it's a Rev A Shelf, because the cabinet man was just here yesterday and had to replace it. Trash/Recycling like this: (also from Thomasville's site) "> Anyhow, that is the type I have. I have nothing to add but thanks for the chuckle. Although my soft close doors don't always close with a bump of my hip. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. I wish I had an answer for you but I don't.

I don't have that packaging anymore but it would be referred to as a pneumatic door closer. I'm sure if you google "pneumatic door closer" you'll have hundreds to choose from.

There's simple silicone patches that you can stick to the door post. You can get them from most do it yourself stores, costs about nothing.

I was at Home Depot this evening and saw some door closers you would probably use. They were small and easy to install. The cost range was $8.00-$12.00

In searching for a similar product—albeit for my children's bedroom doors—I found a collection of "door check" products made by a company called Dictator and one is labelled as reasonable for all interior doors. I found them for sale at mrlock.com. I would love to hear from anyone with experience with this or similar hardware.
