So my kitchen began as a dated all wood with blue california tile counters and black appliances. I have gone completely white with grey walls.

You will see red island in the pictures but it is now black with red interior to accent.

What is next:

White carrara marble counters

White antique brick style backsplash or green sub tiles (what do you guys think)

Brick paver floor

Cooktop:

Since the house is already wired for electric I'm considering the Kenmore Pro 1600 Radiant Electric cooktop. It has a Gas look to it with large knobs on the front.

Other option is to splurge AGA Legacy Electric which is almost 3x.

Can't wait to do the marble and finish!

How exciting! I love the red of your island -- I know it's now black, but that red is a real kick.

What shade of green for the backsplash? I'm concerned the brick backsplash might feel too "heavy" for the carrara countertops.

{{!gwi}} a white and black kitchen with carrara countertops and kelly green subway tile backsplash. I guess in my mind's eye, given your pale grey walls, I'm envisioning something more akin to celadon.

I'm looking forward to watching your progress!

Well the green we are considering would be wasabi or stem.

Linda, About the only difference is the size. So, as Dora suggests, you may have more of them on a shelf! The distance from light fixture to top of plant is also less than with standards. You can space your shelves closer together, too. Some recommend the distance for minis should be 6 to 8 inches from light to top of plant. Where as standards 12 or so inches. Also, it is recommended to repot more often than standards. Anywhere from 3 to 6 months. When you repot you usually stay with the same size pot - no need to move into a larger size. You may just use solo cups. Some say they are hard to work with. I guess because they are small. It's just what you get use to, I suppose. Arthritic hands may have problems? I do at times use forceps to take leaves off etc. My knuckle on occasion has broken the leaf above off while I'm trying to pinch a stem or flower off or check the soil. Hope you give them a try. Mac (Week two. One more to go! Maybe Valentines Day I'll have blooms.)

Hi jojo, we love our OKM stove! The oven has a more stable and accurate temperature than our old one. Each of the burners has a double burner, so it can do both fairly high heat and a low simmer. There are a couple drawbacks though. The ovens are small, and the left "oven" is a height-adjustable broiler rather than a true 2nd oven. The racks are also a spaced too closely together to fit cake pans and pies on the middle 2 racks. The stove also has a little quirk in that the right burners sometimes have a hard time lighting if the oven is on (we use a match or use the left hand burners when that happens). We still love the stove though. It is magnificent and everything about it (the knobs, the doors) feels so solid. One thing that is helpful is that there are a lot of repair folk in our area that specialize in these old stoves, and a wonderful man checked it out and adjusted the burners for us when we installed it. I might be more reluctant to get one if that were not the case.

Oh yes, that is good news. I asked, because MY cooktop is currently on an interior wall and we are NOT able to vent with a hood. Complicated reasons but its been the one thing that I now ask about frequently since it is so annoying. That being said, we are moving soon anyway, but I would definitely recommend up draft vs. down. And never give up window space ;-) I think your plans look good and you will love getting that sink out of a corner. I've seen some pictures with the sink offset in the island to minimize it's prominence. But I've seen it in the middle too. There is a thread on here right now that is worried that sink is off center in alignment with the cooktop and kitchen. Sink is in the island. Have you see it? Is' a very pretty kitchen. I would think about though how many cooks are typically in the kitchen. If you aren't careful you could one person at the stove hitting backs with another doing the dishes. S-L-O-W progress ... lowers are done, just need to get the appliances in place and all of the uppers installed. Countertop is templated - next Friday it gets installed, then we start on the backsplash, then add hood & shelves! **MAYBE** a little over 2.5 weeks to go? Demo started on July 3, and we look to be mostly on schedule for being "done" on August 8, a total construction (mayhem) time of 5 weeks. We've only had one bug hiccup so far - my cabinet guy ordered a 30" wide microwave shelf for a 24" drawer microwave -- oops. That won't arrive until August 28 so we'll likely have the MW in place on a tiny table until it's permanent home arrives. The two little ones were a dent in the door (Sears was out in 2 days to swap the door - after trying like heck to get me to keep it as is for $180 -- are you kidding me??!) and the super-adhesive used on the old floor that took an extra day to get up! After almost a month of this ... I'm so ready to be done. Patience is definitely starting to wear thin ... but I'm starting to see a real kitchen developing!

Wow: I love it, especially the island w/ peek-a-boo-red.

Is the painting the cabinets a DIY job? I think I remember you posted a question about painting so many cabinets. If DIY, could you please provide lots of detail, like did you poly over the paint?
I have almost the same oak cabinets (mine may be a bit darker). I also will have a dining area connected like yours (even w/ the similar cathedral ceiling in there). So your kitchen really speaks to me.

I can't wait to see it all with the brick paver floor. (Also another think I'm thinking of getting.)
I'm also getting a rangetop, either Bluestar or Wolf.

I like the white brick backsplash.

Thank you. The red I selected for the island was too bright so we decided to go over it with black and I liked how it looked with the red inside.

We were thinking of painting it all ourselves but all the feed back indicated with the size of the kitchen, the amount of detail required i.e. removal of drawers and doors, sanding, priming, masking of glass, floors, etc it was not a DIY project.

The painters estimated 1 week but took over 2.

All the paint we had done was from Sherwin-Williams

Cabinet Paint: Heavenly White (SW 6553)

Wall Paint: Repose Gray (SW 7015)

Island: (interior) Heartthrob (SW 6866)

Island: (exterior)Tricorn Black (SW 6258)

Both the hutch and the ceiling beam were stained darker.

I guess I completely misunderstood your initial post when you referred to the white antique brick style backsplash: I thought you meant bricks but with a white-washed finish. I have to say I'm so relieved to see your choices!

These are my thoughts:
-I love the greens (esp. the stem). Clearly you are someone who likes color (witness the island's delicious red interior) and either of those greens would give you a wonderful, happy backdrop to the white cabinets and white countertops.
-I also love an all-white kitchen. My kitchen (basically done!) is remarkably similar to yours: white perimeter cabinets, black island, calacatta (white with grey) countertops and full backsplash with a butcher block top on the black island. It's a lot of white which is right for me. I just want to put it out there that many have a hard time with so much white in the kitchen.

Based on your green tiles it seems almost providential I'd have included the link I did above!

Yes, I loved the kitchen you posted in the link. Particularly the use of marble and subway backsplash. I think I may do some sort of mix as well.

I also had planned on using a crystal looking knobs on the main cabinet doors at eye level. Been having a hard time finding some that don't have a backplate however.

The search continues!
