sister a joist with steel?

Hi all,

After opening up a ceiling in our 100 yr old house to gain access for our plumber, we found that someone had really hacked up the 2 x 10 joists when running pipes for shower/toilet. One joist has an inverted "V", leaving only 2 inches of the original joist, as well as large irregular holes.

Would there be any problem sistering this joist with 1/4 inch steel? My husband works in a steel fab shop and can make a 4 or 5 inch wide strip, (several feet or more long), with a plate or lip to go under the joist, and holes for bolts. I'm wondering if there would be any problem with the wood expanding, etc. Also, how many bolts to use--would that weaken the wood in & of itself?

thanks for any ideas!
