I love the look of the 2 leather recliners but could do without my husband's large lazy boy actually.
I wish we had found something smaller.
The truth is that during football season, you can't move hubby or the 2 sons out of them- they love them!

Lori, what a pretty room, exactly what I had hoped could be accomplished! The print chair is the lazy boy? So bigger is not always better? Did your husband want a traditional big boxy recliner or did you give him no say in the matter? What did you take into consideration when you started looking? Anything you remember would be so appreciated. Thanks!

I went through this dilemma a couple of years ago-recliners are definitely comfortable, especially for guys for some reason :). BUT, I absolutely cannot stand to have barcalounger/Archie Bunker style huge hulking overstuffed chairs in the middle of my living room.

So, I searched and searched and searched and finally found recliners that look like club chairs. My husband and son love them. And surprise-so do my daughter and I. Yes, I'm hooked. Nothing like sliding back to watch something mindless on HGTV in my recliner.

If my daughter ever wakes up, I"ll have her show me how to open multiple windows on this Apple Macbook and post a picture!

Recliners are made in all shapes and sizes nowadays that it's easy to find one that doesn't even look like a recliner. Mine's either a La-z-boy or Lane - I forget which, and it's got a cute shape to it, with nailhead trim. It's not overly puffy or Archie Bunkeresque (LOL!), but it sure is comfy and I'm glad I have it.

In a weak moment, after I had splurged on a Lillian August down chair, I let DH pick out a recliner. He's 6'4" and most of his height is above the waist. Armed with fabric swatches, off he went to the nearest LazyBoy. What he bought was the largest, ugliest recliner they sold and he ordered it with their highest grade of leather. Ugh.

Seriously, there are many styles that are both attractive and unobtrusive. And, yes, the guys absolutely love them. Just make sure you go along for the ride. :)

We had one for a couple years, but it wasn't a good fit for my dh who has long legs. His feet would dangle off the end. The really big recliners that might have worked for him were too big for our small space. We finally gave the chair away and bought a club chair with ottoman. Much better fit for those long legs.

I had my dad's recliner recovered and we have been moving it from house to house. It used to be that mustard colour that was popular many years back. I had it done in a pinkish raspberry vinyl. I would like to have had it done in leather. Maybe someday, even though it is getting tired, I don't see us giving it up any time in the future. We will always find it a special place in our home. We left everything original and it feels just like when I used to sit in it at my parents' home. My dad has been gone since 1993 and it feels good to have his favourite chair in our house.

I have been through two back operations and sitting even with feet up on an ottoman for any length of time is difficult. Enter the recliner- I love them! I have an ugly one in the TV room, and I have a new one on order which I saw in a showroom and which had to have a sign on it that said recliner, because it sure doesn't look like one! It will go in the LR, in front of a window and facing the fireplace. The perfect reading place for winter days and evenings.

I have two in my living room and one in my den. They are all smaller ones, not the huge overstuffed kind. I like them, they are comfortable and I think they look fine. I like my house to look nice but I also live in it and want it to be a home.

I also have ceiling fans, I just don't get people who take them out because they don't like how they look.

I actually have one and Love it. My kids and DGKs all fight over it until I show up, they all know it's MY chair. I went to the lazy boy store and they actually made me try chairs until we got the right fit, yep, just like sneakers. But you can have any chair done in any of their fabrics to match your decor. Some of them are quite nice BTW mines a rocker/recliner and it's awesome.

Yes, we each hubby and I have a comfortable leather chaise recliner, in our media rm. to watch TV, also we keep our 2 Tv's in the room high because when reclined you are naturally looking up, not down.. and they are wonderful! we each have a reading light by our chair also.

Although I hate to admit it, there is an Archie Bunker chair in my living room. DH LOVES it!!! I wanted to take it to the trash years ago....but no, what does he do but have the thing recovered~~~ He just turns a deaf ear when I even mention getting rid of it......"it fits him"....with the broken spring and all~~~ But we are planning to move as soon as this house sells, and yes, we have picked out two for the next house....I have had hip replacement and bad knees and find myself liking to put my feet up also......but still not saying, I like the looks of them....just in old age, we need to be comfortable.

Archie Bunker lazy boy in lower level family room here. DH won't give it up without fight. I've taken him shopping three times without success because a) he hates to shop and b)he says "they aren't like mine". That means all broken in and broken mechanisms. *sigh* He's 6'2" and slim, so doesn't need a giant one, but the one we have fits him well because he can stretch out and snooze on it in. It looks OK in normal position, but reclined, watch out. Mechanism in foot rest area is broken, so it tilts downward and leaves it's occupant trapped till they wriggle their way out. Handle doesn't help because it's just a round stub, the end broke off ages ago. He's got a routine for climbing out, he's got really long legs and just throws one over till he's on the side and hops out. Nice new leather sofa, chair and ottoman about 4 yrs ago and I'm still trying to get that recliner out of here. ack!

You guys are too funny! That is what scares me too. Last time I conceded to DH over a bigger TV he brought home a HUGE silver TV thing that was as big as the washer and dryer together!

Soon (I am just beginning to spin the wheels) we will be either buying a large sectional for our living area or sticking with a sofa and two chairs, getting rid of our sofa and loveseat combo. There just does not seem to be enough room with two growing boys for us all to stretch out and be comfortable.

I do like the look of the leather recliners, my in-laws have two huge boxy chenille recliners that sooo cushion you, but having to live with a couple of recliners that say "Hey, I'm a recliner, park your butt here all night and watch TV!" Ack! Okay- maybe they say(in a deeper more sensible voice)"Trust us, comfort is what it is all about." Plus the way my house is the living room is the hub, no hidden family room here,I'd like comfort along with good looks.

Well luckily we have two living areas in our home. The Gentlemen's Parlor and the Ladies Parlor. My hubby has final say on pretty much anything that goes into the GP. It's his room. It has a monstrosity of a TV like NEs hubby's. It also has a two piece sectional with both pieces being the size of a full sized couch, and two lazyboys. One is mine. After my appendix was removed he carried his (all we had at the time) upstairs not realizing they come apart for moving, so I could sleep in it. I was unable to get in and out of bed, even with help, without lots of pain. Two years after that I was in the hospital for cellulitis and though I didn't need to sleep in it he moved to the couch when watching TV so I could keep my legs raised as per doctor's orders. As soon as I was able I purchased a very nice lazyboy for myself through CL so he could have his own back.

So let him have his lazy boy. You'll want one of your own before you know it.

Never Ending, when I was pregnant with twins, I was so big I couldn't breathe when lying down in bed, so I needed to sleep in a recliner. I searched two states over for one I could live with and either I couldn't get in and out of them with my big stomach or they were so ugly I couldn't stomach (no pun intended) them. So finally, I decided to rent one for the duration of the pregnancy (I was on bedrest). I put it beside the bed in the master. It was big. It was blue. It was corduroy velvet. It was the ugliest chair you have ever seen in your life. But it was so soft and comfortable. And I could get in and out of it. And the remote would fall through the cracks, and I would have to wait until my husband got home to get it for me because I was so fat I couldn't get it myself. And I loved that recliner. But then I delivered the twins and I turned on that recliner. I told my husband to have the thing picked up before I got home from the hospital. And he did. And that's the story of the only recliner I've ever owned. I hope I don't get turned into Recliner Protective Services.

The other 2 leather recliners are Chloe, by Lane.
I love these, you can't even tell that they are are recliners...try to look at them/sit in them if you can, okay?

My dh also wanted a recliner, but I didn't want the "recliner look". So, we now have 2 lazy-boy leather wing back recliners. I will admit, I like mine as well, and dh falls asleep in his regularly. Everyone comments on how comfortable they are. Here are ours:

There are so many recliners that don't look the least bit "reclinery" that given certain factors I wouldn't hesitate to have one in my house. (But like sneakers you do have to "try them on" to make sure they fit!)

I did want to mention, though, that one of my former cats got in under the recliner when it was open, without anyone knowing she'd snuck underneath, and was rather nastily injured by the metal mechanism when the recliner was closed up. Big slash all down her back. Itty-bitty dogs may well have the same risk if they like to explore. Just something for those who are considering recliners to think about.

never_ending, our LR (no FR) is quite small and we got a sectional last year - don't regret it one bit. Couch and loveseat wasted a big 3' square chunk of space in the corner we couldn't really afford to lose with only a 12x16 room. There are so many good-looking sectionals out there now, they're not all those big 80s-esque flabby Buddha-belly things that still populate cheap furniture stores (apologies to those who have one and love it, of course - YMMV).

Johnmari- thanks for the info. I can do a two full size sofa sectional with a corner wedge in our space, or a smaller sectional with a recliner, or a sofa with 2 (yes) 2 recliners. Everyone's recliners DO look so nice. Thanks for sharing and bringing your recliners out in the -open-. :-)

I have my own horror story with a recliner too! As a child I was fighting with my dearest cousin over a recliner at my grandfather's, did not see her finger in the mechanism and slammed it closed. Not a good memory, maybe that is my aversion to recliners - repressed guilt and post trauma? Ha!

After I clean up today I will take the GIANT leap and post a picture and you guys can tell me what you think would work best for the space.

I've always felt a huge sense of relief that my DH isn't a recliner kind of guy (likes to recline on the sofa) but after seeing lori and lafonda's I almost wish he did want one. Those really look nice. Now you both have me rethinking the chairs I was going to put in the office/den.

1) American Leather is what we have upstairs and...

2) Two Laz-y-boy's in basement - more of the theatre room look. They are really bad with the lights and all!!! But I am told they are comfy. I am still protesting. Maybe I will give in at football season...oh, and they go with a reclining sofa so there is room for 5 to sit and 4 to recline. My butt is getting bigger by the minute...

loribee, where did you get the Chloe recliners in leather? I found them on the Macy's website, but they didn't offer leather. I like those but prefer the leather myself. I have a leather recliner now, but it's too big (and kinda puffy!), and I sure would like to have something smaller and more tailored looking. I found one at Sam's Club of all places recently, but it was not the right color (it was more of a saddle brown and I want more of a chocolatey brown).

I got them at a local furniture shop...but have seen them online at Macy's.

Well, I googled Chloe leather recliner and see some stores near Hickory NC have them in leather. I have friends who live near there (I live near Raleigh NC), so I may have to plan an extended weekend trip to visit! Thanks for letting me know that they do still come in leather, loribee!

I hate to tell you that there were about 50 choices for color!
I sat by the window with the swatch book for hours and finally picked the leather color that looked most like a football I'd say, LOL!
I'm sure they were thinking what a nut...it's not such a difficult choice!

That Chloe recliner had me spending quite a bit of time on the lane website. Unfortunately, I don't see any fabrics that would work although there are some great ones. I too would need to sit my butt in the chair to see how it was, but lookswise, that's a great one.
I have been converted to appreciate the unmatchable comfort of a comfy recliner. Just need to find one (or 2) that will work for us.

I recently bought a black leather Stressless recliner made by Ekornes. I am not extremely excited about the way it looks, but I have neck problems and finally could not tolerate my wing back chair anymore. It is the most comfortable chair you can imagine. I had to compromise looks vs pain relief. Now my family grabs the chair if I am not in it! I have a friend who has had hers for years and it still is in fabulous shape. I hate the bottom of the chair more than anything. Have not figured out how to post pictures yet, sorry.

Great leather recliners with good leather will not be cold in winter, hot in summer, but will take on the temperature of your body and will smell like you did the last time you sat in them whereas fabric can be hot in summer and hot in winter, smell like the hundreds of meals you cooked several days thereafter. ;-)
