Pictures of Repaired Popcorn Ceiling

My DH fell through the ceiling while insulating the attic. Of course we have awful popcorn ceilings. Just wanted to share the pictures of the repair I did. I used Homax Popcorn Ceiling Texture. If the Homax did not work, I was going to take down the texture, and was not looking forward to that job. The repair size was 48"X48". I hate drywall dust....LOL The picture with the big dark spot is the wet spray texture. The next picture is the spray texture dried.

Bravo! That is an excellent repair job. None better. I'd hired pro's to do such in my former house as I couldn't get the result you got on my own.

I stuck my foot through the ceiling in my current house some years ago. Busted my butt good but I recovered after a week or so. Hope your guy is OK.

DH stuck his foot through the closet in the other guest room, and got quite a bruise on his behind!! When he did this great big hole, he did not even hurt himself. He is fine, but his days in the attic are over...hahaha

There are kits sold at HD/Lowes/etc. designed to replicate popcorn ceiling texture. The kits contain two rollers and a pad that are used with the textured paint and can almost perfectly match the popcorn look. You have to experiment with technique and roll the texture in several directions, but I have used those kits on several repair jobs---for which I was paid-----and the customers were quite pleased with the results. You do need to cover furniture/floors with plastic, but that is the only prep needed.

Breezygirl, this does help since one of the reasons my kitchen was going to cost so much was because I wanted to remove the empty soffit and install 36" cabinets with crown molding. Most stores wanted to then remove all the popcorn first in all rooms downstairs telling me they could not patch it up. My most recent quote was in January 2014 and the contractor was going to put a beam to separate the rooms which I did not like as he said he had to remove the popcorn. I prefer no beam and to have just a straight line with the other room having popcorn if it costs too much to remove. I will try to take a picture of my kitchen. I love my tiles and it is helping to see that BM Simply White looks best with my tiles. I am going to put the recessed lights in my living room which is my home office and leave the fixture in the dining room part of the home office. I will then see if that room becomes a mess (has no lights in the ceiling now) before seeing who can patch up my ceilings. I will revisit my kitchen cabinets after the lighting is done downstairs, my wood floors are installed in the other three rooms to close out my insurance claim and my windows and doors downstairs are replaced as the vinyl has cracked and it is cold in the winter time. I really want kitchen cabinets and a counter like Breezygirl. I needed tiles due to little dogs going in and out the sliding door in the kitchen and having a KitchenAid dishwasher that will be 5 years old at the end of October with now poor reviews of a failing pump. I can't afford another insurance claim for my wood floors. I am only using the dishwasher if I am home. I paid a lot for this dishwasher.

Popcorn Ceiling Removal...Is it worth it?

Hi Everyone, I wanted to report back about what we ended up doing. We hired a drywall company and had the popcorn ceiling scraped off, and they then did several coats of 'skim coat plaster'. They did a great job and the ceiling looks great! It looks higher than with the popcorn. We are having it painted now, and then will repaint the walls ourselves. Our new kitchen cabinets arrive April 6th., so all should be done and ready for their installation. I am very happy we decided to remove the popcorn on the ceiling. Our rooms look larger, and ceilings higher, and not so dated. It was well worth the expense, and mess, and we were able to stay at a friend/neighbors house while they were out of town. Thank you all for your advice & input.

pkpk23, do you have any photos of what you're talking about? I've never heard of using your hands to press a pattern! ... assuming it is a pattern and not just a random hand print here and there. lol! Also really wondering if you used ordinary joint compound or the quick-setting stuff you have to mix yourself? I've worked with ordinary joint compound since I was a kid, but have never dealt with mixing my own or the quick-setting version. I've got two ceilings that came with a swirl pattern that then apparently had sand (or whatever they use for 'popcorn') thrown on top of that... it's very dense and clumpy in some spots, sparse in others, unevenly textured, and looks like an overall bad job was done to create it. I've tried scraping the worst spots several times over the years but really cannot budge it because it's been painted over so many times, I guess, so I've tried painting more to "fill in" but that doesn't work. I've been thinking of doing a skim coat on those ceilings using ordinary joint compound and wonder if it really is that much different from the quick-set stuff. Anything would look better than it looks now. :p Last year I primed those ceilings thinking I'd then try a skim coat of JC, but panicked and backed off after reading that I should only use quick-set JC. :p

Bigal-It was a spray by Homax called Popcorn Ceiling Repair Spray. Just spray until you think it looks good. It goes on darker, but like drywall mud, it lightens when dried. It is a little difficult to apply because it is under really high pressure, and if you use it be sure to plastic walls and floors. I made a plastic box around the area using push pins to hold up the plastic to the ceiling where there were no walls. Always read the instructions on the can, because they can be invaluable. Have to use really short bursts of the spray. Be sure you get enough cans, and even more than you think. You can always return what you don't use. DH said we bought all the Homax spray in the Charleston, SC area. He didn't complain, can you guess why? LOL.

You did a GREAT job!!! We took all of ours off and hired someone to put up spantex! Wish we would've tried what you did and save ourselves $1000.

Those pictures look like the "how to" adds and great results they say they get and we usually don't. Wonderful job. You should be really pround of yourselves. Sandy

I repaired a popcorn ceiling. I scraped off the loose area, taped and floated the bad seam. Added paint to the popcorn and hopped the area. Then I sprayed the whole ceiling with flat white latex paint. The repair was bright white but the rest of the ceiling is a slightly darker color? How do I fix This?

I had a pro do an area on mine ( actually a pro painter but he said he could do this spot) anyway, your job looks better than my pro painter's job!
