Cold weather can reduce mileage due longer warmup time. Another factor is more rolling resistance from the tires. Around here, a factor is our winter blend of gasoline. Extra ethanol and oxygenators are added (by EPA mandate). Two weeks ago, our local newspaper reporter was able to run 4 tanks of fuel through his vehicle: two with our winter blend and two outside this location with conventional blend. All driving was under approximately the same road conditions and speed, mostly highway. He reported a 2 mile per gallon reduction for our local blend. I know this was not an exacting test, but it does show the same trend I've expereinced. (I keep a log of miles and fuel used in all my vehicles.) In the winter, I drive a 4x4 Jeep Cherokee, 6cy, 4.0 L engine. In summer, it tops out at 20 MPG and falls to 16 in the winter. The temperature was 15 F below 0 this morning, and it took a trip of 7 miles to bring the engine up to temperature.

If you would care to try then as you start the computer keep tapping the F8 button and a screen will appear with start up options. Select safe mode, everything will look totally different to the normal startup because only essential drivers have been allowed to start. My concern was the fact you mentioned AVG was not running properly. That is a good indicator of trouble. On reading the initial post a second time it appears you overcame that issue

crl_ I agree that there's a lot that can be done while still being sensitive to the fact that it is a log home. The photo above is interesting in that there is still a lot of wood, but it's clearly a lot more inviting. The open shelves and simple lines suggest an informality that would be keeping with a cabin. If using different cabinets, I'd avoid turned legs, routed edges, or anything that is too "fancy" in this case. Don't forget that rugs, open shelves with light/color and other accessories can add color and light. I believe the issue of the layout and such requires drawings and better photos. I've always had the range in the island -- for me that works so much better than the sink in the island. I feel strongly that sink, dishwasher, upper cabinets for storing dishes, should all be on the same wall and close proximity. However, you make a good point about the outside wall and venting. The photos suggest a very limited kitchen size --- which contributes to the feeling of it being dark. OP: Any chance we could see a floor plan?

I also live in a log home, we built it ourselves (DH & I) 13 years ago. I truly like the cozy feel of all the wood but it does lack natural sunlight (which is why I am always outside!) Because our home is so remote, the only home on 27 acres and a dead end, I don't use window dressings at all, other than the bedroom, which does have blinds. This helps brighten it up quite a bit and I have a lot of lamps, plants, colorful scatter rugs, pillows & throws. This works well & I get a lot of compliments on my decorating. I will say this, at first, I went a bit crazy with "cabin decor" and I lean more toward rustic yet colorful now. Be careful not to try too hard for the lodge look as it can get old & boring quickly.
