Window height...different than door and other windo

I want one HUGE window over my sink and it goes almost all the way up to the ceiling. It's about 6 inches down from ceiling and the door will be about a foot down from ceiling. There is a window in the dining room that will be lower. Is that okay or should they really all start at the same point.

It will be a special order size and 2 more weeks if I make them all start at the same height.

Jan jan is it a single story house or two story? The reason I asked was we wanted a taller window in our kitchen above the sink but had we done that we would have been able to see the soffit outside. If it's a two story with nothing outside then of course it doesn't matter.

I've seen windows and doors that were varying heights and thought they looked fine if they weren't directly in the same line of sight as one that is much lower or if they had a transom above them which made them taller and a little different than another door or window. Will it look good from the exterior is another thing to consider.

Consider the exterior, but inside it may look fine if the cabinets on either side are the same height as the trim on top of the window. If the window is the tallest thing in the room, it may look strange.

Since you asked "what would you do?", what I would do (which isn't what others here would do, and I'm not criticizing them) is to fix it with trim. Honestly, I don't think anyone will notice unless you point it out to them. My front door is trimmed below the two windows next to it and I never noticed before this post. I am very particular about a lot of things, but this isn't a battle I would choose since the cost to change is so high and the the resulting fix is so small. When we were building our home 14 years ago, we had a couple of minor probems, both of which our GC offered to pay to fix. We declined since neither were a big deal to us. If it were a question of safety, that's another story. I understand those who say make them fix it. It is your money and you're paying to get what you want. But, you're obviously thinking twice about it or you wouldn't have asked the question. Economic times are tough, and it could be one of the lowest paid workers on the job who has to end up paying for this error. Dee

JaneSylvia, I'm no window/door expert but my DH and I have some experience. I'm only familiar with Argon gas in Andersen windows. Its heavier than air and has a higher R-value than regular air. Our first dual pane windows were made in 1975 by International (no longer in business). The seals broke on them within 10 years and were so bad you could hardly see through them. Whatever you do, make sure they have at least a 20-yr guarantee against glass failure. You absolutely want LOW-E glass. Having had both regular dual pane and Low-E (Andersen casement) there is no comparison between the two. Plain dual-pane doesn't do much for keeping the heat out in summer. My DH replaced windows and 2 patio doors in a rental house with Jeldwen from Home Depot. Retro is much easier if you're doing the install, but it does reduce the visible glass so it makes your window smaller. Of course, its only as secure as your original frame when the house was built. The Jeldwen from HD are all vinyl and we did have a bad experience with them. My husband accidently hit his boot against the frame of the patio door and a 7" long piece of vinyl broke off. To our amazement the piece was hollow, not solid vinyl. Jeldwen would not replace the door even though it was brand new. Said it was our fault. We think its a design flaw. If you're going to stay in your home and can afford it, I would recommend Andersen. They make a retro window but we've only had experience with their new construction 400 series casement windows and their 12' Frenchwood Glider (it looks like a French door and not a patio door, i.e., 9" bottom wood rail). I also love their screens. They have strong mesh (not the normal fiberglass cloth) and you'll love the way they easily clip in and out for cleaning (we have casement windows). Yeah you’re getting a lot of flack for a straightforward question. Agree. The OP's question is quite reasonable. No one else is going to watch your dollars as carefully as you yourself -- not even the pros with whom you work. In general, I've rarely been disappointed by "doing my homework" and learning as much as possible about the topic at hand. A standard window size produced by a particular manufacturer will be cheaper than a custom size by that same manufacturer. It makes sense to design with standard sizes if possible. Sensible -- and something several people have said. I think the OP is asking though, What sizes are considered "standard"? Non functional windows like picture windows are the cheapest. Right, but you don't want non-functional in many places: up high in a vaulted ceiling room, where you can't reach the windows ... a wide/short up above a shower ... maybe in a room like a closet, where you'd never actually open the window, a pier glass next to a front door. That's all I can think of. But, yeah, using stationary windows in certain spots can be a good choice -- partially because they're cheaper, but also because fewer moving pieces means less to go wrong. IMO windows are kind of the eyes of your home and that is not where you try to low ball pricing. Agree except for the "IMO". I think most people agree that windows are a real make-or-break item, and they're really, really not a place to skimp. That's what you'd call False Economy, and I think we can call that a fact instead of an opinion.

I agree, how it looks from the outside is the most important factor. All of ours are at the same height, with different lengths.

Hmmm I didn't even think of the outside look. Well, it's the only window on that wall and you can't see any other windows so outside is not an issue, but that was a good point I didnt think about! It is a two story house. Oh and the cabinets go all the way to the ceiling on both sides and there are no other windows on that wall so I think it's okay. I have to decide by tomorrow morning at 8am when they start framing so I am SOOOO EXCITED you guys answered so quickly. :) Thank you! I really want my big window and I think it will look so pretty. I think I will go for it. I'm going to look through some magazines and hope to find some with different height windows to make hubby feel better. :)

The window for over my sink is different than the others in the house. My architect had suggested a casement window in the kitchen (why - I can't remember now, but I am sure she had a good reason at the time and I must have agreed with it). Here is how it looks (granted there is no siding, but you get the idea). I think it looks fine. The window to the right is in the bedroom so they are not in the same room.

They may have suggested casements over the sink if you were planning on having a deep sill. We put in a sill that is 10 inches deep so if you add the depth of the cabinetry to that it would have been nearly impossible to try and open a double hung window without standing on a chair or something, so we opted for casements.
