Cheaper to Reuse Baggies or Plastic?

I used to wash out my ziplock lunch baggies and re-use them. Even had DH make me a small stand with dowels that stood out to hold the baggies open to dry.

But I started realizing how much water I was wasting by hand washing them. Now I just use plastic containers that I can put in the dishwasher and I don't buy baggies any more. (I had read that the dishwasher uses less water than hand washing.)

What is your opinion?

We use plasticware for everything in packed lunches, not just sandwiches, but we wash them by hand. I never wash anything made of plastic in the dishwasher - which is why my 30+ year old Tupperware is still being used today. When we do use a plastic bag, it's washed with the dishes in the sink, rinsed, dried and reused.

I just read recently where Energy Star DWs use 4-gallons of water and non-Energy Star can use 6-7-gallons. A typical use of water for hand-washing is 5-7 gallons. So, you do the math for how much water you would use doing dishes by hand based on approx. how much water you think you use.

I can beat the Energy Star DW water use....it's not as convenient, but it conserves more water than using a DW once a day.

After every meal (or 2-3 times a day) we wash dishes that don't go in the DW, and for general clean-up after a meal, in 1-gallon of water. We only run a full load of dishes in the DW every 3-4 days. So even using 2-3 gallons a day for dishes, it still beats running a DW once a day.

1. I have to run SOME water after a meal ANYWAY for washing things that don't go in the DW and general clean-up.

2. We use "saved" water (save it from the cold water that runs in the shower before the water gets hot) for washing dishes by hand.

3. We use a small plastic tub in the sink, rather than filling a large sink with several unnecessary gallons of water.

4. Heat 5-cups of saved water in an ELECTRIC kettle, which only takes a couple minutes, if that. An electric kettle heats water faster than a kettle on the stove or a microwave because the heating element is in contact with the water. This also saves the hot water heater having to kick on for a small amount of hot water, and the wasted cold water that goes down the drain waiting for the water to get hot.

5. Put the hot water in the plastic tub along with approx. 5-cups of cold water (also from the saved 1-gallon of water) and a very small amount of soap.

6. Use the remaining 6-cups of water from the gallon for rinsing the dishes. (16-cups of water in a gallon)

There is no doubt these cheap pots are not the same as "real" terra cotta, as I said above. I just don't know if they're even worth $2 - $3. The garden centers that sell Italian or other well-made terra cotta are not ripping people off, those are much higher quality pots with a much more time-consuming fabrication process. It's fascinating to read about, if interested, lots of info out there. Some people can tell by the sound it makes when gently tapped, and there are a lot of other facets to inspect when trying to know if you're looking at a high quality piece of terra cotta or not, but the price is usually the best one. "Cheap, but disposable, is not cheap." Well said! I was just wondering how cheap. Since I've got some now, I'll be sure to report if/when they crumble or whatever it is they do. And hey, above I was so busy savoring Larry's comment about humidity that I forgot my other point. I totally agree, the few of these cheap clay pots I've gotten seem much more porous than I remember, but I didn't soak them before using. I put succulent cuttings in most of them, a few already-rooted plants, so didn't think I should. Fast-drying is what I wanted for the succulents for which these were purchased, but could be way too much to deal with for people who don't like to water or don't have the time daily, especially coupled with a very porous soil. Eahamel yes, I'm famous for eyeing a plastic container and putting holes in it to make a pot. And like Tropic, I never throw away the nursery pots unless/until they crack too badly to hold dirt. People also put stacks of nursery pots out in the spring after installing new plants. Not so much where I live now, but I used to get a lot this way. The space under the back porch had hundreds of pots but they're all in use, or given away with newly propagated plants in them. I agree, those coffee cans are great and you can cut them off if the plant won't come out later. Same with Pringles cans, great for roots that like to go straight down, but these don't stand up well if they're outside in any wind. There are tons of fantastic ideas on the frugal forum if people are looking for more freecycling pot ideas. I still do this, and will continue. I'd just like to have a more cohesive, less jumbled, mish-mashed, mad scientist-looking front porch this year. "I'm not even going to get into plastic's environmental issues." Well I don't mind, and your comment gives me 2nd thoughts. I probably could finagle repotting so that all of the "front row" pots visible from the street are green and terra. Two pot colors would be a radical reduction. Just keep working this strictly from a re-using angle, not further contributing to the glut of unnecessary plastic by buying more pots just because they're a different color. I don't need to make any more purchases just to have pots for more plants when one can repurpose so many containers that would otherwise get thrown...

Yeah, if holes in the bottom for drainage and leaves sticking out (whether top not zipped or bag laid on its side and X cut for plant) that would work. Like a pot but cheaper - as long as you can get it to drain well. Might be easier to use something like disposable foil "cupcake" or individual cake pans they sell around the holidays. poke a few holes in the bottom and they're a little more rigid than baggies so when it's time to cut the "apron strings" and move the runners they'll be easier to pick up.

My wife has a few 'plastic' pots that she uses for herbs, and places on the deck outside our kitchen. My biggest use of them is in starting the seeds each year. I used peat pots for many years, and was always annoyed at the amount of failures, and resulting re-plants. I have found a better way, especially for my tomatoes and peppers. I use these bio-sponges to germinate the seeds, and then when they have about 2 or 3 leaves, I move them into small plastic pots(square) that are almost 4 inches deep, and 3 1/2 inches square. (with potting soil filler) They have consistently done much better than the peat pots ever did. Some suggests that the peat absorbs too much moisture, maybe. When it comes to planting in the garden, they pop out of the plastic pots quite easily, with their roots well developed and holding it all together. This year, I tried using these foam shipping trays for wine bottles. I buy a case of wine, now and then, and when they are shippped, they come in foam formed containers for the bottles. I realized they are not too wide, but nice and deep, so thought I should try them for my seedlings. I lined each cylinder shape with wax paper, then put in the plant which grew in the biosponge, with the soil filler. I'll be putting them in the ground later this week, so will be anxious to see if they pop out easy enough with the wax paper. They also grew very well from the seedling stage. We'll see!

Like CMK, I too have had success growing Rudbeckia hirta cultivars via the winter sowing method, among them Cappucino, Cherry Brandy, Autumn Colors & Irish Eyes, as well as a number of others. I find recycled milk jugs to be more effective protection against the ravages of winter storms--ice, snow, & wind. Winter sown plants are much more robust than their nursery-grown counterparts--many of my seed-grown R. hirta cultivars have returned every year since they were first planted in 2010. Since I mulch heavily over corrugated cardboard, I'm assuming the plants return rather than self-seed.

You don't need a full sink of water to wash one zipper bag as Grainlady alluded. And I'm not sure that a few potato chips or a sandwich would require that much sanitizing for a bag to be washed and reused. Plastic wrap would be cheaper. My dad's lunch was wrapped mostly in wax paper and would be brought home and reused. Nobody uses wax paper anymore. I still like it for a lot of things.

Solid containers would be easier to wash, dry and for that matter sanitize if you feel the need. They'd last longer so in the long run, if you continue to use them, they'd pay for themselves. You could also use the infamous margarine/dairy topping tubs too. One of the small margarine cups used to fit a large donut perfectly. Saw a guy at work with that and I thought it was a great idea. No real cost involved, EASY to wash and dry, and I'd have several so I didn't have to wash it each day. Or I'd give it a rinse and wipe it and use it. The dairy topping (ala "Cool Whip") tubs work great for salads.

A lot depends on your typical menu.

You run a bucket of hot water (plus deterg.?) ... just to wash one baggie??

When, over period, you've accumulated 50 baggies ...

... all washed ...

... and just waiting to be used ...

... whadda ya *do* with 'em??

I'll use the margarine tubs to store regular stuff in the frig. ... but when it comes to tomatoes, etc. which are acidic ... I prefer to use a soup bowl, etc. as I'm not sure that I want the acids leaching stuff that might be nefarious out of the plastic buckets.

I also prefer washing them to washing the baggies.

I know what to do with the round tubes that held frozen juices, after washing - stick pencils, pens in 'em on the desk.

Put candies, peanuts, etc. in 'em, for handy use near the computer. Stick an individual plastic yogurt cup in the top, if bothered by flying bugs, moths, etc.
