How to connect vent duct to roof jack?

We are going to have a 10" round duct installed from our kitchen vent hood and it will exhaust thru the roof. I can't find a roof jack off the shelf anywhere that will fit that large a duct, so we might end up getting one made. So, I don't know what size to make it, and I think it depends on how the duct is attached to the roof jack. The roof jacks I've seen are tapered, wider at the bottom than the top. One person suggested that the *top* of it (the narrow end) should be 10" so you can attach the duct there. Someone else said it should be 10" at the bottom and narrow to 8" at the top.

So, having never attached a duct to a roof jack...how do they normally attach, and what size does it need to be? It's a smooth metal duct.

The link below is to a vendor that sells roof caps that accept 10" duct. Pricing should also be much less than having one made! Don't forget to make sure there is a high-quality damper in this duct to minimize leakage into and out of the house; the Fantech models are good models (personal experience). The suggested location for the damper is at the thermal interface of the house - usually where the attic insulation terminates in the attic.

You might try a roofing supply company or a sheet metal fabricator.
I would attach the ductwork to a starting piece. It's a 10 " short piece of duct with bendable fingers on the end. I cut a piece of plywood to fit between the joists and then cut the hole size of the duct. Put the fingers through and bend it back on the plywood. Tack nail it in a few places so it stays where you put it. Then screw the ply to the roof deck. Then just connect the feed duct to it and put a few short screws through it and wrap it with aluminum tape. Pull the insulation over the duct and tape that.
If you can't find a starting duct in the size you need, just cut the end of a duct into bendable segments.
If it's a 10 " duct ,then it's 10 from start to finish.

Note that this is advice for cold-dry climates: "When insulating any roof, you need an air space of at least two inches between the underside of the roof sheathing and the top of insulation. Proper vents can be stapled to the roof sheathing to create an uninterrupted airflow. The soffit and ridge should also have venting. Install a good vapor barrier under the insulation."

For the wall vent option, also consider the proximity of operable windows. Codes vary by locality, so you should probably call you local building inspector for clarification, but in my city in Northern California the vent must be >=3' from any operable windows. Folks above are correct that 90s in ducts result in pressure drop, but you're talking about a short run with a single bend, and you could always run a slightly larger duct if you were concerned about it, so I don't think the pressure drop from the single turn is a significant consideration because it's gonna work well either way. Primary considerations are: cost to install, how it looks, if smoke will find it's way back into house or otherwise annoy outside.

I think the key word above is "appear" because to me these OTR microwave ovens look like they are not flush by two or three inches. From an earlier post: "If I can use the top vent [to] go up through the cabinet and resolve the ductwork above that cabinet, that vent will care for the stove venting and the magnatron venting, and I would not need a MW with a front-facing louver." In my view, neither this nor any other microwave oven venting scheme I'm even vaguely aware of will "care for the stove venting" because they move far too little air per unit time and the units do not overhang the burners sufficiently. Perhaps if a supplementary blower designed for higher pressure loss is used in the path taken by the this so-called ventilation to augment the flow rate, barely adequate air flow will be possible. But even then, capture area will be too small to have much effect on front burner plume capture. You can design for style and give up on having adequate ventilation, or design for adequate ventilation and give up on OTR microwave ovens. Your statement "For what it's worth, most of the cooking on our stove is boiling water or soup, scrambling eggs, or simmering an occasional kettle of sauce." suggests that you can get away with doing the former. In that case, provide manufacturer specified cooling paths for the magnetron, and ignore limitations of the mediocre or worse ventilation. And don't sear steaks on the cooktop before baking them in the oven.

You did great with the hard duct angle and foil tape. That’s exactly what needs to happen here. The hard duct needs to terminate into the roof cap and be sealed. You may need to remove that and create multiple sections to make that happen since the duct below has been fixed by you sealing it to your hood. A hood can not terminate inside the attic, which this one does, because it isn’t properly connected to the roof cap. A duct can’t use flex duct. The small aerosolized grease particles that escape the larger filter trap will accumulate in the ridges of flex duct. That creates a fire hazard.

First, does the hood require such a large duct. Even most residential "commercial style" hoods only require 8". Be sure to follow duct guidelines in the installation manuel or performance may be affected. It is possible to make duct work too large and cause the air velocity to fall beyond an acceptable rate. You should be able to find this size roof jack from a manufacturer at a much better price than having it fabricated. A 10" jack will have a 10" opening at the roof decking, which will allow you to slip the crimped end of a piece of duct into it, support the duct with strapping or angle clips, tape with foil tape, and seal with duct mastic. Or, before the jack is installed, attach a starting collar( available at ac supply) to it, so that the collar will stick below the roof decking and provide an easy connection for the duct. Use foil tape on all joints, not cloth duct tape which will fail in a few years.
