You won't find seedlings but you can find small grafted starts - ForestFarms, Bloomriver and a few other mail order sources offer it. If you are interested in maples that have "ghost" as part of their name, there is an entire 'Ghost' series of Japanese maples developed by Talon Buchholz of Buchholz and Buchholz Nursery in Oregon -- 'Amber Ghost', 'Sister Ghost', 'New Ghost', 'Purple Ghost', 'Ghost Dancer', etc. All are reticulated sports and feature delicate veined, patterned foliage. I grew 'Ghost Dancer' in my old garden and it truly was a stunning plant. These all need protection from afternoon sun, even in my mild climate. FWIW, named forms of JM's are never seedlings and these are notoriously tricky to grow from cuttings, so looking for small grafted plants may be your best bet.

The Ghost thing is a marketing tool that has been used by Buchholz and Buchholz Nursery in Gaston Oregon to introduce a partially unrelated group of maple selections. All of the plants are are reticulated, meaning they have contrasting veining in the leaves, and all but Purple Ghost are variegated, meaning they have a white or cream coloration in the leaf. Some are seedling selections from variegated/reticulated parents and some are branch sports, but they are not all from the same parent source. For certain, at least one is from Aka/Beni shigitatsu sawa and one is from Kasgiyama. Others maybe have different parental origins. I don't feel much like a dissertation beyond this, but the whitest of the bunch is First Ghost, supposedly a branch sport form Aka/Beni shigitatsu sawa. It is similar in leaf to this plant, but the overall coloration is much closer to the light form of Peaches and Cream which is a selection from Shigitatsu sawa. So, the "Ghostly White" deal is just a play on the coloration that has existed in other long-time varieties like Aka/Beni shigitatsu sawa, Shigitatsu sawa, Reticulatum, Peaches and Cream. First Ghost is just a bit more white than the above list but no where near the white that one of the forms of Ukigumo can achieve in a good year. I like the Ghosts and have all that have been made available in the trade, but it would not be fair to say that there some great unique thing about them other then their names. They are all nice plants, but they are not transparent white or ghostly. There is a huge push but this nursery and others to continue to select reticulated-variegated seedlings and branch sports for introduction. These plants are not terribly easy to grow and are very collectible intorductions. Certainly have a strong growing Shigitatsu sawa, and Aks/Beni shigitatsu sawa, and possibly Kasagiyama should be the foundation plants in a collection for these charactersitics. It is possible that First Ghost may have a bit more vigor than Peaches and Cream with very similar coloration making it a good potential substitute. It is also possible that Purple Ghost might have a deeper color than the standard form of Kasagiyama, making it desireable. I have not seen stable coloration in my Purple Ghost, so I am hesitant to say that just yet, but it, rather than the white Ghosts, is actually the cornerstone of the series. FYI: Sister Ghost has nice initial coloring, but the cream quickly takes on a green tone. The Ghostly effect in that one is very short-lived. Related to Butterfly, Kocho nishiki, if grown in the right sun can be very white also, turning to cream. The Oregon form of Butterfly will also have a high degree of cream if give enough sun, but a smaller leaf, more like Butterfly. I typed too much again!

Most information(summer/fall color) provided pertaining to cultivars of Acer pal. (jap. etc) are based on how they perform/act in "soil", not "fake" soil. There are so many things we wish we could replicate (sp?) in containers, compared to soil grown (nutrition,temp.,biology,etc.), I have yet to see someone who has if figured it out (in my personal exp.). If you find a "trick" that works for a certain cultivar, provides "you" with what "you" want or makes the plant perform how "you" wish/hope it would...try it on the other forms to see if it creates the same results.Even results from someone in another part of the country/world may not work for you....finding what works for you, in your enviroment,for your plants/cultivars takes time..... you wont easily find it in a book.........

Wonderful job Hazel....I figured there was lots of potential for this one.....I usually follow the tut for the 1st attempt & then redo it with my own images....I like your backgrounds a lot better than the ones that came with the tut....

What font did you use?....its very pretty...

Probably as messy as you! I have however just started about a month ago with a floder I keep on my desktop fonts that I have downloaded for new tuts.

I think we all work out something that works for us....I use the old "folders in a folder" method....I opened a main folder in My Documents & called it, what else but Fonts....then inside I have sub folders for the type of font; Calligraphy, Patterns, Christmas, Script, Dingbats & Frames etc...whatever title means something to you.....

Then I downloaded & installed a little freebie called Fast Font Preview (there's all kinds of other viewers)....I open Fast Font, direct it to my Font folder, choose a sub folder, & then all those fonts are displayed on the screen, makes it a lot easier to choose, rather than trying to remember what they look like....

Its whatever works for you!.... : ))

Carol, I'm not organized, I'm just lazy!!....LOL....I finally got tired of hunting through all those fonts looking for just the right one...

Now if only I could get my brushes to behave I'd really be happy... : ))

Well, I admire all the great improvisations you people do - I'm afraid I still have to follow the tut (almost exactly):

(Oh, by the way, I have a folder on my desktop called PSP stuff which has a fonts folder in it, but I am always forgetting to put new fonts in it...LOL)

Beautiful Elly! Actually I think the original tut is perfect the way it is, sometimes I just like to add my own little personal touch. Then again sometimes I drive myself crazy when I don't follow it exactly.
Hazel, you just have to open the font, minimize it, and it will appear in your drop down list of font choices in PSP.
