Staircase finishing question

We revamped our old carpeted staircase with new oak threads, oak posts and wrought iron balusters. One culprit which I did not think of before removing the old carpeting was the quality of risers. When the old carpeting was removed we discovered that risers are made of such poor quality pine, that even to paint them would be quite a challenge (they need to be patched / filled a lot). Another challenge was the paint color. I saw millions of pictures where staircases are finished with white paint. NOTHING in my house is white - neither moulding, nor ceilings. How would the combination white / stained oak staircase would look then?

Now, the finisher guy suggested that instead of painting the risers, stain them, even though they are pine, poor quality. He suggested doing the stain which is darker that threads stain. Has anyone ever done / seen that kind of combination - darker risers and (maybe) sides of the staircase, lighter threads?

Any input is greatly appreciated.
