Question for those of you with vinyl 'cedar shakes'

I will be having my house re-sided in the next year hopefully, and have been busy doing research for a while. I had pretty much decided on the vinyl siding that looks like cedar shakes, and I especially liked the Nailite product. I was visiting a friend yesterday who built a new house with Nailite siding, and I asked him his thoughts, good and bad on it. He likes it, except for one thing. He has a problem with bees getting under the siding and building nests. I am talking a lot of bees, not just one nest. I am wondering if this is a problem with the installation, or if this is a problem inherent in all vinyl cedar shake products because of the way they are put on the house? I really like the look of the cedar shakes, but I don't want lots of bees making their home under my siding. Thanks for any and all opinions.

Check some different brands. I've installed several and the panels lock together in such a way that insects would not find them inviting. Some brands have a temperature strip on them to aid in proper installation. $260-320/sq. are average prices if we're talking about the same product.

This would be an installion issue. The Nailtite product has no gaps where bees could get in unless the installer incorrectly placed/installed corners or window/door caps.

We used CertainTeed Impressions on our entire house. We get compliments on it all the time. In fact, people will go up and touch it, and then are amazed that it's not real shakes. Originally I was adamant that I did not want to use vinyl siding, but this product was so much better than anything else I looked at. I think what sets it apart from other vinyl shakes is that it appears seamless and the color is not a flat solid color. It has a bit of variation in the color like real cedar shakes, and it has some depth to the color and texture. I looked at Foundry vinyl shakes, and there was no comparison. The house is 5200 sq ft. As a comparison, the cost was $5,000 more than SmartSide. I didn't like the SmartSide because at the time they only had pastels, I thought it was way too shiny, and I didn't like all the seams. I think they've come out with many more attractive colors now. I've attached a picture of the back side of the garage. Not the best picture, but it is the best I have that shows the siding up close. I also agree with another poster that a more substantial trim around the windows makes a big difference.

Our lumberyard sells the Sierra Primed Shake Deep Groove in 20 board bundles at $168.30 per bundle, which breaks down to approx $8.40 per 8' board. We did price out the pre-finished in Maple too...$259.25 per bundle or approx $12.96 per board. Those prices are with a 15% discount that they very kindly offered since we're OBing. :o)

Thank you all for your comments. I am still so torn because the trim on the siding is rotting away, especially on the back of the house that faces north. Granted, this wood is probably 25-30 years old... I am concerned that it will begin to rot again, when new wood is replaced. Our window sills are rotted and even windows are rotted. I assume this is from rain and maybe it can't dry out enough on the sides because the houses are close together? I just hate to waste a huge chunk of money on painting/staining the existing siding and have it all go to waste. It is going to be $18k to do the hazmat removal of the lead peeling paint, replace rotted wood and then put new wood siding on the addition. It's not like this is a $5000 job... Another concern is that I just found out a lot of moisture gets into the walls and seeps out of the house? Is this true? From cooking and showering? So this can cause the paint to fail prematurely if there is no vapor barrier, which there wouldn't be, since the cedar is original to the house in 1918. I also have concerns about going over cedar with vinyl for the same reason. I am concerned that mold could build up under the new vapor barrier that they would put up... I remember one siding company said it is a bad idea to not remove the old siding and this may have been why. We have had issues with mold in various places like under the front porch, but once proper ventilation was installed, it went away. I just don't want to have everything sealed up to the point that no water vapor can escape and is encapsulated in between the layers of siding, causing mold growth. I'm probably over thinking it, but we are stuck in which ever direction we choose, and neither is "cheap".

Thanks for the info. My friends were actually able to slightly lift up the bottom edges of various pieces of the nailite shakes to show me where the bees were going, which seemed odd to me, but I don't know much about the installation procedures. I will be sure to cover this point when I start taking to contractors. Thanks!

The Nailite product has changed it's design. The siding you get now interlocks with the shingle under it and you can't pull out from the bottom.

Thanks Ron. That design design certainly makes sense, especially based on what I saw at my friend's house. I will have to keep Nailite on the list of possibilities when I start getting estimates.

We just resided our whole house with Cedarway. We looked at Nailite, Alcoa, Foundry and something else which escapes me at the moment. If it's installed correctly, I can't see how there'd be access for bees. I don't have close up shots of the panels looking up from the bottom but could get them for you tomorrow if that would help.

Thank you DLM2000. That is very kind of you to offer pictures of your panels, but I can take your word for it. I am just going to have to make sure I review this with whoever I hire to do the job to make sure that this is done properly and there is no access for bees.
