Blumotion like device for pocket doors?

We are in the process of reconfiguring a small NYC apartment. As space conservation is key for us, we are using pocket doors wherever we can to maximize useable floor space.

Although I am a long-time fan of pocket doors, I've never been to keen on the "bang" of the door sliding into the jamb or into the other door (for a two-door opening).

Anyone know if there is some sort of dampener similar to the blumotion drawer slides that could be used at the opening & closing sides of a pocket door?

What brand of hardware?
There are bumpers for use in the pocket to soften up the hammering.
If you have doubles are they linked?
There is usually enough drag from the linkage cables to eliminate most of the real slamming.

I'd try the regular blumotion pistons.

A full drawer of pots and pans may not be as heavy or as forcefully closed as a pocket door, it's still not exactly light. You might even use one at the top, one at the bottom.

If memory serves, there are models with round housings that are installed by simply drilling a hole. and slipping it in.

Would only cost a few bucks to try.

Not sure it's quite at the Kleenex level, but it's probably the most widespread. FWIW, I don't think Blum was the first with a soft close feature. Salice was the first I can remember having soft close. The came up with a piston that would be drilled into a cabinet carcass to keep doors from slaming. They didn't push it heavily and was circa 1999-2000. A few yeas later Blum introducd their Tandem drawer runners with a rather clunky reel cassett for soft close and "Blumotion" was born. They were able to push this feature with their considerable marketing clout. They also came out with a piston and a piggyback hinge device for door softclose. Might be interesting to some that Salice's new hinge is soft close but does not require an add on device. You cannot tell it from a normal hinge. Ikea's Blum sourced stuff is not as high a quality as the Blum reg. line. It is still good enough and a good value considering Ikea's product and pricing.

"I went to work in an office that had a pocket door that never worked right because someone had driven nails into it at some point and it was never the same after" (palimpsest) Yes. This happened to us when DH nailed the baseboard on the wall between the laundry and kitchen. The door came off track. When we renovate I will replace or remove. However, this was builder grade. On our extension I added three pocket doors. The one I had put in for the powder room is a solid core door, not thinner than most doors, as I wanted as much sound-dampening as possible with such a device. We used Johnson Hardware - not the home depot variety which runs $ 40 or so, but commercial grade. Look at the Johnson site under 1500 Commercial Grade and you will also find non-standard size frames (door max thickness 1 3/4"). Use a good carpenter.

Proper reframing for a pocket door in that area is not that hard, but not as simple as you seem to think. The header above the door must long enough to go all the way to the far end of both doors when retracted, so if the total width of the doors are 36", the header is 72", plus about 1-2". If that happens to be a load bearing wall, the header must be sized tall enough to span that width. The supports that come with the pocket door kit only serve to support the door jamb and keep the door aligned. They are too thin to be load bearing. Once you have framed the appropriate header and installed the pocket door kit, you will find there is a very shallow space to install any electrical. I'm not saying you can't fit it, but I don't think I've seen a standard wall receptacle box and switch that would work. If your electrical wiring is long enough you might be able to move the electrical box all the way off to the side, and then use a remote switch that mounts on the face of the drywall. If you have good pocket door hardware like Johnson they roll pretty easily and doors are not exactly lightweight.

It might work in the back of the pocket, but is not going to help much when closing the door.
It would have to stick pout of the door or the jamb to work and would look ugly poking out and catch things.
You might be able to hide one at the top of the door concealed by the trim, but remember that unlike drawers that can be made to self retract for the last few inches, or cabinet doors that are spring loaded to close, there is nothing moving a pocket door except you.
