grout color for basic white subway tile?

I'm doing a basic white subway tile backsplash. I know I want minimum spacing -- 1/16" -- but what color grout? Matching the tile or something a little darker? Natural maple cabinets with caramel glaze, exotic blue granite countertop....

Should the grout be the same color? Not necessarily. Will it look weird to use a darker gray on the floor and a lighter gray in the shower? Not at all. Any recommended colors for the shower and floor tiles along these lines? I've been getting stuff at Lowe's and they carry MAPEI Warm gray for the subway tile, and silver for the hex, if you lke a darker grey for the hex. Silver is actually a medium grey, but it'll appear alot darker with the white tile. Our bathroom isn't perfectly square. I think a colored grout seam that is uneven will be really obvious(that's my understanding where you would do any flubbing). Can you grout just the seam white? Can you skip grout and caulk it? Any suggestions here? Grout everything on the floor the same color. it'll actually show up more if you try doing what you suggested. It'll literally draw attention to it. What you want to dpo is make sure that you're square to the most obvious walls from the door. Especially with the hex, it won't be quite as obvious as you think, unless it's WAY out, and then nothing you can do will hide it, even using a blending color grout. One other thing-- that joint where the floor hits the walls should be caulked, but still caulk it with a caulking that matches the grout, both color AND texture. Does anyone know what the measure is for hex tile and subway? For subway, use unsanded, and for the hex, use sanded.

kegrant- I too would love to see photos and do post on what you finally decide. I too have simply white cabinets (ikea lidingo) and soapstone counters and am leaning towards white subways with white or possibly silvery gray grout (DH's preference) but everyone who looks at my kitchen says you want to add more white?!?! I am pretty confident I will love the look, but photos are always better. Best of luck to you in your search!

Lowes or Home Depot basic white subway tile?

The stock subways both carry are more of a creamy white. If you want bright white you can special order Dal arctic white from HD or whatever the american olean version of that color is from lowes. I did a backsplash for my parents for a rental with the off the shelf Interceramic from lowes (I think in some areas the Lowes stock AO, in others Interceramic) and it was almost exactly the same color. The Interceramic one might have been a tiny bit whiter but I can't remember The other difference was that the Interceramic one had separate lugs instead of a continuous lug at the edges and was slightly flatter than the Dal one. The quality and price were the same.

Don't get a dark / contrasting grout - it will show ever imperfection in the laying / grouting of the tile.

white grout gets dirty so fast and you'll never manage to keep it clean. gray grout looks classic and makes a vintage-looking tile like subways (especially set close together) look like they've been there forever. the darker grout colors also really accentuate the running bond pattern of the subways.

doing a primary color like blue just seems really risky--like it might look really dated and 80's-ish in a few years.

What about blue to match the counter?

I was going to say the same thing, but rather than trying to match it use a more subtle color, like Custom's Arctic Ice. With the white tile, it'll show up almost as a light sky blue-- just enough to bring out the pattern in the tile without being overwelming, and blue enough to tie it into the countertop.

I would go with a light grey. The thought of blue grout makes me cringe! JMHO Below is an old thread discussing spacing and grout color.

I don't want blue grout -- there are places for excitement and color, but tile grout ain't one of 'em. After reviewing the old thread (thank you! that was very helpful!), I conclude that a slightly darker grout helps separate the tiles, while same color grout creates a monotile look. I prefer the separate tiles look -- JMHO. Last question: Why grey instead of off-white/beige/ivory?
