Whole House Fan in a Split Level?

We have a 1964 California split level. The kids' rooms are on the third level, directly over the uninsulated garage, and their bedroom ceilings are vaulted with the original large, single pane trapezoid-shaped transom windows. We covered the windows with blackout cell shades (the lower operable windows also are single pane, and have shutters). The blackout shades and shutters helped keep some of the heat out of their rooms, but they still ROAST in there. We can't afford to insulate and replace all of the windows in the house just yet (the number and size of the windows in this place is staggering), so I was thinking about installing a whole house fan to help keep their rooms more comfortable. The other parts of the house tend to get too cold, rather than too hot.

Does any one know anything about whole house fans? What should I be looking for? Will it matter that their rooms are vaulted so that there is no attic crawl space over them?
