Soffit stress - need advice!
Comments (10)Hi everyone, Thanks for all of the advice and pictures! The pipe is quite large, so even without the warranty concerns, I don't think it would be feasible to place it in the top back of the cabinets (but believe me, we did think about that!) It is about 8" from the ceiling and 18" from the back wall. It's approximately 98" long - about 40" from the wall (or knee wall) or each side. Here's a picture of the design for the wall it will affect - the idea would be to keep the two end cabinets high (19" cabinet on the right, and 12" angled cabinet on the left) and lower the middle ones below the soffit. Although it is not shown in this picture, there is not a wall to the right of the cabinetry - there is a five foot wide archway into the next room. It's essentially a galley kitchen, so on the wall directly across from this, all of the cabinets could remain the full 39" hight. Of course, with the soffit, this would put them on a different level from the ones on this wall, but I hate to add back a useless soffit and sacrifice cabinet space for the sake of absolute symmetry! On the other hand, my husband's pretty concerned it'll look ridiculous with the varying heights......See MoreAnyone disguise/hide their soffits?
Comments (10)We did get rid of most of our soffits, but there was one part that we could not. Our KD's design includes cabinets to the ceiling w/crown molding. Where the plumbing still sticks out, she's hiding it inside the cabinets...yes, that will probably make the top shelf in those few cabinets not very useful (at least not for big objects), but most of the cabinets will be completely useful as it only affects 2 or 3 of the 6 upper cabinets on that wall. Others have "embraced" their soffits by decorating them. Someone else trimmed them to make them look like part of the cabinetry w/skins and crown molding (this was actually what our KD was going to do as well if she couldn't regain at least 3 or 4 inches from our soffit depth). Someone, I think, also made a shelf out of theirs. I don't know if any of these kitchens are in the Finished Kitchens Blog, but you might check. I suggest you also do a search for "soffit" and "soffits" since there have been some threads about this very topic. Use the search box on the bottom of the thread list page, not the top. Comments (5)If it's one inch, it may be worth lowering the entire ceiling. If it's three inches.......maybe just go with it and add a few more and make it look INTENTIONAL and box it in, decoratively. With no photo or drawing who could say?...See MoreSoffit removal advice
Comments (5)You'll have to rip into it to see. If you're lucky, the fixture is connected about where you'd like to put the pendant. If not, you may need to put a junction box (which would have to remain accessible (via a blank plate) to extend the wire to where you want to hang the pendant. But again, nothing tremendously arduous about this provided the soffit isn't hiding anything else....See Moreellendi
