How much should one spend on a new kitchen

I've been posting a lot of questions lately, and everyone has been so helpful. I realize that my question is somewhat subjective but was really trying to understand if there is a range or estimate, that is generally considered acceptable, based on the value of the home. Is there some generally accepted percentage, benchmark, etc.? I'm guessing this may vary from region to region. I live in NJ, kitchen is approx 16 x23.

If one's home value is $500k and its suggested you spend no more than 10% on a kitchen then that would suggest your total budget should be no more than $50k. That seems light considering the cabinets for our size kitchen are $25 - $35 (Lowes vs Brookhaven / Medallion). Add granite to cover 90 Sq ft of countertop and there's not much left for anything else.
