Comments (24)Simpson is in my opinion the best "off the shelf wood door" available. Jeldwen is a pretty good door it was better when Morgan owned them but they were dumbed down a little in my opinion when they were purchased by Jeldwen. As far as the Aurora F/G door this if I am not mistaken is the IWP doors which were at the time before Jeldwen purchased them shaky at best in my honest opinion and I have seen no evidence in any of the products Jeldwen produces that they are higher quality than under the prior manufacturers....See MoreFiberglass Door vs. Wood Door
Comments (7)Lots of factors to be included in the opinion. Things like which direction the door faces. North facing in winter get punished by cold/snow/etc. South facing doors get heat in summer, South facing fiberglas doors have been known to disfigure due to excess heat. Storm doors can help or hinder a doors longevity. Pros of wood doors: Lots of different natural colors. Lots of intricate details possible. Strength is usually high Cons of wood doors: Wood moves with weather(temp and humidity) Wood has to be finished(painting hides the grain. Clear finishes have to be periodically renewed) Wood doors are heavier. Wood door parts can separate due to weather. Real wood doors are much more expensive that clad doors. Fiberglas doors are simply wood cores covered in a fiberglas shell. They can have asimilar look to wood, but have to be painted/stained to have a grain pattern. Like vinyl siding having a texture like wood but the look of plastic. I have steel doors on my house---wood cores with a steel cover....See MoreHelp with the color of a pre-finished fiberglass door
Comments (1)Yes you can do that, but it may not be easy. The stain will bite better into an unfinished fiberglass surface so the color is easier to control. You will be putting the stain over a surface that is already stained and clear coated so there won't be any penetration...it will be like painting the stain over the existing finish, so there is a good chance it may not come out well. You can try and if it doesn't work out well, you can just wipe the stain off with a clean rag. If you decide to paint the door, again ideally you would want to start with an unfinished fiberglass door but if that is the route you decide to go you should sand the finish and apply a primer before topcoating....See MoreHelp with fiberglass door and stain
Comments (5)I don't want to assume, but I'm not sure if @WoW Washington caught the details of what you are trying to do. Textured fiberglass stains BEAUTIFULLY when professionally done. Most folks can't even tell its not wood without a very close examination. A talented and educated DIY'er could probably produce a decent looking finished product as well, albeit without the warranty or durability of the top coat that most door manufacturers use. That said, a smooth fiberglass door is not a good candidate for staining at all. If you have to go smooth, using a matching paint color will be your best bet. Nobody will mistake it for a stained unit, but it will maintain your color scheme....See Morelbny_rob
