Sources for Washable rugs for Kid's Rooms

We are pulling up all the carpets on our 2nd floor and installing hardwood floors next week. Hooray!

The carpet is from the previous owners and has seem better days. We're also hoping the hardwood helps our DD's asthma.

I would like to find some throw or area rugs for the bedrooms to soften things up (and help our feet in the cold New England winters.)

I cannot, though, find any cute rugs for my daughters' bedrooms. Their rooms are Pottery Barn-ish - one has light green and one has lilac walls - with white furniture and pink accessories. I've looked at JC Penney's and Target's web site, but can't A.) find lots of washable rugs that don't have latex backing -- not sure how you 'wash' those and B.) are cute colors.

Does anyone else have any other sources?

Our previous home was all hardwood- even the bedrooms. I got an adorable chenille braided rug in pretty pastel colors for dd's room. Big Mistake! It looked terrible after about a year. It was impossible to clean.
My suggestion would be to stay away from natural fibers if at all possible (wool, cotton, sisal, etc). I've had the best luck with rugs made with tightly woven olefin. They seen to resist stains the best and are easy to spot clean.
I'm not sure you'll find any truly "washable" (as in the machine) rugs other than bath mats.

We have hardwoods and I have oriental rugs in one of the kids' rooms and a jersey knit shag in my boys' room. I wash the shag in the washer and throw it over the fence to dry.

I'd say the nook will make a great guest bed and the play loft a wonderful study area. I think if you replace the bed as she gets older (or take off the top) the room will grow nicely with your daughter. Beautiful window seat and I really like your inspiration pictures. For your toddler son, how about a jungle and maps, kind of an Indiana Jones theme? You could play up the jungle aspect, but maybe use the maps with the gold (rather than blue) background...they look more vintage and play up the 'Indy' theme. Have fun! I would be very, very surprised if you'd find anything but a doormat for under $600 at Landry and Arcari! Try Boston Interiors, Pottery Barn, West Elm, keep trying Home Goods because inventory does change, possibly even Target or Home Depot? You won't find 12x12 at any of these stores, though. Most likely 8x10 or 9x12. I don't know where you live but there is a new World Market in Framingham, I think. Not even sure if they sell rugs but their prices are often pretty good on other things. Oh, and possibly Pier One?

My grandsons have old spindle beds that were painted white. They do not have a problem with that. As for anchoring the furniture to the wall, well, it really depends on the furniture. If it's new, lightweight with little wood actually in it, then yes, that is important. In my grandsons' room, they painted and re-used furniture that was old when my in-laws bought it in 1948 for their summer house - heavy as lead! Same for the bookcase - it would take a 200 lb man trying to climb on it to tip it over and it would hold him! I don't like double beds in children's rooms. My children (and two of my grandchildren) have sleepovers all the time and twin beds are so much easier then. If you can, buy extra long twins like they have in college dorms (bedding is readily available for such). My grandsons share a room and are lucky that it is quite large (about 18x18). When I replaced the sleep sofa in my library (purchased at Bloomingdales in 1966 for our first apt), it went to their room, so now friends who are sleeping over can sleep in a bed instead of on the floor. Getting that heavy sucker up the stairs was a major challenge!

Interesting, California, I just assumed "washable" meant "machine washable", but I guess it sometimes just means spot-cleaning or steam cleaning is allowed. I will looked at the olefin.

Elizgonz, I've never seen those jersey rugs - they are so just and probably comfortable to play on. I looked quickly at the site, but will go back on to spend more time.

Also, thanks, Brutuses, for the info about JC Penney. I've bought from them before, but just didn't see what I was looking for yet. Maybe I'll search deeper.
