no! of course not! i had one in my old house and loved the way it looked. the only reason i'm having mine done in wood now is because it's a new house and since i like the look of a custom wood hood as well, i'm going to switch.
contrary to what some may say, stainless isn't going out of style any time soon. before deciding to build i looked at plenty of houses to buy. one that sticks out in my mind was a home built in the '20s it had a large gas range in it and even though i don't know if it was original to the house, it was definitely not new. it looked right at home. stainless is classic. no worries, just go with your gut. good luck and please post pics when you're done!

Many many people have done metal hoods of numerous finishes. Each style looks great for the nature of the kitchen they go with. Get what you want for sure!

rdas...that's funny, when I was looking every inspiration photo I found had a stainless hood! My husband really liked the wood hoods, so we opted for that, but I think the stainless ones are beautiful. Look at the Somethings Gotta Give kitchen...it has a stainless hood and that is one of my favorite inspiration kitchens for sure! I don' think they are out of fashion at all!

I'd go with a stainless hood personally in your situation. It definitely is NOT out of style. In fact, a lot of people ruin their kitchen by going with a wood hood. It makes it monotanous in a lot of cases.

When checking out a hood like at the Vent-a-Hood line. There are none better, hands down.

I have to respectfully disagree with the "guru." I know 2 people who have Vent-a-Hoods who regret buying them because they're so loud. There have also been complaints about them being loud on the appliance forum. After reading lots of positive reviews on Modern-Aire hoods, that's what I chose.

I think you are right....a stainless hood in the center of that long wall will break things up nicely. My own personal opinion....hoods are really fancy and seem to only fit in when the cabinets are very ornate. With a more simple style such as your shaker doors, I think a hood might look over done. Stainless hoods aren't going out of style any time soon.

I don't know anything about modern aire, but I can recommend the Broan Rangemaster Elite. I have the 36" hood with a remote 900 cfm motor. When it's running wide open I can hear it, but if I am just pulling out bacon grease smoke or something like that, running it on high is never necessary. I barely turn it on and it pulls everything out. The motor is mounted on my roof so it is very quiet. I love it! And a neat feature it has is warming lights at the back edge of it. I put up a stainless shelf and can use the warming lights to keep a plate warm and rise dough.

I think you should go with a custom built in hood.
IMHO, I do love the Stainless Steel but since your
cabinets are a shaker style a built in hood would tie
it all together. And the nice thing is if you don't
like it years from now or decide to change your
style to modern/shaker you could buy a stainless hood
easily. The custom built hood is going to look
awesome with your soapstone counters.

Buying the built in now is going to be far cheaper
than wanting it a year after the kitchen is done.
As for noise issues. I think the custom shaker style
hood could go over any venting to make it more quiet.

We have the kitchen you're describing (cream shaker cabs, black counters, stainless steel hood). I love it. It will probably go "out of style" in the next 5 years or so, but we picked it because we love it, and because how can you forecast what will be in style in 2 or 5 or 10 years? I'll put in a plug for the GE Profile hood we have - it's powerful and absolutely silent.

I can't imagine stainless hoods going completely out of style. I love the simplicity of ours and I think having a similar material helps highlight the range. We have upper cabinets flanking our hood that never get greasy at all but the outside of our hood does get scummy and I'm thankful that it's easy to clean.

They have been making metal or stainless hoods since they started making hoods, so I wouldnt worry about their fashionability.

I think a better term is in of/out of "fashion" because style can be timeless, while fashion can be fleeting.

While a stainless hood may not be the "hottest, newest" it will never be "dated" either. They have been a constant for a long time.

stainless hoods are still "hot" don't worry...

I was going to say that since I have one, they probably are out. LOL

I have white perimeter cabinets with white marble counters and a white subway backsplash (with a color liner). I have a stainless rangetop and I wanted a functional, working, comfortable old kitchen feel. To me the stainless is less fussy and more about defining the kitchen as a work space. I'm not trying to make it look like my living room, so that's what I wanted. I did toy with a simpler wood hood, but I came back to stainless.

Either can be classic -- get what makes you happy.

I have shaker cabs and a stainless hood - I wanted a slightly more modern take on a traditional white kitchen. HTH!!

lagrant- I love your kitchen! I looked for it in the finished kitchens blog but didn't find it. Do you have a floor plan you can share and/or a link to more pics? My kitchen is of similiar dimensions,I love your island and would like to see if it fits in my space.

Zelmar...what is the size of your hood? Is it 6" wider than your range and at least 24" deep? I was wondering b/c you mentioned that the outside gets scummy... (I file all this info away in the "Kitchens" part of my brain!)

lagrant- I am interested in the total L x W of your kitchen and the size of your island. Also, how much space did you leave between the perimeter cabinets and the island?
