My new hardware -- how cheap is too cheap?

So, the hardware I fell in love with -- Alno Fiore -- was almost $20 for a 4" pull. (Had to look that up.) I was going to steel myself and do it when I found some dirt cheap on Overstock.com. An off brand which only they seem to sell. Stone Mill? Satin nickel like my faucets, not brass as in my dreams. But the 5" pull was $ $3.60. Yes. $3.60. Picture below, with the $2.60 knob that I matched from another Stone Mill suite.

So I'm loving the bargain of the thing. And I love the look. The stuff lays as heavy in the hand as any high end hardware I looked at. The finish looks flawless. So what could go wrong here? How can the same functional thing -- a largish-sized cabinet pull -- vary in price so widely?

Lucky you to find such a nice pull for such a great price. I wouldn't worry about what could go wrong. My pulls cost about the same price per inch as yours. Mine were 10 inch pulls for $7.20. They have been installed for about 18 month now and look the same as the day they were installed. I don't anticipate any issues with mine and I'm sure you won't have any with yours.
I love the deals that I have found on Overstock. Congratulations on being a savvy shopper.

The chunk comes from it being sitting around on the outside. If I managed to acquire it when they first deliver it, there are few chunks and definitely weight a lot less than soil. However, the stuff get rained on and becomes chunky. However, even at its best, it isn't as good as the bag of mushroom compost I got, that was fine grain. However, I suspect it had more soluble salt than I would have like. I guess with bag stuff, I wonder if they add fillers. I recall that someone tested a bagged compost once and discovered that it contain less organic material than his soil. I wish consumer reports or some gardening magazine would do an analysis of the bagged stuff so I know what to buy. I think I know to avoid certain products. There was another brand of mushroom compost that smell strongly of ammonia, that was probably unfinished... Paul

Something bad happened that actually was a very, very good thing... After following breiaj's instructions to the letter, two of the floor tiles in the bathroom popped up a couple of days later and wouldn't stay stuck. When I pulled them up the rest of the way, I found a leak! If it hadn't been for those tiles unsticking, we wouldn't have found that leak until it did a LOT more damage - like made a big ole mess of the kitchen ceiling. So here's one way in which vinyl tile might actually be BETTER than sheet! A few notes WRT breiaj's instructions... I admit to dropping back to $3.99 paintbrushes because they became unworkable so quickly - the glue would start to dry up in the bristles while we were working and it would become more like a paddle than a brush! We didn't have any problems with bristle loss. 2" flat-ended paintbrushes were just the right size, a wider brush seemed like it would save time but was really more awkward to work with, especially with cut pieces. Don't bother wearing rubber gloves in hopes of keeping your hands clean, they stick to the tile's adhesive and to the adhesive you're spreading on and just generally irritate the crap out of you. :-) The adhesive - Armstrong's anyway - is kind of hard on your hands though, and contrary to the label does not wash off with soap and water! We ended up using a "painter's wipes" product we had on hand to clean up our hands about every hour because we would get too sticky to work effectively, and our fingertips were pretty raw and sore afterward. Even though it costs a bit more it's a lot easier to work with the smaller containers of adhesive using this brush-on method, because the bucket gunks up something awful. If you're laying more than about 100 square feet, seriously consider coughing up for the vinyl tile cutter (homedepot.com has one for about $50, or you can rent a superduper heavy-duty one for about the same for a weekend)... scoring and snapping with a utility knife sucks after a while, it's slow and hard on your hands. Make sure you have a comfortable utility knife no matter what though, and a LOT of blades. Stanley makes a really nice knife in their FatMax line, with a rubber-cushioned handle. A jamb or undercut saw ($15) makes dealing with those door jambs SO much easier than trying to cut the tile around them! We removed the baseboards; we were going to replace them with vinyl cove but the damn stuff just would not cooperate so we patched the baseboards with wood filler galore and put them back, and it looked SO much neater than butting the tiles up to the baseboards. deeje, I've checked around with several manufacturers of vinyl tile and the biggest deal WRT moisture is not to slop around too much water when you mop - contrary to popular belief, you don't need a gallon bucket full of near-boiling water and some vile chemical to get a floor clean! Try a well-squeezed-out sponge or terrycloth/microfiber mop instead of a sopping string or rag mop instead. Those microfiber cleaning cloths fit on Swiffer handles really well, if like me you are too cheap to buy the Swiffer cloths. :-) ctaylors6, the instructions in the Cryntel box agree with the Lowes guy - wash well-secured vinyl very well, rinse well, allow to dry thoroughly. I'd use something like TSP that would destroy any gloss on the existing floor. Our vinyl was trashed so we couldn't leave it, so I can't speak to the adhesive method on top of vinyl. We still haven't gotten the kitchen floor laid down yet. We had to tear out some of the subfloor and replace it, and then do a lot of leveling and sanding on the rest, got diverted with a day of electrical work, and to top it all off DH has been sick as a dog. :-( Cross your fingers for this weekend!

I went on a whirlwind shopping trip last night (Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot, Sams and Target). I had a feeling that I wasn't going to find anything that fit my criteria and budget better than this set and I was right. So I bought it last night an DH put it together this morning. I changed up the cushions and I really couldn't be happier. I think it looks great and may not of done it if I hadn't received all the positive responses. Thanks to everyone! BTW Oceanna, my pups are Boxers and they love to hear how pretty they are! They are incredibly sweet but love to bark at strangers so they do serve as my security detail very well! Here's a pic of my little dining set in it's new home:

I usually just use a 6x9 envelope - not padded. What about checking at a dollar store? They often sell greeting card envelopes that are left over - and they are usually larger - packs of about 25 bundled together. I fold my blocks and wrap them in plastic wrap or a baggie before putting them in the envelope. I think they have always arrived safely. Sue

I have the same 5" handles as the ones you pictured (mine are ORB) and love them, they look great and 'feel' very nice and heavy. My question is how can a $3.60 pull cost $20.00? You did good!

Am I the only one wondering how much Bowyer paid for hers? LOL

Good score on the handles MizLiz! I've found a super deal on Moen faucets on eBay, unfortunately seller is away on holidays, and I need to find out if shipping to Canada will eat away drastically at my savings (and DH wants them in his hands to get started on plumbing shower).

Bowyer is a 'he!' haha!!

Mine were in the $4.00 range. You can spend a whole lot more, but I couldn't justify the expense when these look great, and we have a lot of them. If I ever want to change or upgrade (ie.--spend more) they are a standard 5" spread so that shouldn't be a problem. In the meantime, I love these and see no reason to change.

Raehelen...do you live close to the border? If so look into Kinek, you can ship stuff there and pay $ (5 or 8 dollars) to pick up a package, but at least you can take advantage of inexpensive postage in the states and no hst or duty. Not all retailers let you ship with a cdn credit card, but most do especially if you call them and phone order. It has worked well for me.

I think it is one of things that only you will know. No one else would know the difference and if you like them, use the money you saved else where.

Bowyer, my thoughts exactly. If they tarnish or if I can't get over the yearning for brass, I can replace them later with limited guilt at that price. If I'd paid $20, the undertaker would have been screwing those puppies off and bolting them to my casket for reuse.

Lazygardens, good tip. I think I will have about 5 extra of all three pieces. If I don't, I'll for sure order more.

Hey, pat me on the back again! When I was shopping for those at Overstock, they invited me to join some sort of frequent diner program. Since one of our regular joints was on the list, I did it and they sent me (unannounced) a 15% thank-you coupon. So I actually got 15% off all that hardware. I mention this in case anyone is budget shopping for hardware.

Those piece are Overstock's Stone Mill Tudor pattern (pull) also available in oiled bronze and weathered nickel. And Stone Mill Sienna knob, same finishes. Interestingly, it comes in packs of 5, 10, and 25, but the 5-packs are cheaper per piece. I have learned to always do the math on Overstock because they price things oddly.

Can y'all tell I'm struggling to make up for that expensive Cambria and my frou-frou china cabinet? Gonna take more than cheap hardware to do it, tho . . .

My hardware is by Stone Mill too, bought thru overstock. My kitchen is 1 yr old, but for sure they look as good as the day they were installed. They are made solid are heavier than I expected, I never regretted buying them.... Hope you enjoy your purchase as much as I do.
