Help: Question about Where to End Backsplash Tile
Comments (18)I wanted to include a few photos. I forgot to say that I think my situation may be a bit more complicated because I also have the 4" soapstone backsplash. Moreover, how far beyond the upper cabinets that the soapstone countertop sticks out varies by about 1/2" on the two sides of the stove wall. So if I align the tile with the upper cabinets (as I most likely will), it will still look a tad uneven between the two ends. (Hope this makes sense). Here's the one end of this wall with tile aligned with upper cabinets: And here's the other end, where the soapstone would stick out a tad farther. Let me know what you think....See MoreVertical Backsplash? A Backsplash Regret?
Comments (28)I can see why it might be advisable to remove the left/rt portions of tile, but I would be inclined to wait until ithe kitchen is completed before deciding. If, as your gut tells you, it "needs" to come down, nothing is really lost except a little more time with it up. Perhaps knowing you are not "locked-in" or committed to it, will help give the perspective to view it more objectively while deciding for sure. This way you will not only have the chance to see it with everything else in place, but you will also have the opportunity to get used to it, before deciding if you truly dislike it, or just haven't gotten used to it being there. As subtle (in color) as our tile is, after months of looking at white painted Sheetrock, it still looked "different" and stood out when we looked at our kitchen. Once we became accustomed to it, we couldn't imagine our walls without it. That's how I am with many things--after living with a blank wall or empty space for any period of time, even a long awaited piece of furniture or decor item jumps out at me, and almost seems like too much, until I get used to the vacant space being filled. Thanks for the compliments on our backsplash Laura and andreak100! It's the Opera Glass tile from Artistic Tile (Stilatto pattern) in Wolfgang White. It does read greenish-blue(-grey) in certain lights or times of day. We had to think about that one while deciding if we wanted to use it, and obviously decided to go for it! Good luck Laura! Honestly, whatever you decide will look terrific!...See MoreHelp! Need Advice about Backsplash Tile
Comments (5)Thanks so much for your feedback! BeanPiele, I could probably afford the expensive stuff ($60-77/sf), but I have a modest house that had never been updated before I moved in. I want the dream kitchen, but there are still a lot of projects to tackle in the future and, while I plan to be here for a number of years, a question about return of investment. EAM44, Fireclay seems like a fab company - they're the only ones that offered free(!) samples. And you have a very good point about the savings. I've got ~35 sf to cover, not huge, I suppose, but it all adds up. I'm realizing that I think I need to adjust my expectations to better plan for future projects. Any thoughts about color, quality and value between Fireclay, Heath, Ann Sacks and, say, Home Depot?...See MoreHelp please! Question about tile backsplash
Comments (14)I'm back, with my kitchen pretty far along now, but I still have a question about the tile! Originally I had thought I was going to use white subway tile, but I found this beautiful matte 3x3 gray ceramic tile at the Heath Ceramics factory for a very good discount, and couldn't say no. My cabinets are all in, the range hood is up, I have mounted 2 wooden shelves to the right of the hood. The plan is to tile everything under the upper cabs, filling the wall space. The tile will go up to the bottom of the range hood. I'm ending the tile horizontally at the outer edge of the open shelving. Now my big question is: do I end the tile vertically at the bottom shelf , i.e.- in line with bottom of upper cabs, or tile up to the bottom of the upper shelf, i.e.- in line with the hood? Any advice or opinions much appreciated! I'm attaching some pictures, very messy as the tiling is in progress. The tiles appear darker in the photos than they do in real life, and especially in daylight, which my kitchen gets a lot of. The actual shelves are not up right now, just the brackets. I'm also attaching a photo of the materials/colors used in the kitchen: white, wood, carrara marble, gray ceramic....See Moremuskokascp
