mixing walnut wood grain directions
Comments (1)OK, the entire island and all the cabinets are walnut? The floating base cab should definitely be horizontal (parallel to floor). The wall cabs surrounding the ovens might look better vertically, but may look OK depending on the style of doors (and how good your cabinetmaker is - a tall door with horizontal grain may be difficult to pull off). This is how I automatically see the island: The actual cabinets (sink, cooktop bases) are horizontal grain (seen from fridge). Under the countertop, the backs of those cabs should also be horizontal (only seen from a distance). The island sides / top should "wrap" in one direction. The sides from floor to countertopo should be VERTICAL, and the countertop grain should go across the LENGTH from one side to the next, and the other side is also vertical. That is how a waterfall table / island is normally constructed, and to make the sides horizontal loses the beauty of the wood and the waterfall effect of the piece. Is this all solid walnut or veneers? A veneered waterfall like that would always be one continuous piece with the grain running in one direction - from the floor up all along the top and down the other side to the floor. If you are having these custom made there is absolutely no reason the grains cannot run in the correct direction for each piece. I think the tall built-in will look better with vertical grain, especially because the floating cabinet on the other wall will really pop with the horizontal grain then....See MoreBest wood species for grain matching fake out

Comments (52)You've got some nice wood pieces. Did your father make most all of them? Regarding the paint color. I always feel paint color should be decided once everything is selected. I'm guessing that the Builder has a couple of paint selections that were chosen to go with the finishes that are being offered so if I were you at this point I would make notes as you are doing but wait to see what you select for the other finishes and then see if the Builder's paint colors will work for you. If none of them do, at that point you can determine if you are going to "up-grade" (he may not even offer the opportunity for you to stray from the color choices) or just paint the walls a non-descriptive color and have them painted later with your own painter. Comments (9)Grain should run vertical on cabinet doors. When cabinet doors are made from solid wood the boards are joined vertically, as engineered products are meant to simulate wood, they too should run vertical. Slab doors can be specified to have horizontal grain flow, when the purpose is to have the grain flow across all cabinets. The question becomes is non-standard actionable in this situation and I honestly don't know. It is strange enough that I expect it is, but I have no idea how they will respond. ETA: The same goes for drawers only horizontal....See Moredoonie
