How do I get rid of Groundhog?

I've tried the cat trap and it didn't work. He has hands like a raccoon and just reached over the lever that closed the trap, picked it up and ate it. I watched him do it one time and he very daintly reached in there for the apple. Fred is now eating my nasturtiums and bean plants and I'm thinking of more deadly means now, jk...well, kinda.

Anyone got any ideas?

We have a problem with moles Kathleen....we have tried all the humane things the un humane things and still over run with them...ahhh country life at it's finest LOL...the dogs take care of alot of them....but the stinking cabbage eating things....we are now down to 2 cabbage heads of last night haven't checked today.....Stacy

I better not post my solution!

I could send Harry and Sam over, but a .410 might be better solution.

There are some ways to control them and sometimes they just need thinned out.

I LOVE animals, but I'm a realist, too. I also eat meat, but I don't think I could eat a groundhog. Harry could.

I am sorry you take offense summer fashion -- I was just trying to point out that there are other places for this rare rose. As the grower of over 600 roses, many of which are rare, I try to do my part to keep some of these in commerce, and have given cuttings to many different growers. My initial question was simply directed at trying to figure out if I had the rose that was supposedly "the last one," and if I did have it, to get it out there to some distributers. FYI -- Cliff is the proprieter of Eurodesert Roses and he specializes in distributing rare roses. And to answer your question about Gregg -- no I do not think he would necessarily have driven down and gotten another one -- he has his hands full keeping all the roses already in his 4000 rose collection. I would be shocked if he were adding more, even if he happens to lose one. As for you complaint about "hi-jacking", I am sorry that you posted your Kudzu question on the rose board. Maybe you should have put it on the appropriate forum in the first place, rather than worrying about someone changing the subject of your post back to the subject of the board. Fire ants make mounds and not holes. The mounds start out small and become larger as the colony population increases. These mounds look rather innocent until you disturb them, and ALL of the ants boil out of the mound all at once. Again, there is never a discernible hole. I never worry about ants in my yard and garden, other than fire ants. Fire ants can be a problem for humans, pets, bird nests, beneficial insect eggs and larvae, and such.

Vaherbmom THANK YOU!! meldy_nva Pine-Sol! The smell is overpowering but makes so much sense!! I was going to run a hose about 10’ into their hole and funnel a quart of ammonia followed by a quart of bleach. Bend the hose into the hole and cover it with dirt but the exhaust is so much cleaner:) The University uses dry ice at the same time on multiple holes covered with A LOT of wet dirt and then they hold. They standby because the students would remove the dry ice (the non home owners felt it to be cruel) My issue is living between immigrants that believe animals have a place in the world. They do! But not when they damage your property! So she continued to feed them by dumping her table scraps and compost in the alley behind our houses. She felt differently when her yard was excavated for a sewerline break. The workers explained that the absence of support structures caused it to snap. I have used conibear traps in the attic for squirrels, just be careful to do so when there is no chance youll be leaving behind unfed helpless babies. For folks that have groundhogs in open fields contact your local Jack Russell Terrier club. They might have to dig a hole or two to get the dogs out but GO TO GROUND is what JRTs were bred to do. My 16lb baby caught the 30lb animal she was feeding and I left it for her to bury so she could see what she created. The common yellow oxalis we have here has tiny "bulbules" (sp?), which lurk 12 -18 inches under the ground. You can easily pull up the plants, of course, but those tiny bulb things stay under the soil, and up it comes again. I once had a gardener who decided to eradicate it from a flower bed which is about 12 feet long and 6 feet wide. He actually dug up the top 2 feet of soil, and sifted it by hand to get all of the tiny bulbs out. That worked for the first year, but by 2-3 years after he did that, back the oxalis came. So, being lazy, what I do is just admire it in the Spring, except where it is trying to smother other plants. Then just pull it out around those plants. By late Spring here it has died down, and I pretend it is gone. Of course, it comes up again the next Spring. It is one of our first blooming plants to bloom (starts Jan/Feb), so I just regard it as such and let it be mostly. Do you have a fence around your garden? If so, make sure it's high enough and also put something around the bottom of it because they will dig under...And I'm sure there's something, a spray or something you can get at Home Depot or one of those places...We've had our share in the past and they are very, very smart critters...Unfortunately, my DH had to use other measures to get rid of them....Right now, we're having deer problems and they sure do love beans and the leaves on my sunflowers...They just stand outside the fence and lean in and have a feast...I've now stretched old lace curtains from the top of the fence and over the beans and so far, so good.....
I love to see all those wild critters but not when they are helping themselves to the garden....

Yes, there is a fence around my entire backyard. I came home from work last week and saw him outside the fence. When he heard my car pull up he ran back under the gate, where the neighbor's dogs had dug under it before.

Luther would like to get ahold of him too, Caroline, but Fred is faster.

We use a havahart trap baited with a wedge of cabbage slathered with peanut butter. this havahart only opens one side.

I just throw the cabbage to the back side of the trap that doesn't open. Animals have to cross the trip to get to the food and that's how they get caught.

Well, after catching a 'coon and having him relocated, we re-set the trap once again baited with cabbage/peanut butter and caught 'chuckie'. Woodchuck went into witness protection and was relocated miles from our house......

week later we had not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4 not 5, but 6, yeah 6 little woodchucks walking around our backyard.

Have only seen 2 lately. When these get bigger, we will relocate them. Sigh. It never ends.

Mjny, that's what I used. Only Fred must be smarter than the average groundhog because he doesn't ever trip the trap.

kathsgrdn, it sounds like maybe you're using the wrong size trap if he can reach in and get the apple without tripping it. Groundhogs are so darn big. He probably needs a bigger size. I know they're not cheap but neither is your sanity. Smiles.

This is the one we use - xtra lg - I think we got it from Tractor Supply. With all the critters we've caught and relocated, it was well worth the price.

We used the Havahart last year and relocated 2 groundhogs. Unfortunately we still have at least 2 more that need to go. I haven't tried the cabbage and peanut butter but I will tomorrow. They've been tunneling underneath my deck and my shed I'm afraid my dog will have a nasty encounter with one.

You could call your local pest control & let them come set a few of their cages around your home & call them for removal, if & when it gets trapped.
On the lighter side of the subject? Once he's trapped? Ship his butt back to Punxatawney!!!

Groundhogs can be live trapped. If you don't have a live trap, you may be able to borrow one from animal control or your local humane society. Earlier this year may have been a bad time to trap a mother G-hog. If she was nursing, it would mean starvation of the young.

Once trapped, you can transport the animal to another location for release. This usually not a problem in low populated rural areas but is a problem in urban setting. You do not want to 'dump your problem' in some else's yard. Also, think environment. It should be conducive to survival for the animal. It will need terrain in which it can burrow and have available a variety of green stuff to eat. Old gravel pits and high banks of streams are suggested.

Sweet pea vines are desert to a groundhog. Sweep pea and inmature carrots are successful baits.
