I got about half a dozen of these last August, despaired of their lives, but this spring they've all grown to about 22" & have bloomed like crazy.

You sound like me I bought irises based on the names for a long time. Now I just buy them . I need to do a new count. I redid and get rid of a bunch last year, but my last count was over 600 different named varieties of course that includes my LAs and all of my bearded .from the SDBs to the Tbs.

Sylvia, I haven't heard of Zebrina hollyhocks in ages. I used to grow them from seed. Loved them, but forgot about them over the years.

Viburnum Dentatum (Chicago Lustre). This was in a 2 gallon pot in 1997. Holy smokes! I have pruned it back several times. It is about 8' tall and about that much wide. And, it stinks.

I can post a few from my atrium, it's too hot to go outside to the garden.
My stargazer lilies are blooming and the plants are loaded with blooms. The limbs are drooping from the weight.

This beautiful blue flowered plant is the new home to a family of little birds that are furiously building a nest down inside. I hope no one drowns when I water but if the rain has not done them in I guess they are OK.

I had no idea what the name was...I looked and looked online. I got it down to a couple of names and decided that "Birthday Girl" is the name of the iris. The gal who gave it to me had no idea that flowers have names!

Its really not that hot here. I believe we are zone 6b or 7a, and are only a couple of weeks ahead of you. Our iris peaked about 2 weeks ago, but even this weekend there were still a couple of flowers left.

The cactus were just so much more dramatically beautiful at the moment. They are very hardy, even though several other plants had problems with this extra long, extra cold, extra snowy winter, the cactus came through like a champ. I've also broken some of the lobes off in the past while raking debris from a different portion of the garden, and later found the lobe had taken root and was thriving next to the leaf pile.

First would be Heuchera Cherries Jubilee. Hummers love it.

BlueJIris.com has a neat online iris catalog searchable by color, type, name, etc. Unfortunately, Birthday Girl is not on their list, but I Googled it and came up with these pictures. Jim, while your beautiful iris has plenty of ruffles and some lace, it seems to me the ones in the photos are more heavily laced. I'd be interested to see what Littlebit thinks.

Stout Gardens has a wonderful site, organized and easy to work through. The have an extensive list of iris.

Williamson Farm Flowers also lists many iris; however their site is not very user friendly. Only listed by alpha, not by color or season or height.

Since you brought it up.. I dont think its Birthday Girl either.The beards look different to me, Yours looks like its tipped with white not to mention the form itself is off. But its so hard to tell from a picture. The best way to find out is to buy BG from a grower and grow them side by side.

Littlebit, I can see why you stopped looking for meaningful names. I'm sure I couldn't come up with 600 of them! That is a fabulous collection. What a grand sight they must be. And I love the scent of iris too.

Are you familiar with a perfume by Prada called Infusion d'Iris? I looked for it at Macy's to check it out, but that store doesn't carry it. I may order a miniscule amount in one of those roller pens just to see what it's like.

To me a "garden" is vegetables. Flowers are a "flower bed". I have got irises, tons and tons of Irises, in my flower bed.

Angelaid, the English seem to refer to their entire yard as their garden; I guess it depends on where you come from. Please post some iris pics!

My Siberian iris and clematis are all finished. I have a dozen clems in my postage stamp size yard. My Easter lilies are in full bloom and lovely. I usually don't cut them, but since we were expecting storms (which never came) I cut a bunch for the kitchen table. One stem had ten flowers on it. I've never seen one with that many. My kitchen smells heavenly!

Oh yes, and the everlasting spider wort is blooming. Murray's mom, what do you do to control it? It's so invasive here, even coming up in the middle of what I lovingly call my 'lawn'. It's the one thing I never manage to get rid of. It is pretty, I'll admit.

Alisande, I'm glad you started this thread because I've been so busy that I haven't walked around to see what's in bloom! Just took a quick tour with my ipad.... things are at least 2 weeks later than normal here, and the scent is amazing because I've got all my lilacs, lily of the valley, Dames Rocket, scented bearded iris, etc., all in bloom now.

Some French lilacs that a friend gave me years ago:

Alpine strawberries and a clump of Centaurea montana, which smells like grape bubblegum :)

Some bearded iris, Dames Rocket (Hesperis), and my big rhododendron at the back, along with lily of the valley and fading forget-me-nots, of course. The rhodo got hit hard this winter, so I'm shocked that it's blooming at all!

And the scent from the Dictamnus (gas plant) is amazing... to me it's citrus-scented:

My yarrow is about out of control. I really hate to toss it. I divide, then divide, then divide. I'm running out of people to give it to!

I'm having a rare day where I'm able to get some work done in the gardens and just noticed my first peony opening. :)

PartyMusic, thank you for the tour! I used to have Centaurea Montana until I got tired of something sitting it in. At least that's how it always looked just as it started to bloom. I can practically smell that peony. And I'm not familiar with Gas Plant--so pretty!

Despite it's invasive quality, I love Hesperis so much that I named my blog after it.

What lovely irises! Mine won't be blooming until 3 to 4 weeks more. What is in bloom right now is 'Dame's Rockets". I have a few that have invaded my yard. In my neighborhood, no one cultivates Dame's Rockets and they are considered a 'wild flower", however, some folks considers these as weeds. As I undersand it, these plants are not native wild flowers, but escapes from gardens from long ago and have gone feral, and have managed to propagate across the countryside. They are not highly competitive and are easily controlled by mowing. If you want some, let a few grow to maturity each year; If you don't want them, mow them down. After a couple of seasons of cutting, they will be gone.

At this time of the year, I can find patches of them along hiking/biking trails, and I have a few in my backyard.

JemDandy, we call them Sweet Rocket here, but the correct name, as you probably know, is Hesperis. Party Music and I mentioned it above. It's a favorite of mine, and I love your picture!

I planted it from seed 30+ years ago. I bought the seed from Park's, which used to offer an extensive catalog. Much later, I learned how invasive it can be. Now it's all over my large property, and I'm mostly happy to have it.

Alisande, I did buy this rose at Armstrong Garden Centers here in California. The Armstrong people told me that the rose was developed in honor of their Chief Financial Officer at the time. Joshua was his son.

Don't know if that part is true, but it touched my heart.

It was ploughed a while ago, it's been raining fairly frequently, so just got cultivated on Monday and I began working toward seeding after that.

Maxmom, I started with just one plant. It has expanded, though I have had it probably 6 or 7 years. One little plant somehow made it's way to the side of the house now.

I just love the color and how the plant behaves.

There sure are a lot of beautiful flowers in everyone's yards.
