danby marble question for gw folks

I looked @ slabs, trying again to find "the one" for the counter. Found an Olympian Danby that I liked, however noticed something I have not seen in other slabs.-small, wavy, horizontal lines, a bit whiter than the background. These look like small stress lines (compression, maybe?), which I understand may be characteristic of this series of slabs. However, I kept running my hand over it to feel the cracks/fissures. I cannot feel them AT ALL, but I wonder if this is a reason others would reject this slab. I don't want to talk myself into it & have others see it & think I got a bad piece of stone. These are not deep cracks, by any means, but noticeable. WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Thanks for your help!

If they are not cracks, they are probably just whiter lines. My Alabama White has those.

My guess is the white lines are not a problem, however not all Danby slabs have them, so my advise would be -- search on! Do not settle if you are not completely comfortable with the slab and do not try to convince yourself that something is ok if you have a gut feeling that it is not. There are a ton (literally!) of slabs out there. It is worth your time and effort to wait until you find what you want. Good luck! Lilly

Absolutely! The place is called Rugo. If I look around I can probably find the card of the guy we dealt with there, whose name was Gus. As I recall, they either had no weekend hours or they were very limited, but we were able to call and set up evening hours during the week to come look at the stone. They were very nice to deal with, and had an incredible selection of all different types of marble. If I ever figure out how to post pictures, I could show you some. They had slabs outdoors, in a warehouse, and I think there was another warehouse nearby as well. I found it so refreshing because usually we would go to places that had 999 slabs of granite and 1 slab of marble to choose from. This one had almost all marble. The only other stone I remember seeing there was soapstone. Having said all this, unfortunately I could not find the white carrara I wanted there. What they had was more spotted than veined. It looked like a dalmation to me! I ended up finding the right slabs elsewhere, but was kind of sorry I couldn't find it at the place that loved marble so much. It was also the only place I ever went that did not try to tell us we shouldn't use marble in the kitchen :) I think they also do marble work on some of the monuments and public buildings in DC. Anyway, good luck. If Rugo doesn't work for you, I'll be happy to share with you the places we went in Maryland too.

Have been scarce on here lately as we are STILL trying to nail down someone to do our kitchen, but.... Hands down the most important thing of being here is that reading and watching others has helped me really THINK about how I use my kitchen and what will work best with the compromises that I need to make...we typically all have some compromise levels in our remodels or builds, so I've come up with ones that are "workable" to me. I think about the kitchen that I almost would have had...and it would have been new. But disfunctional or at least not as functional as it should have been. There are going to be touches of GW throughout our kitchen. While I'm not going with the typical look (we've planned dark floors and dark cabinets...certainly not the favored look here), there will be a lot of things gathered from here that will be implemented into our new kitchen. We're going with induction - would have never had the guts to pull the trigger on that if not for here - none of our family or friends have it. Almost all drawers rather than roll-outs (why didn't I think before of how silly it is to open a door, roll out a drawer and then reverse the process. Way easier to go with a drawer. What to aim for in terms of construction of cabinetry. I honestly had very little clue before. Plugmold and LED strip lights - would have known next to nothing about neither of those. And so, so much more.

The cost to refinish marble countertops will be based on size,condition of stone(how severe is the scracthing, etching and or staining,cracks,chips,etc)type of stone(darker stones and some limestones can be tricky to refinish)time and materials. Special pricing if we change the finish from polished to honed(easier and reasonably priced) or honed to polished(which is impossible to do to granite on site- very-difficult to do on marble(can be pricey). Our pricing on an average kitchen(60-80sqft) with normal wear and etching will start at around $650.00 and up. Larger kitchens with multiple islands and multiple countertops and other areas over 100 sq ft can that can be done in a day will start $900.00 and up. Pricing will vary region to region. Stone refinishing is one of those trades where experience is very important. I have been doing this since 2003 and still learn something everyday. While some stones are easier to work on others can be a serious undertaking. Not to mention the possibility of damaging fixtures back splashes,cabinets etc. Other issues could be dust or water containment and proper masking techniques so appliances,wallpaper,furniture and fabrics are protected . So While I am sure that a very handy person could do or try to refinish the stone there is the question of purchasing and using the proper equipment. Hi Jem,

I have Vermont Danby Olympian White throughout my kitchen, including all countertops and a slab back splash.

I have some of those little white horizontal wavy lines, most of them are so deep that they can't be felt, others are fissures that can be felt a bit. Since they're a naturally occurring part of the stone, and my fabricator confirmed that they weren't cracks, they don't bother me at all.

If you have a fabricator who you trust, you can have them take a look. Just make sure you use a fabricator who is familiar with marble, ideally Danby. One who has rarely/never worked with marble might not understand, or might tell you to steer clear because they're not sure themselves whether the little lines are a problem and want to cover themselves.

Another idea would be to contact Vermont Quarries. I've found that they're really helpful.

Thanks for the good advise, Friends. Glad to know that no one feels these wavy lines are a problem. I think I should visit the stone again to see how I feel. Like others, I'm waiting to be "hit" by the right stone, so I don't want to settle, but am anxious to move forward. Thanks for the input.
