I'd start with the bedding or a fabric to use in the room and then select paint colors from there. There are lots of baby fabrics that are gender neutral.

I didn't find out the gender with either of my boys. I used green Central Park toile, green and white gingham, and a green and white lattice rug. The walls were Benjamin Moore Whispering Spring which is a very pale blue. The walls were going to be that blue even if I'd had a girl!

DD2 bought these ABC flash cards at Anthropologie. They don't show them on their website, but you can buy online. They are fairly large, very thick and just beautiful. She's going to hang them on rope or wire in his playroom.

I went with Noah's ark/rainbow in primary colors... an alphabet in primary colors works for gender neutral, and the colors take a baby into childhood.

There are some really cute bedding/window treatment/accessory collections at Babies 'R Us. I went with my daughter-in-law and she chose one with a cute frog motif. She knew it would be a boy, so we painted the walls a medium sky blue which picked up a blue shade in the bedding/valance.

I'm sure you could find gender neutral options there.

Loved the SR nursery, pps7, when I saw the show. Had forgotten about it.

Nurseries only last 18-24 months. Better to go with non-infant looking bedding, etc if you want to carry it forward into toddler and childhood. If she's getting a crib that won't convert to bed, not such a big deal. Artwork can be easily changed. Rugs, curtains, furniture (other than crib) not so much.

DD2 switched to a different crib before he was a year old - converts to youth bed. The rug was recently moved to the MBR sitting area and replaced. I bet the curtains will be changed next....And he's not even 2yo yet.

Allison - My nursery lasted longer than that. Each boy used it for 2.5 years or so and then moved to a different bedroom. I went with a gender neutral nursery so that I could use the same one for any children that we might have. I loved that it was soft and sweet, and since I wound up having all boys, it was my only chance to decorate like that. I enjoyed it for about 5 years, and I was able to sell everything once it had been outgrown, so I feel I got my money's worth out of it.

We had a traditional blue and white gingham nursery for DS1, that would have served equally well for a girl. Her room was red, white and yellow, and DS2 didn't move into a proper nursery until he was one (preemie with an anxious mom, he bunked in the MBR his first year). His nursery was mainly blue and white stripe, with several colorful coordinating fabrics in blues, coral pinks and greens. He loved that pink! I guess because of our experiences I would consider almost any color to be gender neutral nowadays.

Our guest room is SW Celery. It is a nice citrus green, a little hard to tell in this photo. I had read this is also a popular color for nurseries/child rooms.
