Exterior Wood door vs ThermaTru door - Dilemma
Comments (2)I'm not really clear on whether you have to replace your front door or not. Can you continue to use your current door or is it necessary to put in a new one? If it's just the storm door your husband wants, can you find a skilled carpenter to build you one to go one your current door? Then stain it to match, so it disappears. Alternatively, tell your husband you don't want to compromise with "good enough" and will keeping searching until you find "perfect." He may come to love your current door before you track down something you like better. If you must replace your door, there is a lot of choice out there. We used "Rogue Valley" door and it's beautiful and well-made. Although we could not see that exact door, we could see samples of that manufacturer and others at a local millwork supplier. I suggest contacting the manufacturers to find out who within 100 miles or so has samples of their doors. It will be worth your time to make sure you have chosen the right door. Comments (4)Just to let you know that HMI has a small geographical distribution, so may not be in your area. Provia doors are the best but their prices will literally take your breath away. HomeGuard very good and are also expensive but not stratospheric the way Provia is. ThermaTru, while not at the quality of the 3 mentioned, are good, and there are many satisfied customers. To determine which is the better choice depends on what you want out of this door, your budget, how rough is your climate, how long you plan to live there, and the like....See MoreTherma-Tru Fiberglass Entry Door Advice Needed
Comments (29)Ksc36 - I disagree with you about the composite door jambs. Do you actually have a door with them? I drank the marketing Kool-aid when I ordered my new door, and chose the composite door jambs that replaced the 25-year-old wood door jambs. I am wondering if you did same. The wood jambs are heavier, feel solid. The composite door jambs feel light, and not solid. I should have realized that the composite door thing is a way for door companies to charge more for something that is much cheaper for them to manufacture, and so they made up a bunch of hooey to make people buy them. Sounds great in the brochures though. The owner of the door contracting company told me he has begun steering his customers away from the composite jambs now that he's had some experience with them....See MoreExterior Therma-Tru fiberglass doors color fading
