Speakling of aprons........

When seeing the post regarding the cute apron I got to wondering if anyone on the KT is old enough to have worn a apron or remember someone who did.

When I was growing up most of the houswives in small town Iowa wore store bought print or feedsack print dresses and aprons. Sometimes the half apron and sometimes what is referred to as a granny apron.

I can remember my Grandma on a summer evening going to visit a neighbor and she would say " I've got to change my apron first."

Ah,the good old days. What memories !

My grandma wore an apron at home all the time. She always had a hankie in the pocket and some safety pins pinned on it so she always had one handy when needed.

What?? I wear an apron every time I cook. The bib kind.

I too wear an apron when I cook or do the dishes. I also have a garden apron with pockets for my tools and such.

I have made so many aprons I lost count but I have never had one on in my life!
Like most of what I make, I gave them away! LOL

I wear my bib apron all the time...saves on a lot of grease spots on my clothes when cooking.

I make aprons for everyone in my family...and they ask for more....lol

I wear an apron every time I cook, eat, and clean up afterwards. I got tired of ruining my clothes. I have the 'bib' kind.

PS: The residents where my special sister Annie lives get a kick out of me when I eat with her. Since I don't bring my apron, I always ask to have a bib like a lot of them use.

My grandma always wore one. She was a wonderful lady. She died a week after I got married ( 42 years ago). I was lucky enough to receive one and still have it to this day.

I can't make as much as a PB&J sandwich without wearing an apron. I constantly wipe my hands on the apron. I prefer the kind on a waist band, not the Bib type.

There is a KT history of the Pinneys.

My DM always wore an apron and my Aunt Kate practically lived in them. I remember how she used her apron to gather eggs from the hens.

My favorite fabric for aprons is the good terry cloth we use to get, but I can't find that any more.

    Yep, gotta have my apron!

Sometimes I even wear an apron at work--elementary school.

Pattico, what pattern do you use? I've made aprons but have never been happy with them.

socks..I bought an apron at the goodwill...I just lay it down and trace around it...

Some have ruffles and some have pockets with matching hot pads.

I hardly ever wear an apron although I have about 8 or 9, some of which were my mother's. I have her full length apron that fell to the floor to cover her long dress or skirt, that she wore when she hosted dinner parties in the days when people wore long dresses to go out to dinner. I always thought she was so elegant, even in an apron.

My Noni, Grandma, & G,Grandma all wore them, I have a few of their's in my BIG collection, I wear one everyday, I need to wear bib style ones. My new favorite, and my Dh's favorite is the one I received from our Jenni.

My grandmother's both always wore them and my mom did more often when I was a child than now. I used to wear mine more, but I think I've kind of forgotten about them. I really should start again - I am a messy one! I've been thinking about making a "chicken scratch" one, but the gingham at my local Wal-Mart seems too flimsey.

Here is a "chicken scratch" one my grandmother made me many, many years ago

I do not wear an apron although I have made many and given them away too. My Grandma always made her aprons and wore them all the time. I remember she never made a strap to go around her neck, she just pinned them in place on the front! I am hoping to get back to making some more aprons one of these days. I have lots of fabric now and patterns. The first apron I ever made was a half apron, made out of white feed sacking and trimmed with wide red rick rack. I made it in 4-H and I still have it. I was probably 9 years old.

My grandmother always wore an apron too, made out of flour sacks. And like cherbo's grandmother there were always a few safety pins attached to the bib.LOL She always had a sewing needle stuck in the lapel of her dress too.Don't know why but I guess in case of a rip that needed to be mended. It always had a string of white thread in it!LOL I use to wear aprons all the time and have several but never wear them anymore.I need to though cause I'm a messy cook.LOL Something always splatters or pops on my shirt.I like the ones with the bib.I think everyone should start wearing them again. It would save on paper towel use.Just wipe your hands on your apron instead of grabbing a paper towel!LOL
Barb-That's a neat apron.Lots of work and love went into that.My mother made a dress for my DD when she was about a year old that had that hen scratch border all around the bottom and across the top.One of those dresses with 2 yards of fabric gathered on the bodice for the skirt. It was the same fabric as your apron but green and white.

Both my grandmas wore them but I only did when waitressing. I would like them to come back in style, it sure would save a lot of clothes

I have always had an apron in my home. I would not cook in in nice clothes without one. Every time I use tomato sauce or chocolate I end up with it on me. I can throw the apron in the laundry, but have to work at getting stains out of clothes.

i've got one my grandma made, and cross-stitched..but never use...i swear an apron was one of the first projects we made in "home ec" classes in jr hi...that and a clothes pin bag, lol...another long lost item i bet...

My mom, grandmas always seemed to have one on when they were at home.I used to wear one.In my life i've made and sold hundreds of them.Back when i had my first born in 59 ,that's how i earned extra money. The lady next door to me had a standing order every year around xmas time for 13 of them, and she sent me many customers.

I wear an apron when I am cooking for company and the holidays for sure. Some recipes are just messy, such as my fried chicken which pops grease something awful, and requires an apron. I make do with one I bought at the post Christmas sales eons ago in cranberry and green. I need to find another bib apron as that one is fading fast. My DD wanted a couple of aprons when she got married. She loves the toile prints and I was lucky enough to find one for her in black and cream toile. I think it was the only one at the store.

I wear one when I can remember to put it on to cook. I even have one in the motor home! I always wear what I cook or eat. I bought my bib style aprons at Walmart and GFS. Under $10. Want a towel attached? Sew a button at the top of the center pocket seam and put a button hole in a corner of a dish cloth. Works great! In fact, I just had a bridal shower and the bride got an apron with towels attached to go with her other gifts.

Grandma always wore one, except to church, and maybe she took it off when they went shopping.

Thanks for making my remember her.

I love aprons! My Grandma always wore a bib apron and so did my Aunt Elsie. When my Grandma passed away I got her apron.

My Mom didn't wear aprons but she wore a "house dress" or duster I think they are called whenever she baked. They were so colourful.

When my Mom had Alzheimer's and started spilling her food and drink I went in search of bib aprons in the stores but couldn't find any. I then started searching the resale shops and every time I found a bib apron I would buy it. They were the best thing to use on my Mom. I then received a beautiful colourful apron from Ruthanna who used to post at the KT. My Mom loved that apron!

After my Mom died I put the aprons away in the linen closet. Then Lellie sent me an apron in a swap, a pretty yellow and blue William Sonoma apron After my kitchen was redone I brought out that apron and started to use it. I hang it off the corner of my kitchen door because it is so pretty. I have a lot of pretty things in my kitchen from KTers and I love and appreciate every single thing.

I now wear Lillie's apron every time I cook or bake - I have a bad habit of wiping my hands on the sides of my pants so the apron helps me to keep my clothes clean and to keep possible pet hair transfer out of the food I am cooking.

I love the pretty patterns on bib aprons and when my sister comes over and we have ribs or eating something messy I bring out the aprons for us to wear. LOL

The first thing we did in home Ec in high school was sew an apron. Then we learned to make hot chocolate and we had to wear hair nets.

I wish these lady cooks on tv woud wear a net or tie their hair back I stopped watching them.

I have several aprons and wear one whenever I am dressed for company and am cooking. I am a pretty messy cook.

I used to always wear an apron when I cooked, but I don't any more... but only because I don't have any that are in decent enough shape to still wear! I could easily buy several, but the only aprons I like to wear/use are ones made from terry cloth. "Regular fabric" aprons just aren't as absorbent/good for wiping your hands when you're cooking, and it seems no one makes terry cloth aprons any more. I guess I'll have to make one, but I never seem to get near a fabric store to buy the terry cloth!

In the 80's, I was given a bib apron that had the "B" word on it down the front LOL, LOL. I finally had to pitch it and got a different one, but still with a bib. It's as much part of my routine (such as it is) as putting on rubber gloves to do dishes and I sure have saved a lot of clothes with my apron :-)

I'd love to share the pic of me wearing the apron my DD gave me for Xmas but I can't post it. Should anyone be willing...I can email it to you to place in this post. DD gave my 6 yr old DGD the same one- only in parenthesis underneath it said:
    "In Training") LOL!
Both my mom & grandmas wore aprons in their kitchens-it was 'unthinkable' not to!
As I was in the food biz for 45 years (and my mom for 35 yrs)-it was just another piece of clothing we wore daily!

Mother always wore an apron. I inherited two of hers, and wear when I'm preparing family dinners.

Also have two from culinary classes, which I wear as well.

I remember my mom and nana wearing aprons when cooking when
I was a kid. The first thing I made in sewing class in
grammer school was a full white apron with a cap for your
    hair.

I have three heavy cotton bib-type aprons which I wear when cooking (or eating) something potentially messy. Especially anything with chocolate or tomato in it. That will invariably land on my chest! I have made several of these to give as gifts to men who fancy themselves the barbecue kings.

I have two aprons my maternal Gma made for my "hope chest" in the late fifties. One has the "chicken scratch" around the hem and the pocket, the other is a very pretty calico. They have never been worn, but are treasured.

I do remember when Mom found her longed-for flour sacks for sale. She bought a bundle of them to use as dish towels. Some had big flowers on them, some were plain, and a few had print on them. She was absolutely delighted with her find. Nothing dries as well as flour sacks, she would explain to us.

Here is Sharon_fl's apron. Isn't it adorable?

I remember aprons in the seventies. The old neighbour next door never left the house without one. It took a few years to realize that she had pockets on the inside. She had a klepto problem with other people's gardens.

We found out when she was trying to climb the hill to my uncle's house and slipped and fell. All these vegetables went tumbling down the hill. The apron style was one that went over the shoulders so it had a front and back.

    The History of APRONS...

I don't think our kids know what an apron is!

The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect
the dress underneath, because she only had a
few, it was easier to wash aprons than dresses.
And they used less material, but along with
that, it served as a potholder for removing
    hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on
occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty
    ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying
eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched
eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding
    places for shy kids.

And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around
    her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent
    over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in
    that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.
After the peas had been shelled, it carried out
    the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that
    had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was
surprising how much furniture that old apron
could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the
porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was
time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something
that will replace that 'old-time apron' that
    served so many purposes.

    REMEMBER:

Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the
    window sill to cool.

Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to
    thaw.

They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs
    were on that apron!

Pinnies (aprons) are hugely popular right now, you'll see them by the hundreds at Etsy, Craftster and Flickr. My mother wears a different pinnie every day and my father wears a bib one when he eats, since he's messy.

Here's my newest one- it's reversible, the other side is even wilder.

I was going to ask if you made this but after seeing the margarita fabric I know for sure.

    That's gorgeous.

Wow flamingo, that is COOL! Did you use a pattern or did you make it up?

How cute ! I had never heard of pinnies but now I gotta get one.
