Ikea cabinets, alternate door questions

Hello Everyone,

I'm cross posting this from over on Ikeafans.com. I'm not getting much of a response from anyone over there, so I thought I would try here.

We are in the process of building a new home and are looking to use IKEA cabinets in the kitchen. However, my lovely wife doesn't really like the doors and color combinations that are available. I have been looking at Scherr's cabinet and drawer fronts. The wife likes a couple of the styles and she has a stain she is interested in. This brings me to my first question. Where do I get the cover panels and pieces that will cover the sides of the cabinets? Does anyone else have experience with Scherr's, if so how was the experience and the quality?

I have attached the layout of the kitchen, although the island I think is going to be rotated 90 degrees because of the size. We wouldn't mind having a tiered island like in the design, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to make that happen with Ikea's cabinets. Any advice on this is appreciated as well.

I know nothing about Scherrs other than what I've read here. However, decorative side panels are typically just extra doors, so I assume they can provide those.

For the 2 tier island, they are built in 2 ways. Most commonly, you build a pony wall, that comes up a few inches above the lower counter. The cabinets are attached to one side, and the upper counter goes on top of the wall. You can also get brackets that attach to the lower cabinet and the upper counter sits on top.

The idea is that it creates a bar for sitting at. If you had taller cabinets on that side, there'd be no place for your legs.

They all have their favorite brands I was told. If that KD won't quote shenadoah just ask for someone else. I went in a few years ago and met with one KD who pushed diamond. When I went back I decided to use a different KD. The other one saw me but who cares. I wanted a no nonsence person and that was what I got. Hang around the dept. when they are busy and eavesdrop. One thing I am thankful for was that the KD suggested he price out cherry instead of maple with a glaze. It was much cheaper and more of the color we wanted. He knew this was all diy and offered suggestions like not to buy the shenadoah beadboard for the sides of the island cabinet but to buy it in the lumber department and paint it black. Stuff like that. The drawers are fine. In my 3 drawer 36" cabinet I have one drawer with a 12 person dish set. 12 plates, bowls, etc. They are corelle so not too heavy but still there is a lot in that drawer. Another drawer has heavy casserole dishes. All my bases are drawer except for a flat pan cabinet, the sink, and the corner. I did not get the lazy susan as I just don't like them. The lazy susan would have been pricy but I think they are in most cabinet lines. We do not baby are cabinets and they have been fine.

You may absolutely purchase Ikea cabinets without doors either online or in person, whichever you prefer. Each cabinet is really a collection of, say,10 items, each with a part #. At the store, a kitchen person will add the cabinet you want in a Harlig door, for example, and then go in and just remove the door, leaving the other 9 items in your cart. If you go this route, double check size, configuration, and frame color (birch or white) while they're typing it in. Mistakes happen. If you're doing this online, simply select the item you want in the configuration you want, and click on the "Show dimensions, weight and article numbers" link. Then copy each article number into the search button at the top of the page, and the item will appear. Buy it online. Repeat with the next 9 part #s. When you come to a door, just don't buy it. GW is great for some types of info, but you should really check out the Ikeafans web site for more guidance. In order to use Barker doors, you will need the measurements for the doors. You can find these on the Ikea web site if you look hard enough, or you can check out the Ikeafans link below. You'll have to look up info on hinge cup cut out size and location. Barker will cut them wherever you want them, but you need to know what to select/ask for. It is worth comparing the cost of a Barker Cabinet vs. Ikea/Barker Door. For ordinary cabs there's not that big a savings to be had with Ikea. For tall pantry/oven cabinets, or corner cabinets, the difference is substantial. Thanks, guys! I don't think I'm being clear re the limitations with the Ikea third-party delivery/installer. I contacted them regarding my previous house and an Ikea kitchen remodel, but I wanted to use different doors (Scherr's). So, basically, I would pay them to purchase, deliver, and install the boxes, and I would install the doors. Easy, right? Their response was that they "weren't interested." So that leads me to believe they want to do their jobs the way they want, which is their prerogative, but which may make the Ikea option more expensive than a comparable cabinet line. They won't itemize the install, in other words. At the end of the day, I am not a huge fan of that local installer, despite their good reputation, and I'd like to look at comparable cabinet lines that might have better staff locally. benjesbride - My husband did a great job with the Sektion cabinets we have, but he frankly doesn't want to devote the time to installing the cabinets. He's told me he would do the assembly, if it saved money, because he rather enjoys that, but he doesn't want to do the installation. Maybe I can talk him into it if the difference is significant enough, though!

If you order custom doors, usually you get the trim pieces from the same supplier, especially if they're doing the finishing on them.

I would be surprised if scherr's can't provide end panels and so on. I'd email them and ask. Barkers is another commonly mentioned supplier for doors and drawer fronts for ikea kitchens.

I've read positive reviews about Scherrs, and about Semihandmade. I think you can probably send them your planner file for a quote once you have figured out your door style. My local cabinet door fabricator is surprisingly inexpensive so I'm going to try them. But I'll have to supply exact measurements and do the precision drilling required.

Not sure if I understand your island question, but IKEA does sell brackets to elevate a countertop portion.

I used cabinets now. Walnut doors on IKEA boxes. Bought the finishing pieces from the local lumberyard. Here is the link to the finished kitchen. The thread is long, but all the details are there.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. The pony wall makes a lot of sense for the tiered island. Looks like I need to talk to Scherr's about the side panels, consensus is that will be something they provide to me.
