Help - room color situation for toddler room

Hi - I'd like advice on this situation... The room is currently a creamy/yellow color on top, a white chair rail, and a blue/green color below the chair rail. The bluish color is that of a Tiffany box blue. There is also crown moulding and a fairly tall window with heavy casing. The room looks very fancy and I'm wondering if it should be "toned down" due to it becoming a boys room.

I'd like to do as little redo as possible since we had all this custom created only two years ago. My thought was to only change the "Tiffany box" color to something else (maybe a shade of white???) that would help detract from the chair rail and tone down the fanciness.

I would make it a room for him. I'd go with his personality. Can you cover some things that would make it more reflective of his personality? Is he going to be in this room after toddlerhood? My boys are rocks, robots, spaceships, & animals. Can you hang some dimensional art like planets, animals, or shapes?

My son's room when he was a toddler also had a chair rail. We painted the bottom a medium mossy green and the top of the wall a pale sky blue. The chair rail was painted the green color as well. Using the chair rail as a kind of border, I stenciled ferns, ladybugs, lizards, snakes, butterflies, etc. to evoke a rainforest. It was very sweet and easily done. And of course stencils are so easy to paint over when they grow up. It was great for him because he loved rainforests. I agree with the above post -tailor it toward your son's interests.

This may sound strange, but have you considered any grays? When we moved into our house, two rooms on the second floor were painted gray--one a very crisp pale gray, and the other a little more taupe-y gray. I assumed we'd dislike the gray and paint over it...but my (now) 5-yr-old son has the crisp gray room, and our playroom is in the taupe-gray room. Gray seems to really bring out primary-little kid colors. And gray is great because your child won't outgrow it quickly, and you can change the color scheme easily. My ds's room has a blue-red scheme with a little lime green accent, and the playroom has blue and green furniture/storage, with a bright multicolored rug. These are my favorite rooms in the house. Sorry I don't have a specific gray to recommend, since the rooms were already painted when we moved in. Having said that, I will also say that we have a bathroom that is Polar Sky, and it's a very nice color, very clean and cheerful, with no odd undertones. I think it would be a nice color for a toddler's room.

Typed out a long post yesterday and then lost it! Ugh! Anyway, to summarize: 1. Consider getting neutral bedding and adding in your jungle theme with accessories like just the pillows and removable decal. That way, if your son just LOVES something else down the road, you can easily change it with the pillows and other minor accessories. 2. Your son's bed looks a little high-- though I have short kids, so maybe not for him. There are really cute stepstools with a jungle theme-- some are mass produced (check Target and Amazon) but you can also find them on Etsy. 3. Since you are open to removing the TV, I'd say not to put art supplies in there since I find bedrooms not to be the best place for that with young kids. (Depends on your child, though.) You could have baskets of books and open-ended toys. A radio/CD player is always nice, too. Could be a fun dance space! 4. I'd either lower the white shelves if they are for your son-- they do not look to be at a child's eye level, OR keep them up high but use them for breakable items. It's a good idea to literally get down at his level and see how accessible things are, what his view is, etc. Hang things for HIM, not for adults. VERY cute room!

I would get a day bed that is a trundle bed so that your child can have a friend for sleep-overs. Have large bolster pillows made out of the densest, firmest foam with removeable washable covers to go against the rails so your child and his/her buddies can sit up against them because that day bed will serve as their sofa. I would skip the wall paper because children grow quickly and what seems age appropriate now will be too childish in just a few years. You are better off getting an age appropriate large poster or two and putting it in an inexpensive take-apart frame and then changing it out every few years as they age and their interests change. I would get lots of book shelves and on those shelves get transparent containers that you put easy to read labels with words and pictures of the contents. It's never to early to teach "clean-up" and organization habits. Be sure to affix the shelves securely to the walls. Also get a dresser if you don't have a closet system to hold folded items like socks, underwear, shirts, etc.

Never having received a gift from Tiffany's I have no idea what color their boxes are. It's a lot easier to help if you do post a picture, since decorating is a visual art. How old is your son? What are his favorite things? Did you look at the Baby and Toddler rooms thread in our Gallery for inspiration and cool ideas?

LOL oceanna. Well, I've received gifts from there, but they are on the low end - I mean that nicely and sincerely. I'd not want myself or husband to spend too much. Actually, the color on the bottom half of the room is a custom match to the bluish "Partylite" boxes. It's like a silvery greenish blue, if that makes sense. I will try to get some pics posted.
