happy dance Slump survived

I did it - I finished the quilt. Did the last stitches in the binding last night and even made it through cutting and trimming threads, and pulling out exposed basting stitches. Had DH help me get a pic this am, and I feel kind of sad when I look at it - I can't believe this is what I was hung up on for 3 months! Oh well, it will get wrapped and sent to it's new home this weekend. Thank you so much for the support and cheerleading! You guys are great!

I like the simplicity of the pattern ... incredibly effective. What a striking quilt. I'm sure it will be very comfortable and truly loved in its new home.

Monarch butterflies have an amazing ability to find milkweed, even early in the season, when the milkweed has not yet bloomed. I have found monarch eggs on immature milkweed, surrounded by taller grass, and therefore difficult to see. The best explanation for this that I can think of is that the monarchs have an ability to sense, or smell, the odor of the plant that they use as a host. They are able to home in on the source of the odor, much as an airplane flying across the pacific can home in on a radio beacon. If monarch butterflies can do this, it seems likely that other butterflies can home in on their favorite plants. I am not aware of any experiments that have been done to prove this out.

Yes, a little in the morning. You get to listen to the birds, feel the fresh air, get in a morning walk and do some bending, cutting and pulling for exercise. Then, after it starts to get warm, or you just think "okay, that's enough" - stop there. That's what I've been doing. This way, I start another indoor project and get some stuff done inside and I still feel like I've enjoyed my gardens. During the time I AM inside, though, I have to admit, I do take a quick walk outside, look around to say hello to the flowers/birds/butterflies, etc. etc., but I try not to work those afternoons. This has kept me from overdoing it and has increased my interest in other things... while I still have my love of the outside and gardening... :0) Carrie

Lol, maybe they're out there Herboil. I'm 26, not too much older than you and I've been excited about growing plants ever since I was a tot and all through highschool. Not the typical mall shopping boy-crazy teenage girl but that suited me just fine. My high school boyfriend never quite understood why I enjoyed playing in the dirt so much. Heck, now my husband still doesn't quite understand what I get out of it but at least he came with 3 acres of land and he lets me do pretty much whatever I want on it so I can overlook his flaws! Keep lookin' and I bet you'll find one. There may be a plant-crazy gardening girl hiding inside someone you meet but you just have to coax it out. Take any potential girlfriend to Calloway on a date, maybe that will tell you something!! Danielle

Hi, Kathleen. It is a small world. Southampton is a beautiful place. Too bad it gets so crowded in the summer. RE prices in FL? I don't pay too much attention to them. We bought our lot for $130,000 in 1/04. In 2006 other waterfront lots on the street went for $400,000. They're probably down from that now since prices are pulling back. No matter what, FL is definitely no longer a cheap place to live. Our waterfront home on Long Island has taxes of about 11,500. We're expecting the FL house to be in the $15K to $20K a year. Add homeowners insurance of $6,000 and you're talking almost $2,000 a month to carry the house without a mortgage. I hope the market values keep falling in FL. The real estate taxes are based on full market value. Taxes on the lot quadrupled in three years - $900 when we bought, $3500 this year. If the values fall, so do the taxes. Once the house is done, we'll homestead it and then the taxable value can't go up more than 3% a year. Never thought I'd be longing to pay Long Island real estate taxes! :-) We'll enjoy retirement. Even though we'll work for a few years, my bride will still be taking it easy because she'll only be working one job instead of the two she does now. Kevin

It's gorgeous!!! I have had quilts that I lost interest in and then after I finished them I wondered 'WHY'.
Maybe it's just a mood that we are going thru.

Congratulations on finishing. I like the narrow winding border. That must have taken a long time to put on! I also like your iris.

Agree with Odessa. The simplicity of this quilt does make it effective, especially with that border. It's quite unlike any quilt I've seen, and it's pleasant to get a design surprise like that. I can hear your sigh of relief through the monitor. Nice job.

Karlene, I thought of you yesterday while I was taking a class on bindings. The instructor was showing samples of different scallop curves and discussing the "how tos". She said a very good, experienced friend needed help on her scalloped bias edged binding and struggled for so long that she finally cut it off the quilt and did a straight edge, she was so frustrated. The point was - it was better to do that than produce a poor job & I thought to myself 'or loose your mojo like Karlene!' You persevered, You won - Yea -You got your Majo back!!!! I also like your quilt. You should be proud for many reasons!

Congratulations! I like it, too. Simple and striking--course, iris is TN state flower so I'm biased.

Thank you all so much. I don't do a lot of applique and even though I chose a simple vine/leaf applique, it took a lot longer than I thought it would, and then the scalloped border was a slow process. I actually have another quilt ready to quilt and a top ready to be sandwiched - I set them aside to get a 'simple' wedding quilt done first! Ha! Onwards and upwards!
