I love the yellow in that room! My personal taste is not to put the TV on the mantel. They usually are uncomfortable to look at, and having a "free" mantel gives you lots of room to play with for decor.

How would it look next to the wall where the school desks are? Except that looks like a "walk-through" so it may be in the way.

Could the TV be on a stand below the window with the valance? At an angle in the corner. Then the couch could sit facing the fireplace and TV creating a small secluded area. Or is the room big enough for this and/or the TV able to be connected there? Also love the yellow color.

oakleyok - I've read the same about it being uncomfortable looking up at a TV sitting on a mantel - I'd also worry about the heat eminating from the fireplace.

That is the "walkway" area I want to keep open. Actually, I'm hoping (should we get the house) that I can somehow move that doorway going in to the kitchen over the the right (as you look at it, behind the desk) The kitchen needs some work (will be posting that issue if there's a kitchen remodeling area)

hilltop- hmmm, I guess you could do something in that corner angled, I hadn't thought about that idea, so thanks for bringing that up. I'll definitely give it more thought. The room is 15x16.

The yellow is okay but I may change it to a bit darker shade, or something else, though not right away. There's so much I want to do, but again, I may be putting the cart before the horse, need them to accept our offer which is a backup to one they have now - should know in about 5 days or less.

could you put a chair up closer into the room? and then have room behind it for the walk thru area? I know I don't like to be so far back from the tv. i don't see or hear so well anymore...lol!

maybe get one of those sofa's w/ the long part on an end.

You must be talking about a chaise. My modular has a chaise on it and if I used that, would have the walkway behind.

Any ideas about possibly using the base of the fireplace to put the tv in front of. I don't really see us using the fireplace unless we have a power outage, and thankfully, with how light weight the tv's are nowadays, they are easy to move around.

I was going to suggest the arrangement hilltop came up with.

But another arrangement might have the TV where the sofa is. Then you could have an L-shaped sofa/loveseat seating with one of them facing the TV and the other facing the fireplace.

Where is the entry door in relation to the child's desk?

I can't picture placing the TV in front of the fireplace,not even in South Florida.

The door by the childs desk in going in to the kithen, the first picture in the group is the opposite opening end of the picture. The last picture I was standing there when I took the first picture. That white door you seen in the background is the coat closet, which is the entry in to the house.

I'd like to try and keep the room as open as possible, but not as sparse looking as they have it. I could put the tv on the same wall as they have it and have a modular I guess, but I was trying to make the fireplace more the focal point, yet not have the tv in an odd position.

monablair - LOL - this house is in the Carolinas, not FL-that's where I'm leaving - never had a FP in my life, not that I've ever needed one, though it feels like we have one 10 months out of the year down here!

I know there has to be someone out there that has a similar set-up out there. I'll keep searching, but again, I appreciate all the ideas you give and have given.

Sofa or sectional with chaise should face fireplace, floating in center of room. TV would be in corner by window. If there is enough room, place a sofa table behind sofa. Or have sofa table along wall opposite fireplace with enough space between back of sofa and this table. Have walkways behind sofa and where backyard door is.

Hilltop has the right idea.

Place the TV under the window so the fireplace and TV are considered one focal point. Open the area up by just having white 2.5" blinds and a valance that is similar in color to the wall. As shown here it's dark (like the fireplace) and it makes the space look choppy. You want to keep this space light and airy.

The sofa has to be in front of the fireplace. Rule of thumb, leave 3' for traffic flow areas. That's all you need. Forget about over sized arms and big bulky furniture in this space. it's just too small. Select a feather/poly blend sofa cushion with a small profile and rectangular ottoman for the coffee table...to stretch out and relax.

You have room for one small upholstered chair to the right of the sofa.

On the wall where the TV currently is, place a sofa table, two tall lamps, large art work and tuck 2 small stools underneath for company.

thregrad and dezinerchick - Thanks so much for your replies and suggestions - you both are thinking along the lines of hilltop, so I'll definitely be taking those ideas and see how they work for the room - if I get the house, that is.

dezinerchick, you mentioned blinds on the window - what do you suggest for the door - I'm not one to have a pane of glass uncovered where, though it's in the backyard, one can look through it, esp. during the night.

I love my modular I currently have, but it's too big for this room, and the color doesn't go. I don't know what's under the carpeting there - the owners say concrete, but hard to believe that unless it was an addition after they built the house - the rest of the house is wood flooring, though there is carpet in the living and dining room (can't understand the reasoning behind carpeting a dining room, but that's just me, I guess)

I hate that carpet in there and will definitely be changing it to something else, probably wood. But that's a whole other issue.

I think I'd like to go more cottage style in this room - any suggestions?

Still hoping someone will post a picture of their room that looks similar and how it's laid out.

This photo is a sort of similar layout to yours. In this case the TV is above the FP. (mine is higher too and it doesn't bother my neck to view) I think your heavier wood mantel would help to deflect the heat to the TV coming from the FP. A sectional or couch and loveseat would help to maximize seating as you can see from the photo.

Could you put a few built in bookcases lining the "entry' area? I realize you want this to be a pass thru to the kitchen, but perhaps there would be enough room for the bookcases, this way you could dispay your books and othere accessories (I love bookcases in a room, it just makes it so cozy and welcoming to me anyway)

No matter which way you go with a window covering for the window (at least 2" blinds, no mini), you should do the same for the door for continuity. I love woven woods, as shown in judithva's image. Just know when they are rolled up, there's absolutely no privacy. At least with blinds you can filter the look. Both types have a cottage look.

Having all the floors the same would be less choppy. Once you do that, put a natural tone sisal rug in the center. Think organic and soft tones through out the house.

At first glance, the image above is very similar to your space; however, I'm concerned that your space is so much smaller and a sectional would just take up too much precious space. Also, this image has about 18" more wall space to the right of the window, which could make all the difference.
