What do you think of the new fabric line from Connecting Threads?

I just had to order some of the charm packs from Connecting Threads. I am impressed with the thread count, and the thick consistency of the fabrics. Some have a nice sheen. I have noticed that most of the fabrics seem to be made up of only two or three colors, so I think they are saving money by using fewer colors, and offering the lower price to us.

For a while, I was trying to decide whether to keep the charm squares uncut in their original package to use for color swatches, as a guide to buying larger pieces of the fabrics, OR whether to actually use the fabrics to make up a charm square project. I finally figured out that if I keep the project I make, I can still use it as a color guide. ;-P

Have you ordered any of these fabrics? Have you seen all the kits and free patterns that go with them? What do you think?

Maryliz, I have been looking through the catlog this week. I do love the photo on the cover,you can see the quilting . The colors are very muted on the new line of fabrics, notice that the price per yard is$5.96. A good price, I love charms, but looking at the kits they are reasonable and as you say, pattern comes with it. I think it is a pretty good deal. Rene

Maryliz, thanks for the info on their fabrics. I wondered if they were good quality since the price is so reasonable. I also think their kits are reasonable, too!

Ornithogalums??? Oh vetivert, you are bad, but Ornithogalum is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of spring chores and getting to work outside, usually in late Feb. Now I realize my question could have and should have been phrased a lot better. How about this? If the Bulb Forum members would submit their (own) pics of plants and blooms grown from bulbs for a new forum picture, what should it be? . Should it be open to anything grown from bulbs? Should it maybe exclude such things that have more 'specific' forums of their own, such as Lily, Tropical, and House Plant? Should it be an individual bloom, or as you suggested, maybe a still life flower arrangement of numerous delectable blooms grown from bulbs? Please 'scuse me for just having tunnel vision and tunnel thoughts of just Daffodils. At any rate, the folks who are having their spring now, can hopefully be trying to get some great pics. Ok...so when does anyone think we could/should start taking picture submissions? Should we wait until late 2010 so glads could be included by those in the US who grow them? Should we wait a full year (or nearly) so the members down under have an opportunity to have another summer blooming season, like for glads? hmmm...what is fairest? I guess before proceeding, I should check with the 'Powers that be' to see for sure if they would be willing to get the pic changed and updated with a pretty pic of our choosing. I hope lots of folks will give their input and in time, post their pics for entry. In doing a search here on the forum, it seems that Tulips and Daffs are the 2 things most often posted about. I imagine though that tulips are most frequently asked about, due to them having problems, or emerging early, or for not blooming a second season when they are thought to be perennials like daffodils. Polkadots, So nice to hear from you! I feel your pain on pulling the trigger on this decision!! If it were me, (you can pretend you're me if it makes it easier, then you can blame it all on me if it doesn't work) I'd do the floral for the chair (love, love that fabric. It is just so pretty.) I'd do the lattice pattern for your drapes, not a solid brown. I say this because I think the lattice goes really nice with the floral fabric and if you like the idea of a brown panel, then the lattice pattern gives you that solid brown feeling with just a little something different. It isn't an overpowering pattern that will compete with the chair. The only thing I'm not feeling is what to do with the stripe. I sortof like the idea of keeping the wicker chair and doing the cushion in the stripe and maybe pillows for the sofa and leather chair. I'm not sure about a solid colored brown chair. With the drapery panels being so brown, it might be hard to find a brown fabric that would go well with the drapes etc. It might make the leather chair look like an after thought in the room. Could you get another brown leather chair? Maybe you should do the chair and drapes, get that all in the room and then decide on what to do with the wicker chair. Can't wait to see what you decide!

Rubyvine - thanks for the kind words - I'm glad to be able to help.... Sreeb- This will not work - as it is NOT approved by MIA as a suitable method. It WILL fail - rodding is an inferior method of support for overhangs - as opposed to corbels and counterbalance plates - it's just that simple. The first time you apply a dead load to the overhang without any corbels or plates underneath - and the unsupported span exceeds 6 inches in 2CM stone, or 10 inches in 3CM stone - the risk factor of fracturing the stone at the overhang increases exponentially........ I have been doing this for over 25 years - you can either do it right - or do it wrong. Relying on rods alone to prevent a fracture is not only wrong - IMHO - it's just plain dumb - besides - you cant add "tension" to rods in a stone top assembly - It does work in post tensioned concrete, as that type of application HAS the ability to apply tension before the pour and after, but in this type of application - applying tension is impossible to do - does that make sense? hth kevin

Since I needed to make a decision on this fabric and hadn't heard back from Connecting Threads, I called. I'm sure they will respond but I need to get going on this project. The women I talked to said that they were told today (I'm thinking I wasn't the only one asking the question) that this fabric comes from Mexico. Because they have bad water ( her words not mine) they have to add something to the water to make the fabric. This additive gives the fabric a fishy smell, her term for what I called a petroleum smell. She said if I "air" it out the smell will come out. Also about the design she said all of their fabric has painted on designs. I've gotten fabric before from them ( christmas wall hanging kit) and I didn't notice that the design was painted on. This CLEARLY is painted on. She said it shouldn't come off with washing and using. Because this quilt project is for my loved daughter-in-law, I am returning the fabric. I have never purchased fabric that smelled. Well maybe Wal-mart but just once. Unfortunaltely they may have to give me a merchandise credit and I don't plan on buying from them, certainly not fabric. If anyone else buys it and "airs" it out, please let me know.

Here's a little one I made of the charm pack of "Wildflowers in Spring" fabrics - I ordered an extra yard of a few of the fabrics, and cut a few extra squares from them to make the math work. I like the fabrics - they are real subdued, and the fabric has a nice soft silky feel to it.

I loved their indigo line that they had. I blinked and they sold out! :( I am hoping that they will run it again.

I just received an order last week. I got a charm pack to check out the quality. I agree that it is up to par on all counts. I like their thread as you can't beat the price, so along with a few other things I was able to get the free shipping which is a +. Rebecca, if you go into their web site they still have the blue indigo. I think that is nice too. Jayne

Well I purchased a kit from them with mixed results. The fabric which is suppose to be 44" wide isn't. The fabric cuts are short so a 1/2 yard was cut to 17" which became a problem and the directions to cut the strips needed the 44"wide fabric.And there was a lot of shrinkage. I wasn't overjoyed with the fabric which seemed dull in color. However I was in email contact with them and although not overly prompt in answering ( quilters have limited time a patience) they did offer to replace the shortened fabric. I carved the piece out but will think twice about ordering. Just my experience

Thanks for letting us know about your problems. At least we can take that into consideration. "Lots of shrinkage"? I'll be sure to look out for that, and report back. I have to finish my charity quilt first.

Please keep in mind that they are VERY willing to correct any errors. Not everyone complains as I do about not getting what I paid for but they will ship you out fabric or return the item.

I just ordered a kit from them and I am putting it together now. I actually have extra fabric. I love the colors. The colors I have are muted, but that is what I like about them. They are fall colors and really warm and cozy feeling. I believe the ones I have are supposed to be muted because there are couple in the kit that are very strong colored.

I've ordered a couple of things from there, and I've been pleased. Sorry you had such a bad time with them hbquilter.
