Residing house - ideas

We're residing in vinyl ( hopefully 4.5 traditional on the whole house ) and I'm not sure if we should do some trim differences or add in a different style of siding as they did originally. We're thinking of a darker taupe/grey colour and right now we're thinking of a matching corner trim with white window trim, facia etc. Anyone see this as a big mistake? or have any suggestions

Sorry to hear about that. Is it uncomfortable? Hopefully you'll be back in a residence soon. The house in the picture looks nice, maybe you can reside there ;-)

LOL :-) thanks for the laugh...care to comment on whether I should go with solid trim vs white? ( I would think you owe me that much for the sass :-) )

Your brother is lucky to have you. :) Hopefully he'll join our forum so we can all enjoy his new home and landscape. I hope so. In any case, I like Easy's suggestion of a gift card--that really does offer some nice flexibility. Most of the local nurseries around Phoenix also offer gift certificates so that's an option as well if you give them a call. Another idea would be some of the great books for gardening in the Phoenix metro. We have a nice faq of books that people recommend. 'Arizona Gardener's Guide' by Mary Irish would be a good book to give if he doesn't already have it. It, and the others on our FAQ section on books would be good ideas too. Should I buy a stucco house and reside it?

40 years ago we bought a stucco house that was at that time about 80 years old. It was 3 stories and 5200 sq. feet. The stucco was black with carbon and age and was cracked in many places. We patched up the damaged parts and then re-painted it with latex acrylic and a large fluffy brush. Yes, it took around 20 gallons of paint because it just soaked right in but the house was still original. It was the original home of Edward Hines of Hines Lumber in Oak Park, IL. The inside of that house was full of oak woodwork/wainscotting, etc., solid oak hardwood floors, marble baths/shower and was just an incredible house in bad condition when we bought it. We restored it, sold it for twice what we paid in the 70's which was $165,000. That house is still standing, still has a stucco exterior, and recently sold for close to $1,000,000. (Great house, great suburb of Chicago and GREAT PROPERTY TAXES.

I wouldn't call this a real Tudor, more a mish-mosh with some Tudor trim. That is why it doesn't look "right" to you (or me). Half-hearted gables, the door is wrong and lacks importance, it altogther seems not graceful. If you don't want to pull off the faux half-timbers, you could paint them out -- make them fade into the overall siding. You need to decide which direction you want to go -- I think there might be things you could do to "fix" the Tudor look to an extent -- changing the dark paint in the gables would be a start, maybe adding another texure (stone or brick) around the door area. As many have mentioned above, the right color scheme can make a huge difference. My inclination would to go in a direction that might suit the overall shape of the house a bit better though. Your roof's shade of brown is not a bad one and can work with several greens, blues, reds and, of course, neutrals including a few grays. You are lucky that you can paint which gives you infinite color choices. If you don't want the color to pop too much because you are close to the street, choose a muted tone. There are lots of gray- blues, blue-grays, green-grays that would lighten up the house but not be too strong.

I think white trim is going to match the doors and windows, good choice.

As for the contrasting vertical/ horizontal pattern, It seems to work with your house, but how does it fit in with the neighborhood? Without the different patterns, the house would look very boring.

I think that the front wall needs something to give it character, maybe a vine trellis? Or maybe some decorative wood slats mounted to the surface?

I wouldn't add any additional lines of siding. I'm not a fan of the vertical under the window but I could live with it.... : ) What the area really needs is some landscaping.

Nothing wrong with going with the taupe/gray color but be sure not to go with a white/white trim. IMO you'll need an off-white or cream color that compliments the house color you choose.

I thought about a cream, but my pragmatic side says that if it ever needs to be replaced matching the colour would be harder than matching a white.
Landscaping is on our 10 year plan :-)

Cream doesn't necessarily have to be a yellow color. What about BM Mascarpone or Linen White or SW Roman Column or Snowbound? Perhaps it could be better described as a milky white rather than a stark, bluish white. White is probably one of the hardest colors to choose because their are so many options, but there are many that would compliment taupe.

You could always plant annuals in the spring until you can do a major landscape project. I also think slate would look really good on your stoop if you do taupe.

Our contractor said "Savannah Wicker" is the most popular color siding used now and most people in our neighborhood used it as well.

We went with three colors -- Savannah wicker for the normal siding, a second, lighter color for the window trim and a third color for the "cedar shake" we put in the peak.

Just an idea -- we had boring vinyl replacement windows. Our aluminum trimmed them out beautifully -- if you can find someone who is good at bending aluminum -- they can really dress up your windows and make them pop!
