code re Interior stairs from room to room?
Comments (9)I realized I should clarify a few things. The attic will be unfinished in the rebuild, but we have emphasized that we'd like to finish the attic in the future when funds allow and therefore requested a real stairway instead of a pull down and collar ties that will allow for minimum ceiling height requirements. This must be why architect is concerned (but I will verify with him). Our laundry room is on 2nd floor off the main hall that leads to stairs to first floor. Perhaps the code requirement of terminating stairs at an Exit pathway or public way means that the laundry room cannot have a door that separates it from the hallway? In other words, perhaps if the laundry didn't have a door it would be considered an extension or branch of the main hall? Of course, a doorless laundry room would be problematic with my messy ways... :)...See MoreHow to attractively attach a wide interior threshold?
Comments (6)Thanks again for the great suggestions. My husband did the screws and wood plugs and it blends in beautifully. I messed around with stain colors, using a combination of Minwax Provincial and Driftwood to tone down the red and it now looks pretty compatible with the floors. I've forgotten how to post pictures here so here's a link if you want to seen the finished product. Comments (10)I interpreted brutuses answer "paint the inside of the doorway the same color as the first room you enter" as follows: I have a family room on one side of my kitchen and a dining room on the other. Both are painted the same color. As I enter the kitchen, I would paint the inside "doorways" the same color and once you are in the kitchen, that is a different color. You could reverse that and say what about when you come out of the kitchen, but you can't come out of the kitchen without having "first" gone into it, by way of one of the other rooms. The continuity of the color stays in tact. I think that answer also means it will vary by interpretaion and individual opinion of the flow of their space. I also questioned the continued use of white baseboards/trim. The contrast of the white baseboards remind me of the way I learned to color and always outlined in black, to keep my other colors within the lines lol. I decided to use a wood stain that matches the floors. It's time to color outside the lines... :)...See Morehelp with interior door thresholds
Comments (4)A "threshold" is for an exterior door and provides weather protection and drains to the outside. For an interior door a raised "saddle" allows a small undercut on the door bottom and yet the necessary clearance for area rugs. If undercut size or rug clearance is not an issue you would only need a "transition" or "reducer" strip between the different materials (or material heights) which should be narrow and located so it can't be seen from either side of the door if possible. At tile flooring in bathrooms it is normally made of marble with a beveled edge....See Morejulienpete
