mosiac border design in back of range-is it outdated?

so, thanks to everyone on here we decided to go with the crackle rizi subway tiles.

i'm contemplating do some type of rectangular design with this mosiac, in back of the range. do you think the mosiac glass tiles are on the way out, and it will look dated very fast?

only the border would have a couple layers of the glass mosiac tiles though.

No, I don't think it's outdated, especially if you're just using the glass mosaics as a border. I have read on several sites that glass mosaics overall are on their way out, but I still like them anyway.

Yes, I don't like or respect these people as described, although I do at least understand businesspeople's refusal to guide customers to important emotional choices--lots of opportunity for blame later on there, especially with people who don't really know what they want, like you. You're not in shape to make these decisions quite yet, but can be. With the available choices limited, my decisions would have been made within a half hour, 10 minutes for choosing my favorites while trying them out in sunlight, artificial light and shadow, 20 for playing with any other possibilities anyway just to make sure--because I know what I like and don't. You should put them off for a day or two if necessary (how they feel about it is no more your concern than your eventual satisfaction with your choices is theirs') while you educate yourself about what you really like, or just become reacquainted with your own preferences. Sit down with kitchen web sites and magazines, as many as you can get (splurge at the magazine rack), and print and tear out pictures of everything you like. Grab all the cabinet brochures you can find. Don't try to match the choices your builder offers--at this point, choose EVERYTHING you like. Bulgarian castle, California beach house. Be sure to include pictures of other rooms with fabrics and colors you like. Look your piles over and sort them out into types (most of us are drawn to more than one look). You'll see patterns of what you like--figure out what it is you like in them--cabinets darker than floors? Floors darker than cabinets? Strong contrast, medium contrast, or harmony with little contrast? Tendency to neutral browns, or golden or reddish? Choose those pictures that are possible for you in this house and discard the rest--without regret. The choices you have this time around are very nice. By now you're learning what you need to know to make these decisions--or maybe have just erased the confusion too many choices at once have caused. You still have to tackle the backsplash decision, which ideally should be made before everything's finalilzed. What do your pictures say you like? Drama, via movement or contrast, or both? Serenity? Big tile? Little tile? Horizontal? Vertical? Diagonal? Urban-suburban sophisticate? Family cottage? Etc. Now that you have regained control and know you won't be making some awful mistake, enjoy!

If you are selling I think a border has a lot more chance of feedback than no border. Meaning, if the bs was just subway, then there probably won't be comments like "I wish there was a border" because they don't know what they are missing, but if there is a border and potential buyers might say " I don't like the border". Buyers are quite picky and insane these days. Been there, done that. If you think you aren't selling, then by all means do what you like. Life is too short to just be designing your home for a potential possibility you might sell it. No matter what, it will look clean, current, and fresh. And those are always good.

I just put in the Horus Art Cristalli tile in biscuit and I love it. I am awaiting the grout (which I will do in a matching color). I have honey/toffee maple cabinets in a Shaker style door, Crema Astoria granite (a creamy granite with white, black, and garnet areas, and with some subtle but not overpowering gray/silver movement). Even though I love clean lines, I chose this tile over the Tiffany (which is a straight subway) because it has a handmade appearance (the lines are kind of wavy, which go with the movement in the granite). It also has a little sparkle, which my granite does as well. I did not do a border or accent in my backsplash; I used only the HA Cristalli subways. I don't have a big kitchen - it's 10x10, only 15" from cabinet to counter. I chose to leave it plain as I want the focus on the granite and not the tile. I am so happy that I did! When I get a chance I will post some pictures.

The table is just a filler I put in there. Hubby wants island seating, and it's really the only thing he's explicitly requested out of this entire remodel, so getting rid of the seating is unfortunately not really an option. I know it's close I'm open to ideas for better flow and use of the open space. I tried rotating the island and it gave better aisle clearances but i couldn't come up with a workable arrangement of cabinets that actually worked with the perimeter. I scribbled in the beginning of the bottom rooms so you can see how they relate. I have pondered about either putting in a bench (at a later date) against the wall with more seating and for storage and using a regular DR table or putting the table more centered in the room. It's just kind of an awkward size room. We are rather informal eaters, so I have no problem with pulling the table out into the center when we have company for more seating space. I'm really thinking chopping 10" or so off the island might be the best solution for some of these issues. I just seem to be stuck in my brain about wanting to do that LOL. But nothing is installed or roughed in yet, so if you want to play, have at it.

i kind of like this one a little better

less busy, but ties in with our cabinet color very nicely.

hard to see but granite has some light tan mica sparkly bits in it, matches this glass tile very well!

Well, about to place our order and now getting cold feet lol.

Do you think the subway with the mosiac, goes with my cabinets/ granite?

I think it will look fantastic, and I think it is not dated. ( at least in my opinion it's a classic.) I have something similar to the second one you show for accents and of course i think it's gorgeous - that's why I have it. I did want to mention that in the wall it still looks great but has less of the depth or dimension that you see. (mine is also a darker blue/grey so that might hafve something to do with it?)
Anyway I think whichever combo you choose will look great~ you have already made great choices. Relax and enjoy

I think both options will look fabulous too! I am not as in love with mosaics as I used to be, but I think how you're going to use them will look great!

I like the second tiles better because they are a larger format, have better sparkle and are not as multi colored/busy, because your counter is busy (in a good way).
They also coordinate better with the Rizi tiles.

I have to admit that I am not a big fan of mosaics. Having admitted that, the colors you chose are lovely. Have you considered how the mosaic inset would draw the eye's attention when you enter the room? When I look at your kitchen, my eyes were immediately attracted to the big beautiful windows and views. I'm wondering how this inset would compete with the view? Hmmm, perhaps simplicity on the backsplash might work the best.....

I'm not a fan of the little 1"x1"glass mosaics either. And I'm partial to a cleaner backsplash. I think those first mosaics would draw the eye to that spot. Why do you want to do that? I never quite understood why people want to draw attention to wall behind the range. I know it can be a big blank area, but still........

I can see going with a plain backslash , as a few of you suggested, If i had a white cabinets. I haven't found too many wood kitchens with just the rixi tiles.

My tile designer suggested the mosaic (1st pic) so it would help tie in the wood cabinets. I'm not putting up too many of the mosaics, just a thin border. Do you think that would still be too busy?
I just can't make a decision on this!

do you see your backsplash as being a focal point or "accessory"?

whether they are in or out doesn't matter if you want that spot in your kitchen to make you smile every time you walk in your kitchen.

you've probably seen doonie's lovely backsplash. i think it makes her very happy, regardless if anyone says this or that is in or out.

so maybe that will help guide your decision in how much bling to put into it, or how simple you want to keep it.

glad you decided on the crackle subways, though. whether they are in fashion or not in the future won't really matter, imho, because they are so pretty. :)
