Got my Oncotype DX test results yesterday and I'm in the lower percentile which means that Chemotherapy typically does not make a significant difference in long-range recurrance of this cancer.

I'll be taking the after-cancer drug Femara for five years, which will give me a less than 10% chance of long-range (10 years) recurrance. Probably considerably less since my lymph nodes weren't engaged at all. Adding Chemotherapy is expected to drop my chances by just 1 to 2%. So, the known risk inherent with Chemotherapy is greater than the degree of benefit I might gain.

No Chemo for me!

I slept better last night than I have in weeks ...

Give all these DH a year or 2 and let them adjust to this new found "thing" called wintersowing. Let them get "their bearings adjusted" to the results of wintersowing with seedlings, planting out, blooming and then you start to here such things as: Well how are those containers doing? Those containers still OK out there? Hows life in the container collection? How's it going in the container pit? Anything green outside? Any birthing done today? Has the green wave hit? to finally after 7 years of wintersowing Am I a dad yet? Am I a grandpa yet? Am I a great grandpa yet Am I a great, great grandpa yet? This labor and delivery just takes far to long, time for the delivery to start. I'm going to check out the containers, as he goes out with flashlight in hand and comes in 10 minutes later looking all sad and says "OK, so I'm impatient, what do you want from me? Susan Would there happen to be a common name for a lindera benzoin bush? I've noticed you are enamored with butterflies and moths, just curious how you acquire so many species, collecting or commerical? I am putting in several new beds and am trying to divide and bargain hunt as much as I can this fall, then splurge on bedding plants in the spring, I have worked a deal with a commercial grower to buy wholesale. Connie, Where do you live? You'll want to find someone local. If it's not close to Knoxville, about the only help I might offer is a recommendation to call a local saw mill. If they don't deal in this stuff (which they probably will), they could tell you who does.

Good for you Stoney. My sister was put on a pill also. I don't know what kind of cancer yours is/was, but hers was breast cancer, (calcification) caught very early.

Leslie, mine was breast cancer also, invasive ductal type. Not caught as early as it could've been, but thankfully it turned out ok. I chose a double mastectomy in an attempt to avoid going down this particular cancer path again. Now I have a pretty darned good chance of that being true!

Chisue, Femara is a drug used after surgery, which inhibits the recurrance of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. The other option is Tamoxifen, but since I'm postmenopausal I went with the Femara since it boasts a higher success rate. It's one of those drugs that, if you saw it on TV and they were listing all the possible side effects, you'd wonder ... why on earth would anyone take THAT?????

I was on Tamoxifen for 5 years and now Femara for 4 years and on Femara for at least 1 more year. Actually my onc doc says he doesn't mind and is thinking of keeping me on it for as long as I want. He originally said that if the studies show that it is best to be on it longer than 5 years he would keep me on it for 10 years. The studies are just being completed now for the 10 years but he didn't have the results yet. I have had no problems with Femara. He recommends bone scans once a year and take Calcium and Vitamin D supplements. Femara is expensive though.

Hi, Heather ... thanks for letting me know how you're doing with it, I'm naturally a bit leary (I rarely even take an aspirin!) when I read the pamphlet that says what all could result. I haven't gone to a forum for Femara users yet, to read any success stories ... while waiting for my test result I made the mistake of going to a forum for the type of Chemotherapy he was going to put me on, and the stuff I read just upset me too much.

It *is* expensive! I know the number was $350, can't remember if that's the three-month supply or just the single month. Thank heavens for insurance, which is the only reason I can have it.

I am doing the Calcium/vitamin D tablets, I already have somem osteo signs, as well as slight arthritis. So we want to keep them from getting any worse.

Hmmmmmmm I will have to look at my bill but I'm sure it is between $500-$600 for a three month supply. I'm almost out and it is time to go get some more. Fortunately I have insurance. I'm glad you don't have to do the chemo but I would do it all over again if I had to. Yes I agree, neither of us will ever take our health for granted again. I've certainly learned not to stress over the small things in life.
