Should I re-think my floor in the white-white-white-cream bath?
Comments (3)No, I would not switch out the flooring. The AO tile is not cream, it's a warm white. The difference may be subtle but an offwhite/white color scheme is beautiful if planned from the beginning and is rather difficult to do well and not look like you got a bargain on mix and match fixtures and tile. Go the distance with your original plans and it will all be fine. If anything I might consider going with a different color than ultra-white on the walls. Maybe a soft grey or sage green or aqua or something....See Moreanyone ever paint their brown wood furniture white / cream?
Comments (7)Recently I bought (after measuring very carefully to make sure they were not too tall!) floor to ceiling dark brown, stained and lacquered bookcases from a store that was going out of business and selling (or basically giving away) their display cases. I filled in a few screwholes with plastic wood, lightly sanded a few rough areas, painted the cases inside and out with a good-quality white primer (this is the essential step!), sanded away any drip marks, and then finished with two coats of the same paint my daughter and son-in-law had used to paint the woodwork in the house they had recently bought. I had a handyman bolt them to the walls on either side of the living room fireplace and then add trim around the top which matches the rest of that in the room. The bookcases look completely built in. They were excellent quality pieces with crown moldings and striated rails---they look wonderful!! No one would ever guess in their previous life they were old brown dismanteled display cases from a store that had gone out of business! Paint will do wonders. As for the pulls, don't dream of trying to paint them-- take one of the old ones to Home Depot or a local hardware store. They will help you buy new ones which will fit the existing holes (never try to drill new holes--that leads to real problems which a coat of paint can't fix!!) Good luck with your daughter's room--I know it will be beautiful and she will appreciate your hard work as my daughter and her husband did....See MoreRL Studio Cream,Deep Cream, Flour Sack White, Faded Clouds: tone?
Comments (6)OSH, thanks for giving it the old college try, as the saying goes. The carpeting is pale beige, trim is (alas) honey oak, and not getting painted any time soon. Red, completely agreed. The reason I asked for input is that I think my eyes are crossing after looking at about 20 paint chips too many: a LOT of the RL pale neutrals look really grey to me. And many of the gazillion colors I've tried to test have looked grey in my MBR anyway, even in full sun or with every light on at night! (I know -- new bulbs and more lighting -- it'll happen but not soon.) Some of the greyness has come from bad colormatching, and maybe I'm choosing hues with a lot of grey in them b/c I subconsciously like it, but it's really not the color I want in this room. I'm after a warm, very light brown (read a real estate stager's blog in which she called it "dark white", is that counterintuitive or what?). But wait.... I just realized something. Can HD colormatch BM colors in the RL paint? Hmmm... (no, someone tell me to stop!) Rmkitchen, given my growing grisophobia (irrational fear of grey), I really appreciate your post. Evidently the RL colors are very complex, pigmentwise, and another poster here said hers looked *lemony* in her space -- which I could see, when I took the paint chip into my much sunnier LR/DR. If this helps at all, I think I'm narrowing it down: Studio Cream, Flour Sack White, with Deep Cream a distant third. If my HD can colormatch BM, I might ask them to try mixing me a quart of Ivory Tusk in the RL paint....See MoreCan you mix cream furniture with white trim?
Comments (13)Thanks so much Lynn. I used to know what the floor is. I'm pretty sure it's three-inch quarter sawn white oak. The stain is a custom stain that's mostly natural with a little nutmeg. It's a Swedish finish. Annz, funny you should mention the rug because that is what we're starting with: a very colorful bold rug which I absolutely love--but had been wondering about what furniture to put on it. The cream or beige definitely answers that question. I'd love to see photos of your room....See Morejade.d
