We called them Sloppy Joes too, but no beans in it. I loved them, especially the ones my mother made.

Now I have a hunger for some.

Sloppy joes here too, no beans! We seldom had them so I usually only make them for 'special' meals like football games or something similar. I guess that is when mom made them, I really don't know.

I grew up with them as "sloppy joes" - the ones at school did have a few beans in them and they were awesome! I think they just put the leftover chili in them, lol! That was the only meal that was good.

Where I live now, they call them "maid-rites" - there is a chain restaraunt with that name based in Iowa. Some people do call them Tavern's also.. so I guess you can't lose - whatever you call them :)

Same as Iowagirl. Called maid-rites and they are served at alot of outdoor functions along with the other choice, hotdogs!

We've always called what most consider Sloppy Joes, Barbecues. Don't know why, that's just what my mom always called them.

Didn't grow up with Sloppy Joes or ever hear of the other two

Some food company sells Sloppy Joe mix in a can...I remember seeing the ads, and the cans in the supermarket. They look horrible. Never tasted it.

We have the maid-rites too. But, I grew up eating the B&G burgers (loose meat hamburger). I always make them for summer get togethers.

Sloppy Joes here too, no beans. I never heard of them containing beans. If they contained chili powder they were called Spanish Hamburger. Ours also contained rolled oats to stretch the meat and to absorb the juice. Usually contained ketchup, mustard, and worchestershire sauce, salt and pepper, maybe a bit of brown sugar plus onions and sweet peppers too. It does taste really good. Barbecues are something different, contain pork or beef, not hamburger.

Grew up calling them wimpies, around here they are 'barbecues'. I've made loose meat sandwiches and they are a little different than wimpies or barbecue, which generally have a tomato base (ketchup, chili sauce, etc).

Never heard of taverns.

Whatever you call them, I love them. They're really popular for serving crowds.

Oh, in my loosemeat hamburger, I don't use beans. They don't have any bar-b-que flavor either. Hamburger, onion, worchestershire sauce, horseradish, a little mustard and a little ketchup.

Sloppy Joes here. No beans. Loosemeat sandwiches are just chopped meat, without the tomato based sauce.

They were called Sloppy Joes where I grew up in Illinois, but they didn't have any beans. I never heard of them having beans. I haven't had one in a very long time. I use to love them.

Mom always called them 'barbequed hamburger'. I still make them. I use onion powder, garlic powder, brown sugar, catsup, and the secret ingredient - liquid smoke. I let it simmer for awhile covered, then uncover to cook off some of the liquid. They are best if you brown the buns, too.

Sloppy Joes and Loose meats are not the same. Sloppy Joes have a tomato barbecue base and loose meats a broth kinda base. I never heard of a tavern...

How do you serve a loose meat sandwich? On a bun? Is it just browned hamburger not formed into patties? Is Maid Rite the same thing as loose meat? They sound wonderful and I'd like to try them.

We have chopped beef sandwiches (BBQ).

We call them maid rites also because I live in Iowa. They put coke in them while they are cooking them up.

I'm with ruthieg and why wouldn't I be. We both hale from TX. I had never heard of tavern or Maid Rite until today and loose meat sandwiches entered my vocabulary from the old Roseanne show on television. Before that I had never heard of them.

Sloppy Joes here also. Made with ground beef,tomato sauce onions,peppers and spices. No beans.

BBQ Beef is shredded or pulled meat in BBQ sauce.

I've always though loose meat burgers were without sauce. Just onions and ground beef served on a bun.

I think what they are called and how they are made just depends on what part of the good old USA you were brought up in.

Our town has the litte cafe in it that serves the loosemeat sandwiches that Tom Arnold was always talking about...when he was married to Roseann. They are called Canteens and there's nothing like them any place else in the world...people travel from all over the country and have to stop to have a Canteen.

Monica-The canned Sloppy Joe Mix is just the seasonings and sauce mixture that you add to your own ground beef.You can also buy the Sloppy Joe seasoning packets to add to the meat and tomato sauce.I prefer to make my own.

Loose meat sandwiches are BBQ sandwiches in this neck of the woods.I have made "faux" barbecue sandwiches with browned hamburger meat and barbecue sauce.Good!! Hmmm......I may just fix that for dinner/supper tonight.

Sloppy joes here never heard of them with beans...LOVE them side for us.....homemade fries...the kids beg for them....Our friend Lena from Germany we send back the cans of Sloppy Joe for her boyfriend when he was a f/e student they had them and he called them slappy joes so that is our new name for them here we never call them sloppy anymore LOL Stacy

Sloppy Joes on a bun, Yummy! Without bean here. I have never heard of them with beans. I like them with a side of barbecued corn chips.
Lilliepad-Please post your recipe for Sloppy Joe's. I have always used the canned ingredients for Sloppy Joe's then added that to my hamburger meat. Yours sounds gooooood. I would just like to know the portions of each ingredient to your Sloppy Joe's. Thanks.(:-)

Sloppy Joe Mix

1 small onion,finely dice(about 1/2 cup) or 2 Tbsp.dried onion flakes
1 Tbsp.finely diced garlic,or 1 heaping tsp.garlic powder
1/4 tsp. celery seed
1 tsp. chili powder(can be omitted if you don't care for it)
2 Tbsp. brown sugar
1 heaping Tbsp. prepared mustard or 1/4 tsp. dry mustard
1/2 cup water
1 8 oz. can tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes or 1 C.catchup
Brown 1 lb.lean ground beef with onion and garlic,break the meat up in to small pieces.Add spices and cook until meat is done.Add the water,tomato sauce,tomatoes or catchup,whichever you choose to use,and the brown sugar and mustard.Mix well,cover and simmer for 10 minutes .Remove cover and cook until most of the liquid has cooked down.Serve on toasted hamburger buns,Hoagie buns or other sandwich bun or your choice.We like cheese on ours.
I had barbecue Sloppy Joes for supper tonight.Just browned a pound of meat,added salt,pepper,1 tsp.garlic powder,1 tbsp. dried onion flakes and used 1 cup prepared barbecue sauce instead of the tomato sauce.MMMMMM ........good!
You can triple the dry ingredients,except for the brown sugar and store it in a zip lock bag or air tight container to have on hand. 3 Tbsp. will season 1 lb. of meat for Sloppy Joes.

Sloppy Joes where I come from, no beans. Some recipes were called Barbecues. Homemade sloppy joes are one of my favorites!

Here's my recipe.

5 lbs ground beef (80% lean)
1 cup hot water
Cook this over low heat until the meat is crumbly then add:
1/2 cup ketchup
3 heaping teaspoons mustard
3 heaping teaspoons horseradish
3 level teaspoons Worcestershire Sauce
3 heaping teaspoons salt
1 cup finely chopped onion
1/4 teaspoons pepper
1 heaping teaspoon monosodium glut. (optional)
Cook over low heat, stirring often, for 15 min. until mixture boils. Increase heat slowly until mixture boils, and boil for 25 minutes.
Serve with slotted spoon
