Bathroom fan vents to the top of the attic, not outside

Hi:

I'm a first time poster to the Remodeling Forum and hoped you could comment on the above situation. Our town does not have any code about where the exhaust should go, simply that there should be a fan in each bathroom.

We have a ridgeline vent, and the flexible metal exhaust ducts are routed up toward the vent. We have no mold problems in the attic. (Although a bat did travel down the duct into our living space!)

We are having a new roof installed, so it's been recommended that we have them go to the outside. Is this the generally accepted practice?

Thanks,

Mary
