I bought a real fixer upper in Bothell (itÂs north of Seattle) not too long ago, and before I even got started on the upgrades I figured I better do my research to make sure I do it right. I tried the usual suspects, Home & Garden, do it yourself sites, etc. Then I realized I didnÂt have the time or the knowledge to do everything I wanted. I spend half my free time commuting in Seattle traffic. Anyway, I found this site, www.homeimprovementcorner.com, the articles are not too technical, just right for figuring out what you want to do. They also have this handy tool for finding contractors, just fill out a form and someone will call you. I guess they prescreen everyone, everyone has experience in their area, they verify the contractors have insurance and such. Really handy for me. So I ended up hiring the kitchen contractor that called me from Home Improvement Corner. TheyÂre doing a great job. I recommend you check it out. Anyone else heard of good sites like this?

Yeah. Unfortunately it usually happens when someone registers at a non-commercial Web site (like this one) to shill for a Web site they just "discovered." They register here and within a day -- or even less (as you did) -- they post all this wonderful information about the place. Turns out they usually have some financial interest in the site, too.

Maybe your experience is genuine. There's enough here to make us jaded types go "hmm...". If this is a legitimate post, though, here's a hint for the future: participate at a site and build some credibility before you make a recommendation like this -- and disclose whether you and yours profit from people becoming customers of the site or product you're recommending.

Actually, gardenias are tough, tough plants. I don't know why they have the reputation of being hard to grow, I guess because too many people have gotten a small, potted one and then proceeded to torture it by keeping it indoors in hot, dry, dark conditions, and then often overwatering and rotting the roots as it sat in a decorative pot cover -- the typical Valentine's Day/Easter/Mother's Day gift plant thing. They should bounce back with vigor. I would just pot up to a larger, appropriate sized pot, use a really good quality potting mix like ProMix that is peat and perlite based, and keep them watered. They like to get just barely dry between waterings. I assume you're going to keep them outdoors for the summer -- they will be ok in full sun to partial shade, as long as it's not cooking in extreme afternoon heat. I a few weeks as they recover, I would start feeding about every 10 days with a liquid fertilizer for acid-loving plants. Use some Osmocote, too, if they don't have some from the grower already. The two biggest issues you will encounter with gardenias is 1) that they turn chlorotic easily if the soil pH goes too high, that is a problem in areas with hard tap water, use acid plant fertilizers and trace elements to combat this and 2) they are bug magnets, aphids, scale, white fly, and mites love them. I spray a couple times a year with one of the newer class of insecticides/miticides such as Bayer 3 in 1 Insect/Disease/Mite spray. And I always put imadicloprid in the soil spring and fall. That keeps bugs away. The winter best in cool, dryish conditions. They are temperate zone plants and need a dormancy, but they can't tolerate deep freezing to any significant extent, most are zone 8 or zone 9, such as the really common variety 'August Beauty' which is probably what yours are. I winter mine at about 40-50 degrees, let them get quite a bit drier than in summer but don't let them wilt. When I bring them in in the fall, I generally will prune the top back about 50% just for size control, since they grow rapidly in the summer and my space for wintering is small, but that is completely optional.

The porch to the front door is too small. I'd enlarge it at least twice the size, so it's as wide as that portion of the house. Actually, larger than that because I'd take it clear over on the left to meet the garage wall. Cover the porch with a portico or gazebo-type roof. Move the yard lamp post to the left of where the vehicle is parked or get rid of it altogether. I'm a minimalist. I'd get rid of all the pots and things on the right side of the picture. Instead, I'd plant bigger things - flowering shrubs, maybe a small tree. How far does your property go to the right? The front seems cluttered and cramped. I'd plant the new things much further to the right to make the walkway to the porch seem wide open and welcoming. Do you have a back yard? I get the feeling you don't, which would explain why there are toys and lawn furniture in the front. Edited to add: for the porch roof, maybe it would be best to echo the shape of the garage roof rather than a flat gazebo-type.

And AS there are those like yourself, who think no one needs an architect. However,in this case, the OP said she/he planned on hiring one, so why the need for you and booty buns to continue on your needs to diss the idea of using a design professional? cpartist - I know you read my comments and AS's comments, because you responded to them directly. So you clearly know we NEVER "dissed the idea of using a design professional". In fact, we did the OPPOSITE of what you claim. We suggested the OP use a design professional to offer suggestions to the existing plans they already have. The only thing we did was push back on your contention that the OP must only use a design professional to create an entirely new custom plan from scratch, rather than providing advice/tweaks to the existing plans. So in the words of Mark Bischak, Architect..."that is a false and inflammatory statement".

Assuming you do not use the radiator? If not. I’d put curtains along the wall. Cover the window. The art is giving the illusion of more windows and I think it’s too serious for the space... what couch do you like? Show us some inspo? Can/would you go light? That egg shaped chair should go in a bedroom and then add some coffee tables, side tables, and fun accents. Vases. Pictures. Candles. Books.... 🥳

As long as the poster isn't gaining financially, i dont see any reason to not post websites that might benefit others on these forums. I personally would welcome them.

Sierraeast, I agree with you. But, since I have been the Senior Member Moderator on another woodworking website, I have found that 99% of those kinds of posts are spam----folks trying to get free advertising in all cases, and trying to tout a less than honest website/business in some cases. The presentations used to be on the order of---"Hey, guys! Just found a WONDERFUL place to get_________!!!!"

Now, the shills are getting much more creative. We recently found a fella who had been a member for several months starting that kind of nonsense.

So------many members of authentic sites like Garden Web and the forum of which I am a member have become quite experienced at noticing this kind of cheating.

Thanks handymac, i have seen some sordid attempts on the building a home forum, and like you they ran them off!I stand corrected, there is no room for that on these or any other forums.

I don't mind if people respond to direct questions about Web sites they've found which offer a specific product or excellent service or good prices, though full disclosure is important in those cases. But these breathless "you guys gotta go to this great site" that no one has asked about? No, thanks.
