Canoe quilt

This is a quilt I just finished, the pattern is called crossed-canoes. The fabrics for the blocks are a blueberry print, one with a cream background and the other with a black background.

This quilt pattern is on my list. I think yours is the prettiest I have seen - very good color and fabric choice. The contrast is perfect. I love it.

Geraldine - I just had that happen w/ the canoe quilt I just finished. I only had enough of the darker fabric to make 30 blocks (there was more of the lighter background) so as I was cutting my last strip of the darker fabric, I cut it 1/4" too short!!!!! I had to set it aside too. But I'm either determined or bull-headed - I decided I could make up the difference in my seaming so I went ahead and used the fabric pieces that were 1/4" too short. It helped that the pieces cut from the strip were triangles so I had the bias to help in the 'stretching' and I was careful to have some of the 'shortness' at the top and the bottom of each block as I pieced them together. It did make the construction harder than it had to be, but once everything was put together, no one else would probably know. It did mess up some of my points, but not in a glaring way. I hope there is a way to make it work with yours also, but I completely endorse a 'cooling-off' time! Karlene

Sorry to hear about that Sharon and Donna. Donna I had a relative that was bleeding internally and losing a significant amount of blood, and they determined he had gall-bladder poisoning, unfortunately they did not catch it in time though. I hope they can figure out what is causing your SIL to lose blood. I spent part of this afternoon trying to get a good layout plan for my son's MineCraft quilt. It's gonna' be a twin size and I have never made a quilt that size before. I am also slowly making some quilted Christmas ball ornaments for my Mom's Christmas present - I have finished 2 and would like to make her 4 more, though I have not decided yet if I want to do 3 pairs of 2 with each pair being a unique color combo or just do them all with the same fabric so they all match.? I am contemplating cutting some fabric and making 2.5" jelly roll strips, that way I could use them for making quilted ball Christmas ornaments and scrappy quilts and bindings. I am thinking about getting a yard and a half of flannel and making a small temporary design wall above and behind my sewing desk (we have paneling in my sewing room right now, but later on want to put dry wall up and paint. How much does flannel usually cost per yard and would it be cheaper to just wait till this fall and get a twin flat flannel sheet at dollar store or kmart? - would love some suggestion on this. We just got back from 2 weeks in Morocco and Spain and am trying to catch up. We did go into a couple fabrics shops in Madrid - lots of flamenco type fabrics - synthetics, etc. Not any cotton I could find. It was interesting to see, but nothing I wanted to buy. My 89 year old mother weeded our entire raspberry patch while we were gone - bless her heart! Today we sorted through some boxes of fabric I inherited from a friend and she picked out a stack of fabrics that might work for some quilt backings for her - some pieces are 5-6 yards each! Others are just plain ugly! Tomorrow we are having professional family portraits taken with 4 generations - both of the great grandmas, DH & I and our DS & DIL and our beautiful granddaughter, Charlotte. (Charlotte is a great name, Linda! :) ) The kids will come over for bbq after the portraits are done. We figured having both of our moms here (89 and 91 years old) we had better do it before they aren't here for good. Snapshots are okay, but this will be better. Our moms go back to Arizona Wednesday,then I can get back to sewing. Sue

No quilting this weekend. I packed up my little Janome Jem for the trip home to Minnesota. She's been living in Hawaii for a few years. My grandkids are coming to spend spring break with us here on Maui, and then we'll be heading home on April 2. We still haven't got a buyer for our condo, but I know these things take time. Grrrr. We're taking the kids on a whale watch and we're going to the great aquarium that they have on island. We'll also do some snorkeling, swimming and canoeing and visit the top of the dormant volcano, Haleakala. We found a great beach where the huge honu (sea turtles) come ashore to bask in the sun. They're traveling by themselves for the first time (they're 18 and 16), so it's sure to be an adventure. Enjoy the spring weather wherever you are.

Thank you all. I found the 2 blueberry fabrics at a thrift store so I went looking for a pattern to use 2 fabrics in. Even though the print is small, it looked too busy to have the blocks side-by-side so I put the sashing in, and then I got excited about it when I added the borders - I'm not sure why, but working with those colors just made me happy.

Like Donna, I have seen the pattern, but have not seen a whole quilt done with it. I liked the patern quite a bit before, but seeing your quilt makes me sure this is something that I'd like to do "someday." Nice job!
