Ok so I get more responses from this forum, which is why I post most of my messages here. I am in the final stages of trying to pull our sunroom together. Thanks to all of you who have replied to my counter stools post, can't you tell I'm very anxious to get this room done. I have 8 windows that look out to the yard. The room brings in alot of sunlight throughout the day so we want something that doesn't darken the room, but has privacy. I've solved the sliding glass door issue and plan to use white drapes with a silver rod. Thanks momof3 who gave me this great inexpensive idea. I have cellular shades in the other rooms of the house and was thinking to do the same, but came here to see other options. Anyone have a room similar to ours with alot of windows? What shades/coverings did you choose? Here's our room for those of you that don't know me by now : )

We have ceramic film (tint) on our sunny side windows to reduce heat and protect fabrics. It's expensive, but we love it.

fyi, the rims can be painted after installation. Charliedawg, our plugs are perfect. With the lakeview, fireplace, tv, open kitchen and arches to DR and foyer, there is really only one natural place for our sofa. I knew we wanted to put a sofa table behind it, so we left room for that and enough room to walk between table and the cedar posts at the kitchen opening. The electrician said there was no rush since the plugs were going into the main level, which is second story, so we were able to wait until house was framed to decide exactly where they were going. DH and I used empty boxes to place where the sofa and measured to make sure there was enough room behind for table. elizawhyza, you ask an important question about working with a contractor in putting in a largely recycled kitchen. Many people who artfully incorporate old things into their homes are seasoned DIY'ers, but I needed grown ups to get things in properly. My contractor is not a firm. He is a recovering economist who has an affinity for old houses and likes to see them respected. His own skills are excellent, and he puts together work crews for each job he undertakes, whether it's a bathroom or a whole house. I cannot imagine taking on this house with a different kind of contracting firm. Indeed, he looked at all the houses I was considering and outline what work would be entailed in for each of them. I have worked with him on several less extensive projects over the years, and I consider the trade-offs -- basically I had to start with a very rough ballpark estimate of what his work would cost and I was responsible for contracting with the electrical, HVAC, window, and floor people, but I knew that I would get careful work on the house -- more than reasonable. By the time we got to the kitchen, he and his crew has turned this into this which entailed jacking up the roof, replicating a lost corbel, and patching the original cypress clapboards with newly milled ones. In that context, shimming the kitchen cabinets vertically as well as laterally was not a big deal. On your other question, I bought the cabinets from my local craigslist, after checking out what was available almost daily for several months. I talked to the owner, drove out to look at the cabinets, paid him for them, and then hired three guys and a truck to pick them up and bring them into the city. The distance was about 15 miles and the moving cost a couple hundred dollars. There are also a couple of local non-profit house part recycling places that occasionally have nice cabinets, but that works best if you are in a position to check them daily, which I am not. The non-local sources for good used cabinets are ebay (which tends to have kitchen center displays that are listed for "local pick-up") and and Green Demolitions. The latter carries some very up-market used kitchen from the NYC area. They will email you all kinds of pictures to show the condition of what you might be buying, and they can help customers arrange shipping. I have never actually purchased from them, but I would certainly consider it. I look forward to seeing your cabinets. suzatwork: i have to say your floors have very much the same grain and variation in tone as my highly-coveted black walnut. they're stunning! i'm wondering how they take stain, since i'd like darker floors? my plan is to go with the walnut but i'll have to get some samples and check the amendoim out. i'll have to look it up, but also assuming this species would be harder than walnut... hmmm... GREAT! more for me to think about! thanks for posting your gorgeous floors.

I have woven woods and purchased them at Home Depot. In the stores there are several available widths/lengths to choose from. In two of my bedrooms the width is off about 3/4" on each side, but with my window panels, no one would ever know. I spent a lot less on the shades/draperies than I would have on one made-to-measure shade. ;o)

We have the kind of roller shades that you can see outside but you can't see in when it's daylight. They filter the light quite nicely. Only downside is that at night, you can't see out but others can see in. This wasn't a problem on the first floor but you can't use them in a bedroom/bathroom.

I forgot to mention, on our triple or double windows we used just one shade...looked and functioned much better this way. In other words, you would need three shades not 7.

boxerpups - you always have a great eye! I love what you found. I was thinking how would it look if I sectioned each of the windows off with one shade similiar to the first picture you posted? For example the three windows to the far left placing one shade there, another on the next three and then on the last two? Or do you think one on each window would be easier? When we pull up the shades we usually pull them all up at once. What are your thoughts?

Are you open to venetian blinds? When I had my sunroom installed it took me months to decide upon what type of window covering I was going to use. Although I had been looking at shades, I decided upon venetian blinds because even when they are completely down, you can see out when you turn the blinds. I have the cordless variety with small holes so that there is no issue with holes down the middle of the blind. The sides have a very small space. I have a lot of privacy with these blinds at night and I am very happy with them.

I'm not sure what yours look like. I don't think I've seen the cordless variety. Do you have a picture of them?

no, I don't however they are the Levelor Mark 1. I got them installed by Sears in Canada.

I'm still looking for a treatment for my patio door. Here is a recent site I found that may be useful. I was hoping to get a peek of your backsplash, but no such luck! I hope I haven't missed your final kitchen reveal.

I think your shades look a bit odd for the room because the vertical trims from the windows look out of place and stand out without relationship to anything else.
Another way to remedy the situation is to have drapes mounted over the shades so that there are other vertical lines that pull them together. Kind of like the last picture that boxerpups posted. (I am not sure though)

If you want to use separate shades for each window, the color of the shade has to fade with the wall color so you don't see the white trim. I think this is the biggest reason the shades as is don't fit in the room.

I you use larger shades mounted over multiple windows, this may make your room look squwat. You may want to play with some software and see how it looks.

The other thing you might want to look into are the shades that lift up or down. You can get some increased privacy and increased light.

We're not there yet, but are planning on thin cellular blinds so they disappear when closed and are a tone of the walls when down. Running second is a sun shade only.

Looking at your room, I think the window film plus a topper or simple cafe curtains on the bottoms with a large print complementing your wall tone. Not this exactly, but something like it.

We went with muslim - when they are down, you can still see the green from the yard.

doraville - Those are nice as well, but DH is not loving them. I prefer the cellular over them as they are less expensive too. As for the backsplash... we're at a halt. Unfortunately, my contractor "friend" needs some family time for his weekends, now that the major work is done. We decided to wait a few more weeks before we complete the backsplash. So NO you haven't missed the reveal, but I'll be posting as soon as all the shades and sliding door treatments are up.
