You have a tough one. I would hate to cover up those gorgeous windows. How about a sofa facing the windows
with a long ottoman right in front of the fireplace facing the tv. This way you can have seating there without blocking it. Then two comfy chairs in front of the windows. I say comfy like la-z-boy comfy without looking like one. Your DH will want something to sit on to watch that tv. If you don't want the seperate sofa and ottoman then get a sofa with an attached chaise.

Well -- I'd love to see a more clean-lined sofa (but still traditional to work with the style of the room) -- that would sit in front of the window (with a possible console table behind it to hold a couple of lamps) Exact placement would simply depend on sizes and shapes of the new sofa. A new sofa might have a slightly lower back that would allow the view to be seen.

Then a couple of swivel rocker armchairs could be placed opposite the new sofa -- and would allow viewing of both the TV and the fireplace. A round table OR one of the end tables could be used between the two new chairs. Lighting could be handled by a standing lamps or two ......

Gorgeous room. I'm green with envy over your wall of windows. If this were my room, I would put a sofa facing the windows, then two nice recliner/swivel chairs in front of the window facing the sofa. A long ottoman/bench in front of the fireplace (with roll arm pillows at either end for comfortable sitting or laying), and a square coffee table in the middle. Put a little table in between the two recliners with a lamp. Another small table to set down a drink on one end of the sofa and a floor lamp on the other end. Or a console behind the sofa.

This way you will have a nice conversation grouping, seating to watch the fireplace or the television or look out the window, from every angle in the room!

Thanks! I do enjoy those windows and feel very lucky to have found such a nice home. I looked at about 100 houses over a 2-month period! I'm also enjoying this seasonal climate, having spent a lot of time in the desert.

I finally found some online software and tried out your suggestions, but with an added chair for TV viewing. I don't think an ottoman or bench would be comfortable enough for that purpose...and unfortunately I can't fit the TV next to the fireplace. It seems a little crowded, but I wasn't sure of the sofa and chair sizes so I probably erred on the large size. I wonder if a sectional sofa might also work?

I wouldn't put another chair in front of the fireplace. You have the ones by the window to watch tv. If they swivel even better. A sectional is great but it would also cover the fireplace. I think you only have three options there, a sofa that has a chaise, a long ottoman (it's not for tv watching) or two chairs. Not full chairs, wooden chairs pretty ones that are open and wouldn't block the fireplace.
For the comfy recliner, there is another thread right now asking about recliners. Check that one out. I posted the link to the la-z-boy website. They have alot of recliners that don't look like the old type. They even have wing chairs that recline. You could also get club chairs.

OK I just had another idea. If you do get swivel chairs, as long as they are not monstrous, you could put them kinda angled in front of the fireplace. That way you can face the tv or the fireplace.

But personally I would probably go with the nice chairs.

bluemoon, using the first mock-up you have with the chairs in front of the window, delete the chair in front of the fireplace. Make that a long ottoman/bench. Change the small rectangular coffeee table to a large square table. Then it'll be great. The long ottoman can be made to be something that can be used for TV viewing by using roll arm pillows on either end. Keeps the ottoman/bench from blocking the view of the fireplace, but makes it a place to lay down to watch TV.

If you really don't want a bench there (which would look great, IMO, you could do a chaise. Here's a traditional looking chaise from EA (just to give an idea, not saying the style is right for you)

Also, think about a large square ottoman in the center instead of a coffee table -- either would work, but an ottoman would give everyone a place to plunk their tootsies. Personally, I prefer coffee tables, but we like to eat snacks in our TV room, and the coffee table also gives us a good spot to set up our trains. :)

After our entertainment unit was delivered, we moved the sofa to half a dozen different positions. I think it looks best against the window because it gives a more open feeling to the room, especially from the entry and dining room. You're right about the extra chair being too much...I now think that two chairs will be plenty; maybe swivel chairs plus one ottoman? If I use that oriental carpet, do you have any suggestions for fabric color/type? Should the chairs match? Should I replace the recliner sofa with a more formal sofa? Or replace the end tables with more casual tables? I'm ready to shop, but don't know what to get!
