Wow! I am excited when I see a hummingbird through the window.

Nice photo! The saucer type feeders are my favorites, I usually buy Droll Yankee's Happy 8 feeders. The new version of that one snaps together, too, but you don't have to take it apart to clean and refill it, if you don't want to.

Yes, it's exciting when they land on you. We've had that happen before, had them perch on our fingers while hanging up the refilled feeders. All of sudden, they're eating like crazy around here, I had to hang a 4th feeder up on the front just yesterday. I've seen them stand on each other and double-dip, too.

I tried to take care of sick hummer once, I had him drinking nectar out of the little well created by my fingernail, his little tongue was very tickly, but the poor thing didn't make it. I think the problem was his partly that his eyes had gone bad, I don't know if that was a symptom or the whole issue, but he died about 20 minutes later. It was very sad. And I've picked up a few dead ones that must have collided with something, their necks seemed to be broken. That gave me a great opportunity to examine them up close, those tiny feathers are amazing, they have the littlest of everything!

We always laugh when we are at my brother's cabin. They drink from the feeders and peer into the windows at us while we eat breakfast LOL. If the feeders run dry, they will come and hover at eye level at the sliding door and stare inside looking pretty huffy.

Dances.

They do get pushy, don't they? And FIESTY!!! We have some of the selfish 'it's all mine' variety that will sit and guard the feeders! One will come up and try to eat and another will dive-bomb him!

We haven't seen the numbers this year, that we did last, but are hoping they will pick up after the babies are out and about. As it is, though, we still have 5 feeders at the camp (only one at home) but we just don't fill them quite so full.

I wish they would use the feeders I have put up. They prefer the flowers in my yard and of course, I am never where I can sit and watch them - bummer!

I have them during migration and during the winter here in Central Florida. Friends who live nearby still have some so those must be residents birds.

This is one that was caught and banded in my yard this past Feb. Note the pink paint that is put on the bird so that it won't be caught again that day if it goes in the cage. Paint will not hurt the bird and will be lost when the bird molts in the spring. This was an immature male Ruby.

This is my female Rufous that has returned to my yard the past three winters. She was caught and banded when an immature female. You can see the band. It is always put on the right leg. If you ever find one that has been banded, you should report it to a bander in your area so that it can be captured again. They are trying to track migration paths, weigh and examine birds to see how healthy they are and date their age.

This is an immature male Rufous that came to my yard for the winter in 2010. He didn't return this winter to stay but I did have a mature male visit during migration. It could have been him but mine was not banded.

My hummingbirds are back & eating like there is no tomorrow. I now have to fill the feeders 2 times a day. There are 4 feeders & two of them are 32 ozs. & the other 2 are 16 ozs. Last year at the peak time I went through 50 lbs of sugar in one month. Right now one of my mother cats stopped feeding her kittens & one died. I now have 3-3 week old babies on our porch that I am trying to bottle feed. Wish me luck

I use a bright red hair clip to hold my book open when I go outside to read so I'm not constantly fighting the breeze. One day I was enjoying a book and a little hummer came and sat right on top of the clip. Oh my, I was so excited but didn't even dare breathe for fear I'd scare him away. He stayed about 30 sec and off again he went.

Are the bottom 2 pic a Rufous or an Allen's?

thanks for sharing that. I had a downy woodpecker knocking on my window 2 ft from my chair the other day because the suction cup window feeder was in the house. I have head of that, but it was hard to believe until it happened to me.

I don't have a lot of hummingbirds this year for some reason. Years past I have had as many as 50 in one season. I have 3 feeders right now and leave the bee guards off. I have several sets of Orioles, a few woodpeckers and some finches all drinking from them as well as maybe a dozen hummers.
