French Door Hardware

We purchased a Jeld Wen French door several months ago and were putting off the installation until after we did foundation work. Ultimately, I was talked out of that endeavor (see my gw query on the old house forum).

Our door guy is ready to install them tomorrow, but I just realized I have no hardware for them! I love the oil rubbed bronze Emtek hardware we got for our front doors, but I'm having a heck of a time figuring out how to get something similar for these. I'm very confused by all the variations on multipoint entry sets, dummy sets, etc. A lot of online shops offer handlesets for Anderson, Eagle, and other brands...But I can't find any that specify that they work on Jeld Wen doors.

I think I can do more footwork tomorrow (call some local stores, for one), but on the off chance this would be an easy question for one of you seasoned pros: What kind of handlesets do I need?

Should have been an option with the door. Jeldwen is not the best quality ad other than a Jeldwen dealer I really do not know who to suggest as the guts could be a Jeldwen exclusive. Is it multipoint locks?

You need a three-point lock for a french door. It may be important to note if they are outswing, and it is also important which side is the active leaf.

When you buy a door from a certain manufacturer, you can only use their hardware. So pick a company whose hardware you like. Ron

Sounds like it was installed incorrectly. Some locks require you to have the latch mechanism in a certain position/orientation when you install. If you don't, things do not engage properly. Remove the lock and follow the instructions exactly when you reinstall it. Ron

Decent quality sliding - or folding sliding doors - will do the job and last more than 15 years. Of course you have to fit them properly for a good seal so choose an experienced fitter, a specialist fitter or buy a door that can be fitted by the manufacturer. As with anything, you get what you pay for. Untreated softwoods are likley to warp over time so treated woods, hardwoods or metal doors will perform well over a longer period.

Apparently Jeld Wen is very proprietary about their door accessories, so it's not easy to get information, pricing, or (gasp) order them yourself. And yes, I've heard they're not the best quality either. Hindsight 20/20...

I ended up calling the dealer that sold them originally and she's getting me two multipoint handlesets. Luckily, we're able to use Emtek hardware instead of the Jeld Wen. Emtek is not only cheaper, but has a ton more options.

The outswing is a bit of a bummer because I wanted screens. I'm assuming this will be another item I'll have to buy through a dealer...And that they won't work great. Bleh!

If this is an outswing door unit you will need an interior screen and that would most likely need to be a retractable type screen and Jeldwen last I knew sold no such thing. Do an internet search on "retractable screens" and purchase a good one as a cheap one in a product like this will be complete crap.

millworkman, I wish you weren't so right. It seems that the retractable screen brands recommended most on GardwnWeb, like Phantom screen, cost a pretty penny.

Oh well, too hot for screens this year anyway. Time to save up!
